I’m always amazed at the Level of control Steve Gadd has. Never overplays, yet contributes to the overall intensity level of the group in his own stylistic ways. Genius! The interplay between all the musicians here is phenomenal. My favorite part is during the guitar solo - amazing interplay between he and Chick, but it is also between all other members between themselves as duos as well as the entire group. It’s like that all have 5 ears! I appreciate all 24 minutes of this!

I caught up with Gadd backstage after a gig with the North Texas State University 1:00 band back in the early 80s. I told him I first heard him on chick’s leprechaun album and loved how he somehow seemed to play the tune’s melodies on the kit note for note. He responded that he learned a lot about playing drums from chick.

It's sometimes easy to forget just how formidable a drummer Steve Gadd has been - and on evidence of this performance, still is - on the drum set, particularly when we have such an array of impressively explosive drummers out there now. It's only when you watch a video like this that you realise where it ALL came from. So much of his playing has inspired generations of drummers. A remarkable achievement. Long live SG.

Something else to be said about Chick is: how he LISTENS. As the music grooves ahead, you can see how Chick attunes himself to his fellow players---eyes roving, ears open. Notice, for example, the intimate way Chick digs into what Lionel is putting out. Chick happily sustains Lionel's energy, but he also invites L into what appears to be a spontaneous duet. You can see it all from 9:00 to 12:00. Their shared contact deepens what the moment offers. On this day---2/14/2021---it looks like Chick is sending Lionel a valentine.

In the shower of well-deserved praise for the band, don’t forget Steve Wilson. His subtle use of space and confident phrasing set a high bar for the solos that followed.
