This year Mixmag teamed up with Smirnoff Sound Collective to curate a special line-up of DJ talent as we took The Lab to The Smirnoff House at SMS, Germany.
Complete with open plan living room, kitchen bar and bedroom and The Smirnoff House is probably the closest many will get to seeing huge artists up close and personal with an intimate house party vibe. Oh, and it's also quipped with a beast of a VOID sound system.
One of our guests was Steve Aoki. Let's be frank, while he's loved by people around the world for his big shows and cake throwing, he's generally snubbed by most underground dance music fans for those very same antics.
But Aoki used this special Lab set to answer the haters by laying down a competent set of underground house and tech rhythms. The mix essentially retains Aoki's core US sound but repackages it into an hour of bumping 4/4 that sits comfortably alongside chuggy house cuts such as Green Velvet's 'Bigger Than Prince'.

I have been there and was surprised by this set. He really killed it in that tiny location. I know he isn't liked for his EDM-cake-shows, but this was impressive. It was also the best Audio System I have ever heard in a "club". That crisp sound of VOID. Wow! Thanks Smirnoff, thanks Mixmag!

So many haters here... Dude is doing what he loves to do, and he's making a killing doing it. Regardless of what you think of his sound, you should acknowledge the guy is a super successful person when it comes to life. Props to him and anyone for that matter, that can make a living doing what they love. If you think he is a no-talent sell out. Then ask yourself why no other people willing to sell out have simply come along, sold out and replaced him. He would not be successful if any no-talent DJ could come along and just sell out and be that popular.

Props no doubt for doing something that he loves which is what many dream of, but but lets be honest, Aoki, his music and DJ sets don't stand for anything. I have a feeling that in the coming years many who liked this set and other 'amazing' Aoki sets will realise it's a pile of $hite. I just hope Aoki makes enough bank that when the EDM bubble bursts he is all set because without the mass hysteria and bandwagon he has/is nothing.

To all the haters: the set ain't THAT bad, to be honest, I expected a lot more cheese. It's nothing memorable or special but it's good promotion for Mixmag and an opportunity for the simple minded EDM kids to actually learn a thing or two about real electronic music by exploring the channel :)

I've read most of the comments below and some of them were saying that they're DJ's or music producers. I ask them; How are you going to make or mix good songs when you don't know how to listen? How can you expect to enjoy music when you can't hear the jazz in metal, the funk in punk, the orchestra in noise? How can you expect to have J-Dillas or Louis Armstrongs in the future when you don't give a single chance right now?
