As a seventy year old man I have lived through many of these Sunday mornings and believe me this song captures the hopelessness that we feel when we awaken with this depression..

Kris Kristofferson is one of the greatest song writers of my generation, before and after the first to recognize that was Johnny Cash. The first time he did this particular song, of course at a prison, where incidentally he met Kris and found this song, the warden wanted him to mess with the lyrics. Make them what we call today "politically correct" Johnny said okay but when he did the song he DID NOT CHANGE or omit certain words. He just told the powers that be he couldn't without hurting the integrity of the song ,the song writers or the thousands (now millions upon millions) of people who needed to HEAR this tune. True story. Thank you Johnny but truly thank you Kris!!

Don't mean to be a dick that did happen but not at a prison. It was a big cbs special or something live on tv he they said don't say stoned but he did and smiled at Kris. They met at Johnnies record label where Kris was the janitor.

@@mrjasondylan not a problem. I don't like to "share" info in case I get it wrong. So thanks. I really thought I heard (saw) them talking about it. Probably did and just blended stories.. .I hate that but hey! It's still a good story.🤗✌

@@sheilalayden185 no problem Sheila yes Kris went to Harvard was a Rhodes scholar where he studied at Oxford too then to the complete horror of his parents who actually disowned him for years he got a job sweeping up at RCA just so he could be around music and songwriters like Cash. He used to leave pieces of paper lying around the studio with lyrics on that were just mindblowingly amazing so others would find them and ask who wrote them. He also landed a helicopter on Cashs front lawn and personally gave him a copy of this song and asked him to record it saying he wrote it for him obviously his persistent ways finally paid off. Got to love it that's true story. Take care Sheila wasn't trying to prove you wrong or nothing just wanted you to know the story. I'm a bit of an obsessive compulsive when it comes to song writers.

Sheila I have no idea where you heard that story but it's not true. Kris was working in Nashville sweeping floors and such as a janitor while writing his songs. He met alot of great people there. But this song he literally flew a helicopter to Johnny Cash's house and landed in the back yard, handed it to him and told him he had written it for him. Kris has said many times in public after Johnny Cash recorded this song he ( Kris) never had to work at a regular job again. He also gave Ray Price the song " For The Goodtimes " . He wrote many songs for different artist. I never heard anyone tell that story that Johnny Cash met Kris at a prison and he discovered that song.

Well, I woke up Sunday mornin' With no way to hold my head that didn't hurt And the beer I had for breakfast wasn't bad So I had one more for dessert Then I fumbled thru my closet for my clothes And found my cleanest dirty shirt And I washed my face and combed my hair And stumbled down the stairs to meet the day I'd smoked my brain the night before On cigarettes and songs that I'd been pickin' And I lit my first and watched a small kid Cussin’ at a can that he was kickin' Then I crossed the empty street And caught the Sunday smell of someone fryin' chicken And it took me back to somethin' that I'd lost Somehow, somewere along the way On the Sunday mornin' sidewalk Wishin', Lord, that I was stoned 'Cause there's somethin' in a Sunday Makes a body feel alone There's ain’t nothin' short a' dyin' Half as lonesome as the sound Of the sleepin' city sidewalks Sunday mornin' comin' down In the park I saw a daddy With a laughin' little girl that he was swingin' And I stopped beside a Sunday school And listened to the song they were singin' Then I headed back for home And somewhere far away a lonesome bell was ringin' And it echoed through the canyons Like the disappearin' dreams of yesterday On the Sunday mornin' sidewalk wishin', Lord, that I was stoned 'Cause there's somethin' in a Sunday Makes a body feel alone There ain’t nothin' short a' dyin' half as lonesome as the sound Of the sleepin' city sidewalks Sunday mornin' comin' down On the Sunday mornin' sidewalk wishin', Lord, that I was stoned 'Cause there's somethin' in a Sunday makes your body feel alone there ain’t nothin' short a' dyin' half as lonesome as the sound Of the sleepin' city sidewalk Sunday mornin' comin' down
