Steve Gadd is a genius! What I really miss in this portrait is mentioning the fact that especially geniuses have roots. And guys like Gadd wouldn't exist without knowing their roots. And the roots are Baby Dodds, Zutty Singleton, Gene Krupa, Sidney Catlett, Buddy Rich, Papa Jo Jones, Max Roach, Tiny Kahn, Philly Joe Jones, Mel Lewis...up to Elvin Jones and Tony Williams...and his contemporary collegues.

Steve, Buddy, and Tony all tapdanced. Maybe tapdancing should be part of the curriculum for learning drums?

I didn't know Steve could tapdance like that when he was 9.

what's the song at 5:45?
@bucksmusic6 жыл бұрын
Its the band L'Image in 1977. Sadly even on the DVD (American Drummers Acheivement Awards - Honoring Steve Gadd) the name of the song or tune isn't given.

What the hell was in the water in Rochester? The talent that came out of that place is staggering.

Not just musical either. actors such as Philip Seymour Hoffman come from there.
@rickdavenport95386 жыл бұрын
@@gasaholic47 Didn't know that. But that's what i alluded to with the talent in that area. It's staggering.

I lived in Rochester for 14 years, and go back there frequently. Yep, the musical and other artistic talent pool is indeed, staggering.

The music industry has changed so much in his time too. Music has become so splintered. There's so many genres and sub genres, I don't see how the great drummers of today could get to play with the range and caliber of artists Gadd played with. It makes Gadd even more special.

No mention of Tom Scott's Apple Juice & Bob James' "Foxie"... But then again that man can churn out a studio album every week, even in his 70s. Anyone know his actual record tally?

There is a full discography on his website. Though I noticed it was missing one that I was aware of!

I think Chick's a drummer as well. Steve's childhood friend, Ron Zito, is equally monsterous. I think Ron swings better.though.
