Steve Backley's 91.46m javelin throw world record

Steve Backley's second world record, 91.46m, set in Auckland in January, 1992. This record stood until the following year when it was bettered by Zelezny.

I met Steve when I was 14. He taught us games for 1 lesson when he visited our school. Got my photo with him. Long time ago!

His big man counterpart these days would be Andreas Hofmann, he just threw 91.44 yesterday. They both have a smooth linear style. Once Hofmann get's a little more speed on the runway he will be over 94 meters easily. Briefly met Steve in passing when talking to Terry Mchugh (Irish javelin thrower) many years ago. The difference between the javelin throwers of today (Julius Yego et al) seems to be the use of less technique and more brute strength these days. Most of the guys today have an exceptionally slow throwing arm compared to people like Steve.
