After browsing KZbin for hours, I'm yet to watch a colab/jam video where Steve Bailey sounds good...

Song is "Well You Needn't" by Thelonious Monk if anybody wants to know
@dylanswint17959 жыл бұрын
cmon people listen to this, it's amazing. Both players are on top of their efforts, needless to say the heavy criticism of Steve Bailey is coming from those who are listening for mistakes rather than for the music.
@1BassJohn8 жыл бұрын
+Cyborg Rabbit Not necessarily true. I'm a big fan of Steve's..you don't need to be listening hard for mistakes to hear that the notes are just not in tune. Plain and simple. More a quirk of the fretless I guess. This is not the first video that is like this either. Beautiful player though, don't get me wrong, he is a brilliant musician. Fretless is a massive challenge, let alone with the chords Steve does ;)

That some posting comments hear a fake contest between Steve and Hadrien cracks me up. I just hear three guys jamming, having fun, and sounding great. I guess I am lucky that I get to play with guys who are about the music and not some sort of competition thing.

Usually I don't listen to that kind of stuff but I must admit this video is great, period. Great musicians with technique, and soul, everything is here. A lot to practice, for us ...

Ohh Hadrien, freaking great solos!

I like how all the people going on about how Hadrien is so much better than Steve forget that Hadrien is having fun here with a bassist who I am sure he has plenty of respect for.

Hadrien's style on this is incredible - fantastic tones, from the percussive muted style to the jazz guitar styled chords. Very impressive, far more so than the fret-wankery of the gospel chops dvd

Jaco made a generation of bassplayers want to pick up the fretless because he played great musical and challenging stuff and was always in tune. Steve Bailey...not so much
@honkmonky19899 жыл бұрын
+gimmeagig He's playing a 6strings bass, not Jaco, idiot!!! What Steve is doing is technically harder than what was doing Jaco, on certain aspects of the bass of course. Watch his video with Victor Wooten, bass extreme, you're gonna understand!
@Buzzbass9 жыл бұрын
+Lucien Henry really?? Jaco was a pionner on bass and you think steve stuff is better omg!! not the same definition of talent!!Bailey sound awful and untune and so in many video !!
@honkmonky19899 жыл бұрын
davebuzz79 i dont say its better, but he tries to play hardcore stuff, and sometimes it doesnt sound good because of the difficulties to play it. I'm not sure you are aware of the technic and skills needed to play a 6strings fretless bass.... And of course Jaco is the greatest, there is no doubt about it!!

If you want perfect intonation, play a fretted. Fretless instruments are for fluid intonation, not restricted to 12-ET.

@larsjohansson364010 жыл бұрын
Don't play fretless unless you have perfect intonation.
@dylanswint17959 жыл бұрын
+Lars Johansson yeah but how to achieve "perfect intonation" without playing on a fretless bass? Can't be afraid to take risks in life.
@larsjohansson36409 жыл бұрын
Cyborg Rabbit You start with playing fretted.
@dylanswint17959 жыл бұрын
Lars Johansson idk man, that comes from the whole dogmatic approach to music which I find so creatively stifling. He sounds fine in 90% of his performances.
@larsjohansson36409 жыл бұрын
So the other 10 %? Tell that to an upright player. If you like it: keep on listening.
@dylanswint17959 жыл бұрын
People are too uptight. Play what you want to, how you want to. This wasn't one of his better performances, but a lot of the microtones were intentional.

Comments about Steve Bailey being bad are absolutely cringe worthy! What cloud are these people living on, having the nerve to put down one of the greatest bass player on Earth? Do you understand that there is no level above Steve Bailey?
@tryfinally12 жыл бұрын
Steve's playing is outstanding, you clearly either have no idea what you're talking about or you own a fretless and broke a few fingers trying to best him.
@jasononbass12413 жыл бұрын
is it just me or is steve off a little in the beginning
@maximeb19011 жыл бұрын
Well said sir, I really feel the same. Ok, he is good, he knows what he's doing and everything and on a 6 string fretless bass that deserves respect, but musically speaking...pretty damn weak.

its not really showing off... they're just jamming and having fun... and in regard to the drum machine that's what he uses as opposed to a drum set... but other than that if you can find room for a kit on that stage then by all means
@STONEAJE11 жыл бұрын
It's because the lines don't really do anything for you. You don't need them at all for reference since the dots are still on the side. Also, his intonation is amazing. You and your friend there must not have working ears.
@JahzOnBass11 жыл бұрын
how is it lame? :/
@Bassswell12 жыл бұрын
I agree, you aren't going to accomplish much by proving that you are a better bass player than Steve Bailey. Some little school called "Berklee College of Music" just named Steve as the Chair of the Bass Department. Maybe you should send them your resume?
@FrostHoar12 жыл бұрын
Fretless are never in tune, you have to find it.
@fearcross12 жыл бұрын
Steve's style is very different. He uses a lot of chromatic melodies, and penatonic-like scales for his music. He mixes minor and majors, and all doing this on a fretless. It's not his intonation, it's his style. I'm a huge Steve Bailey fan. He's a great bassist, and his style is great.

OMG Bailey! Intonation 3/10 Musicality 1/10 Tone 2/10 (On a Warwick!) He is just playing notes randomly... carelessly...
@willyg791911 жыл бұрын
i keep watching this for hadrien. All who defend bailey here are missing some critical points. You can scoarch a fretless with great tone and intonation...jaco, gary willis, alain caron, pino palladino, mick karn..need i keep going?. bailey has no cool feel to any of his runs. chromatics are not the key to cool, and neither is some half ass arpeggiating...what are those notes anyways????? little half steps on the return up to variate a repeated run dont constitute"tasty lines". Bailey stinks!!
@ATTILAMORGEN11 жыл бұрын
This video demonstrates that Bailey is far behind Feraud ... no creativity and the feeling of a bulldozer in a field of wheat in summer..
