Steve, here some context on why many Maple Leaf fans are still angry despite the hard fought series. The last time the Maple Leafs won a playoff series was against the Ottawa Senators in the 1st round during the 2003-2004 season. Since that time, every Canadian team with the exception of 2 have not only won several playoff series, but made it to the Stanley Cup finals. Calgary Flames - 2004 Edmonton Oilers - 2006 Ottawa Senators - 2007 Vancouver Canucks - 2011 Montreal Canadians - 2021 The only 2 who haven't are the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Winnipeg Jets(who didn't exist until 2011, but made it to the Western Conference Final in 2018).

As a Caps fan, the Leafs have made me feel so much better about myself every spring since 2018. At least with my Caps, we usually got out of round 1, every year before our cup. Is Toronto really going to celebrate a round 1 series victory like they won a Stanley Cup? With that much money invested in just 4 players, I wouldn’t even celebrate a round 1 victory for more than 24 hours. i watched the leafs vs lightning series and that move is one that Tampa seems to like using, they only got called on it once or twice in game 2 or 3 but it didn't really stop them using it. I have a theory that the reason Tampa does so well in the post season is because if you look at their regular season stats they've been in the top 5 of most penalised teams in the NHL in the past few seasons. Because refs more readily put away their whistles during the playoffs this benefits teams that are more likely play in a way that gets them frequently penalised and negatively effects teams that play a cleaner game.

I think his point was valid though. Games 1 through 5 they called everything. Game 6 they called practically nothing, then did a 5-3 in the 3rd against the leafs. You didn't see them rushing to put the lightning down 5-3 when that trip on Nylander happened on the pp tonight. This game 7 the calls are just inconsistent. They call the interference and shortly after on that pk, a TB player punches Gio in the face and they call nothing. You can't have it both ways. I get the fan bias to their team. It really has nothing to do with that though. This has more to do with consistency. The refs didn't lose this series for the leafs, but they definitely didn't hurt the TB chances at winning it.

The most valid point he had in the video is that this is the best officiating the NHL has, its consistently inconsistent. To complain about it in this one game is both shortsighted and misses the greater point that for the league to continue to be considered a major sport officiating in the NHL needs to be addressed.

@@balfizan I did watch the replay. Gio shoved him in the chest. If you came to me and said Gio embellished and tried to sell a call on the "punch to the face", i'd take that answer better. And my rebuttal would be Foote did the same thing in Game 6 with the high stick, got a PP out of it that eventually turned into a 5-3 and allowed TB back in the game, back in the series even. The ref's wouldn't dare do that in game 7 on that Nylander trip, right? Look I'll say this all day: TB won that series, those games and the leaf's lost them - not the refs. But games 1-5 had reffing 1 way. Game 6 periods 1 & 2 had another. Game 6 period 3 and 1OT had another to that. And game 7 was let it go until it wasn't. And it was not a both ways sort of thing, sorry. This series saw the leafs take 134 penalty minutes to TB's 113. It was leafs 36 minors to TB's 31. In the regular season the leafs finished 18th with 702 total penalty minutes. TB finished 2nd with 901 (#1 was Nashville at 1035). TB had 304 minors over the season, TOR had 260. You tell me how this series was ref'd and who it benefited.

@@whoopass2rb my point was that when guys push and shove around the net in the regular season or post season I see plays like the one in front of the net not get called all the time. And I already said that officiating across the NHL is consistently inconsistent. It is and its not just that different officials call it differently, the same officials will call it differently from one night to another. And I will admit thats an issue I see it go both ways all the time. My question to you is this. Do you think the refs did this on purpose? And if so Why? The Leafs have a considerably larger fanbase and get better ratings than the Lightning, even after all the success the Leafs fanbase is 3-5 times larger than the Tampa fan base. If it wasn't on purpose would you want different officials? Because these are one of the two most experienced officiating crews in the league/playoffs. I've watched all seven of these games twice once on my own and once played back with steve on youtube and I will tell you all of the things youre seeing there are roughly an even number of things the other way that I could complain about or that I saw Steve/Leaf fans complain about that IMO don't warrant a complaint. I admit NHL officiating is inconsistent, it is, anything based on peoples split second judgement will always be to some extent. That said I know it could use some work do I think it decided this series? No I do not.

Which the Leafs did better this year than in years past. They did bend and break. We had em in game 6 and let them off the ropes. This was a weird series, but I think when Tampa got on the ropes, they started blocking shots and looked confident. It's how they do it. Winning close games

This Leafs teams remind me so much of those Caps teams that had so much skill and dominated the regular season but kept running face first into the playoff brick wall.. They kept pushing with the same core of players and finally broke through and won the Cup. Keep running it back Leafs you will get there..

The lightning were in a similar place and also broke through with their "skill" core. It's all about getting in the gritty 3rd and 4th liners and shoring up your defense pairings. The leafs can do it too despite the cap issues, just need 1 or 2 tweaks?

As an Islanders fan, I feel you. You could say the Lightning aren't my (flashbacks to Game 7 of the Semi Finals when I faceplanted on the parking lot asphalt during the viewing party outside of the Marriot just across from the Coliseum because I was so absolutely crushed by the defeat because we would have most likely won the Stanley Cup vs the Canadiens because let's face it the Metro was stacked that year and we were like RIGHT THERE and it was almost the same feeling as losing in the finals only worse because we lost buy only 1 goal and it was the only shorthanded goal we gave up all season and now questions were arising about contracts and the expansion draft in the offseason and were we going to be as good as we were this year next year DEEP BREATH) favorite team... I don't like them very much at all.

Yeah it’s fun to boo him at the games because of what he did, but some people take this thing way too seriously. He made a bad judgement call. Guess what? I have no problem with him. If he hadn’t left we may have never explored the talent we had and may have never even made it as far as we did. Even if we did there is no telling how he would’ve worked in Trotz’s system and furthermore the cap struggles we would have run into would’ve been tremendous, it most likely would have resulted in Anders Lee having to leave along with a few others. After all the pain Tampa has caused this team over the years I can’t believe any Islanders fan would root for them (unless of course it was against the Rangers).

I am a Tampa Bay Lightning fan, however, I believe I can empathize with Leafs fans. In the not so distant past, Tampa was seen as the team who could never drive it home- they were choke artists in the playoffs. Well look at us now. I dont say that to gloat, rather to say that the Leafs time will come. I know that Tampa's reign wont last forever and I hope that we can complete the 3 peat to finish out our time in the sun. Just remember that every giant falls eventually and soon enough I could see myself rooting for a Lightning team that is once again seen as choke artists while we play underdogs to the terrifying Leafs from Toronto. I've been saying for months that I don't think Leafs would make it past round one. And it was never an insult to anyone. It's just the reality of their division. Unless they got first or WC they would've met either Tampa or Florida. And even then I said that there is no shame in loosing if you play well. Leafs may very well be top 3 or 4 team in the league right now. But in the end when you have 2 other top 3-4 teams in your division, it's a coin toss of making it through. This is not like last year, this time their money guys played well, but honestly I do think it does come down to how the team is built. You need depth to get far in the playoffs and when half of your salary cap is going to 4 guys, it's not easy to get depth. Just look at Tampa, their depth pretty much was the deciding factor. Vasy played well at times, but he was sub .900 on losses as well, but he got it together when it mattered..

As defined by USA Hockey, rule 625 states, “Interference is defined as when a player uses his body (“pick” or “block”) to impede the progress of an opponent (non-puck carrier) with no effort to play the puck, maintain normal foot speed or maintain an established skating lane.” Unfortunately, Holl did just that, he collided/pushed Cirelli, taking him out of the play (if Cirelli didn’t get interfered, he could’ve continued to pursuit Tavaraes but Holl stopped him from being able to do that by breaking the rules). By rule, that’s interference, the rule was broken, it was the right call, the referee had his hand up before Tavares even scored, the announcers agreed, and the Leafs lost. Win or loss, the Leafs have flaws in their team, notably depth; you will never win the Cup when you rely on a single line to do everything. Talent needs to be more evenly distributed, there needs to be a better leader, they need more enforcement (if they can get two or three grinders, it will help the team a lot), a more compact defense, and they need to find a way to execute (in the playoffs, yhe defense tightens, and good chances and few. When you do get good chances, you need to execute, and the Leafs need to do a better job executing). Nevertheless, the Leafs played their hearts out, they have NOTHING to be ashamed of, and if they can just fix one of those flaws, they can definitely get a little deeper in the playoffs.

I'm 60,Steve,and have had a LIFETIME of pain cheering for the Leafs,a team I've been cheering for since 1970,when I was but eight years old. It never gets better. If you haven't read the book '67 by Damien Cox and Gord Stellick,you should. It tells the tale of the Leafs perfectly.
