Just went to a thrift shop found a 10 in plate sterling marked $2.00 but since it was in the clearance bin I got it for a buck. 251.938 g. So I did not feel so bad paying $3.00 for a weighted sterling sugar bowl. 110 grams which I hoping will yield 20 to 30 g, very small weighted area.

Refining would be an unnecessary expense. I fail to understand why some people think you have to destroy an object to realize the intrinsic worth of its metal content. Silver and copper coins for example. Perfectly tradable in their current form, being recognizable and with a known composition. Refine them and you're paying money for that process, plus making a metallurgical assay necessary in order to liquidate the metal when the time comes to sell. Two steps detracting from your "profit". And being unnecessarily destructive in the process.

you should make sure it's not plated. because I came across a lot of silverware and it has "Sterling" on it. I did my research and found out the actually 100% all silver silware is hard to come across. but that everyone confusses Sterling plated with actual Sterling. because of the markings. my guess is that what u have, I wouldn't doubt that most of those pieces are only plated. but who knows. good luck tho.

Sterling is .925 pure silver all the way through. Silver plate is pure silver, deposited in a very thin layer by an electrochemical process. It's illegal for manufacturers to label plated products as Sterling.

You are right in saying that most "silverware" you will come across will be silver plated, but they will not be marked "925" or "sterling" if it is only plated. You are more likely to see something along the lines of "epns" marked on it, which means it's electroplated with silver. But if you find a piece with sterling marked on it, especially with the lion stamp, it's silver. Not plated.
