A little different circumstance. Julian was a defensive minded coach. Bruins needed a more speedy offensive minded coach because thats the way the NHL was heading. Babs is a great coach, just look at his resume. I think the leaf players got paid and now they try to shine individually. They need to work more as a team instead of by themselves.

lmao.. bruins actually had a team that could win a playoff series since 2004 tho. babcock is bad but leafs are almost uncoachable
@Boston2az1995 жыл бұрын
@@ry4nx not really. They sucked from like 2004 till 2008-2009. They might've made it to the playoffs but weren't going to beat the Pens or Chicago. Really the turning point was when the loss to Philly after being up 3-0. The following yr they came back and won it. Julian was a great coach for the time but after losing Savard their power play SUCKED. When Horton went down the team united and gave them the push they needed to beat Vancouver. But the NHL was changing. Its all about speed and bringing in young fast players with top end talent. Look how the Canadians have done w Julian. Cassidy knew the propects and how to coach them, one reason why they're still doing good. The NHL has evolved since the 2000's. With the rule changes it's better to be a fast team with a solid blue line. And the leafs have no blue line..lol

@Lilbailnick5 жыл бұрын
I’m sick of the endless, the Blues in last January 1st. Yes, I’d agree them getting to the playoffs were impressive. How significant was them being in last place? Did you know they had as many as 6 games in hand on teams from the West on said Jan 1st? Well the Blues were (1) measly point behind LA... with 4 games in hand. (2) points behind Chicago with 5 games in hand. Yep the Blues were in last place on Jan-1st! Very true. The Blues also had played the fewest games in the league at that point. The achievement worth noting is that they won 30 of their last 45 games. This wasn’t a buried team in last place, it was a team in last place because of games played. But the only thing that really mattered in the end is the city of Boston suffered defeat live and in person.
@Zazzaro7035 жыл бұрын
Lilbailnick this is sort of the same as my Nats as well. All we heard during the playoffs was that we were 19-31 at one point and came back to make the wild card. Well a pretty huge reason the Nats were 19-31 is because half of that batting lineup people saw in the World Series was out of the lineup during that 19-31 start. It’s definitely impressive the Nats came all the way back, but this was a team before the season that other than losing Bryce was great on paper and added Corbin with that Harper money so they basically played to expectations after getting healthy.

Tyler Ennis got bought out and the reason he's still playing is he did well with the leafs. There's also been a few good players that Babcock wouldn't play, got traded for a bag of pucks and are doing amazing. Not saying he's 100% correct but he's not completely wrong either.
@jimsquire99495 жыл бұрын
@@joer8854 Agreed that Babcock may have enticed him and not played him, although there are legitimate reasons someone might do that, including the player not being able to play at the level they thought, or the player not putting in the effort. Regardless, as you've said, there are other players who Babcock wouldn't play who left or got traded and are doing well with other teams ( although not Ennis, Babcock did play him), but that's exactly my point. Other teams were willing to pick up those players, so their career continued. If nobody was willing to pick up Commodore from waivers (which means they get them for less than a bag of pucks), then nobody else thought he could play, so it wasn't Babcock who ended his career, it was Commodore himself, or his natural loss of ability with age.

I feel they’ve been thinking about it since the mid-way point of last season. 1. When Boston cooled off they had their chances to win some games, catch up, and take second place in the division to get home ice. But instead they sort of just staggered their way through to the post-season. 2. The Special teams are abysmal, particularly the Powerplay. There’s no reason a team with this kind of talent struggles to convert on the man-advantage. It should be one of their lethal strengths - don’t take penalties or they’ll make you pay. 3. Very odd choices of player deployment in the playoffs, especially in Game 7; add on two back-to-back horrible Game 7 performances. 4. I think they would’ve likely fired him before the season started but wanted to give him another chance this season with the newly built Dubas-vision team. But they’re on track to be struggling to be a Wild Card. The Leafs are all-in this season and have wasted two 1st round picks; they can’t throw this season away. Better now before they get too far off track. Even Ottawa has a better record :/

When Dubas took over there was a noticeable downward turn too. Lou cleaned house and gave Dubas a blank slate and he really under delivered on the major contracts starting with Nylander. Even if there was dissension between Babs and Dubas, wouldn’t the blame then lay with Shanahan? After all, cultural alignment starts at the top and if that alignment in philosophy wasn’t there now then those talks were not detailed and deep enough to begin with all those years ago.

The 2009 Penguins fired their coach and went on to win the Cup. They did it in February, 5 points out of the playoffs, so it's not exactly the same sort of situation as with the Blues, but quite similar. Sometimes a team has all the right pieces, but is struggling due to the systems they're employing. And I honestly think Toronto does have all the right pieces, pieces that CLEARLY can work together towards a successful season (as a Habs fan, it physically hurts me to say this, but it's true despite how I might feel about it). Now I am glad that they're going to be in cap hell for years to come, which may mean that they can't KEEP all of those pieces (and certainly may have trouble acquiring new ones), but that's a "summer 2020 problem" for the Leafs.* But I will say that good players are attracted to teams with a solid core of talented players, so they might have less trouble than most teams filling those roster spots with decent talent. Incidentally, I've always advocated for tax parity in the NHL (to ensure that a player who takes home 3 million USD in post-tax salary in Florida would make the same 3 million USD post-tax in Toronto or Montreal...places like Vegas, Florida and Texas can see a team paying cap hits of hundreds of thousands less per player than Canadian and California teams, for the same post-tax income in the player's bank account, *_clearly a subversion of the spirit of a hard cap_* ), but right now, Ontario's high taxes are basically players' ONLY reason to not sign in Toronto for less money than they're worth...so maybe it's working in my favour right now! Of course, if things keep going the way they are, the only reason players will have to not sign with the Habs (whose core is looking pretty impressive these days both in terms of right now, AND the future - Domi, Drouin, Gallagher, Kotkaniemi, Suzuki, Poehling, Mete, Fleury and Caufield...plus Price and his heir apparent, Cayden Primeau, Petry and Weber who are both getting a bit long in the tooth, and Romanov and Norlinder over in the KHL and Sweden respectively) will also be the high taxes...so I'd rather the next CBA work this issue out since it's not fair to the players, teams in high-tax areas, and fans. *Somehow, they're going to have to add 11 players (either by bringing them up to the NHL from other leagues, trading for them, or signing/re-signing them as UFAs and RFAs) to their roster next season for $17 million (including basically an entire defense corps, since Reilly is the only D-man on-roster beyond this year)...and it'll be hella fun to watch them try!
@mattdoesstuff89875 жыл бұрын
Since many of the Leafs players played under Keefe in the AHL, he already has a connection with them. That was what happened when Bruce Cassidy was hired by Boston. The Bruins had a bunch of young guys who had played for him in the minors and that connection was already there. So that will be good for the Leafs.

I feel like Babcock never really readjusted.I think is more of a case of not what went wrong with the Leafs so much as what went right for the other teams. Anyhow hopefully Keefe is more well rounded and is able to adjust on the fly.

I hope Sheldon Keefe creates a super line right away. Matthews /Tavares /Hyman and add Marner when he returns. It will be interesting to see if Keefe likes the idea of Nylander as a centerman. If so then Nylander could center Johnsson and Kapanen. We should know tonight. I am sure we will see Leafs defensemen pitch in more in the offensive zone. Watch Reilly and Barrie excel. What I am hearing from Dubas and Keefe it's attack attack attack mode whereas Babcock always wanted to collapse always being on the defensive which did not work because it suffocates the offence. Does this mean the Leafs will be all about the fore check which Babcock hated. Not once did we ever hear the words fore check come from the lips of Babcock.

Let's put this into perspective. Any hockey man or woman worthy of consideration as an NFL coach knows the game and KNOWS COACHING. As bad as Babcock's record was, no coach at the tier 2 junior level could do as well as him and these guys are very good coaches. As the coaches move up the ranks, it's not the x's and it's on the blackboard that makes the better coach, it how well he deals with the personalities. People skills, he got that - he proved it with his success. Maybe the group of guys simply weren't a good fit. It was the right thing to fire him. It was time to move on but he is still a great coach.

We still have Dubas, so one down, one to go. Hopefully sooner rather than later so he can't do anymore damage to the team.
@JohnSmith-ip4js5 жыл бұрын
The plateau you referred to was when Dubas took over. Not sure that was a coincidence given the personnel changes he implemented and there were many. Plus Shanny hiring a GM with such a different philosophy to the game than Lou and Mike....and Mike took the job based on his own philosophy which until Dubas showed up was congruent with the organizations'.

As a Sens fan, thank you for DJ Smith! I've not seen a Sens team work this hard night in and night out since... 2012. Loving him so far! Also, thanks for Connor Brown! How's Cody Ceci doing?

Lol, I miss brown too! I honestly never liked Ceci, even when he played in Ottawa..honestly would rather Zaitsev or Hainsy instead

I miss Hainsey and Brown. I dunno if I miss Zaitsev yet... I'm still kinda hoping that Ceci can find another gear.

I’m a hurricanes fan but I wonder if as a team they stop buying into what the coach was selling and they gave up on the process. Also do you think it’s possible The leaf GM could be on the hot seat as well?

There are at least half a dozen guys with NHL experience and NHL success who are available. Darryl Sutter, Dave Quinn and Dan Bylsma to name a few. Leafs are expecting the new guy to make a playoff run with this team. Despite having no NHL experience. They are asking nearly the impossible

Leafs need a coach that knows the way of the game now and not in the past when players like neidermayer played. Hockey game has changed and is way faster.

The one thing that I hate about professional sports teams, is that when the team starts losing, the head coach gets fired. The players are professional players, being paid millions of dollars. The players share the blame too.

If Keefe can’t do it then Dubas is toast. Stupid timing ... lots of pressure now ... let’s see what they’re made of.

coaches don't need to motivate guys making millions of dollars. coaches do preparation.

I agree with your first Statement, the players need to wake up. There is no reason for the team to be .500 with a roster that should make them at least in the top five. It’s Babcock’s preparations which I believe to be the issue. He refused to play the same goalie on back to backs, if a goalie is having a good game, play him again rather than leaving a backup to dry in the net. Overall Babcock never changes his gameplan, lineups remain the same and it’s a reoccurring cycle every time. I think the leafs need this new coach to better this roster.

You also have to enjoy who your playing for or under. You want them to be enjoying themselves each time they come in. I mean its still not an excuse, but could be the case I dont know.
@miggle16545 жыл бұрын
Caп¡z Aпuв¡z It’s funny because Even the St.Louis Blues which were a successful group played Binnington almost throughout the rest of the season and the playoffs. The one game they put Allen in he didn’t play great because he was on the bench for the rest of the season. Wether your team is struggling or playing great, it’s always important to play goalies to the point where they can carry the performance if they aren’t in the net for a while.
