I used to live in the very far NW up near Kinlochbervie back in the 90's. The train met up with the post bus, but if the weather was bad and connections didn't meet up, you were screwed. I once got out at Lairg in -10c and had to start the 57 mile journey on foot as I was a broke student who'd just hitchhiked from Aberdeen. I had a few snacks, but jogged and walked in the black dark for 20+ miles until I got a lift to home from a fishing crew bus at 2'00 am in the morning. They had come from Buckie and gave me some food and a packet of rolling tobacco ( I smoked a bit back then :( ) I used to hitchhike all the time and enjoyed every second of it .

How can anyone say this trip is empty and bleak? It is the most stunning train trip I've ever been on. As it was many years ago, with old trains, I got to stand in the carriage entrance, lower the window, and stick my head out. Oh, the clean, clean air, the views to infinity of nature at its best. Will never forget it.

I recently went on one of my favourite railway journeys, from Edinburgh to Inverness, spectacular in any weather but magical with snow on the mountains. Unfortunately I scored an actual agonising injury while in the toilet; I snapped a muscle in my back while coughing, don’t get beyond 50, kids. Everything breaks. When I got sat back down I could only move my arms without screaming. The conductor and an off duty driver couldn’t have been kinder. They organised the paramedics and station staff at Inverness. I was given enough medication to just about get me off the train and a wheelchair to an ambulance. So hurrah for Scotrail staff.

I've done this line twice... first time was return and realistically a first date... what a great time on the train and a bank holiday in Thurso... The second was one way believe it or not to Georgemas Junction! I'd seen a motorbike for sale on Ebay and knew it would end up going cheap to me.... as I was confident... no one would travel so far north to pick it up! Having already been to Thurso, I knew the journey was very possible! Taking a train to Kingussie, taking a b&b and leaving most of my stuff... the next day an early train to Inverness and then the Thurso/Wick train... then the motorbike back to Kingussie, stayed the night again... then following day down to the ferry at Cairnryan and over to Ireland... another few miles to take me over the border and home! An adventure worthy of Steve... but I'm no you tuber! Just an adventure fan.... oh and that first date is still very happy... now over 7 years later and we happily travel as much as we can... 🥰🥰💙💚

This takes me back to my early teeanage years in the fifties when my uncle worked at Dounreay Atomic reactor, and I spent several summer holidays with his family in Thurso. In those days, the train from Inverness split into two at Georgemas Junction with half going to Wick and the other half to Thurso. I lived in Stafford and took an afternoon train to Glasgow, then the sleeper overnight from Buchanan Street to Inverness, with breakfast on the train to Thurso. Happy memories.

Coming back from Orkney the morning ferry does not meet with the morning train unless you are lucky enough to get a taxi booked way ahead of time. I rode the bus down the east coast back to Inverness and I feel I got a great overview of the beautiful upper right corner of Scotland

Another interesting video, I know that part of the country quite well. What you didn’t notice or comment on was the garden / field fences in the area. The fences are made of large slates. Once you notice them they are everywhere. You passed the north end of the Caledonian Canal. That would make a fantastic vlog. Use the van and free camp. From Corpach to the outlet at Inverness is a magical place. If you research what days to go you can see Lord of the Glens passing through Fort Augustus locks. If you catch it on a sunny summers day it will look fantastic in a vlog. The whole Canal has great stories, views and sounds. If you catch the haunting sounds of the piper at dusk at Lagan lochs …..you won’t see him but you will hear him……..another magical moment.

That was a great wee trip down memory lane for my wife and I. We didn't go by train though, we were driving up from Sheffield to go to a family wedding in Wick. We had a break in Edinburgh for a couple of nights at a friend's flat, then carried on. Once we got to Inverness we thought it was only another wee bit to Wick, but turned out to be about a 100 miles. We stayed at a wee B&B just north of Wick and for a few days after the wedding, did some exploring. There was only enough time for us to go up to John O'Groats, Dunnet Head and finishing at Thurso before heading back to Wick. I think we're long overdue for a longer visit, but we'll have to make the journey in shorter steps this time. Thanks Steve for rekindling our memories. Paul and Moira.

I had a house right next to Scotscalder station, about 9 miles from Thurso, just 20yds from the platform, and could wave to the passengers when the train (3 a day) stopped at Scotscalder (rarely!). Sotscalder is a request stop, and you have to flag the train down if you want to jump on, or tell the guard if you want to get off. By the way Dunrobin Castle station is no longer private, so anyone can use it. It's beautiful in the far north, and this must be the most scenic rail journeys in the UK.

thanks for the video Steve. Brought back a few memories. My first job was at Dounreay. I arrived in Thurso train station late one Saturday night in Sepember 1980. I’d travelled from Newcastle. It was a bit of a shock to the system walking out of a dark station into Ormlie Road, not a soul about then having to find my accomodation. Got up early Sunday and went to find a newspaper. “The papers will be in at 2pm” I was informed! I really did feel I was at the end of the world, never mind the end of the line. Beautiful part of the country to explore though. A trip along the north coast to Durness is well worth it. Looking forward to your next video.

Happy memories. I did a summer placement at Dounreay in 2021. Took me 2 days to travel up from Portsmouth (although I did take a day off in the middle to travel the West Highland line). The connecting train from the south (the Clansman) was 45 minutes late but as promised they held the last connection of the day to Thurso. Then another 4 and a half hours behind a Class 26 with 6 coaches, dividing at Georgemas. Fortunately the Ormlie Lodge hostel was right by the station and I could go down and walk on the beach in broad daylight at 11pm (early July). Enjoyed my summer, explored lots of Caithness and Sutherland and made friends that I kept for years.

I traveled on the Far North Line in April and watching this video brought back some fond memories. I left Hastings, East Sussex around 0830 that morning for Gatwick Airport. I had never been on a plane before and so this was the first of many firsts I would experience that day. I arrived into Inverness with around 55 minutes to kill before my train to Tain would leave, but sadly, I didn't get to see much of the city. 90 minutes ish later, I arrived into Tain feeling half asleep and ready for bed... well, not before going into a small pub called The Snug with my best friend and experiencing Scottish hospitality. I am hoping to take the Caledonian Sleeper to Inverness in a few months as I didn't get to see much in April, and I will fly back to Gatwick the next evening. I am planning to move to Tain in the near future and I imagine traveling on the Far North Line will be a regular activity.

I am new to your channel. I started with DFDS mini cruise and got hooked. Done about a dozen so far. Compulsive viewing. You go a long way to give us the best content. As a mark of thanks some coffee money went to your PayPal ac. I shall take my time to watch most past videos.

Look at the rainbow at 20:13!!!! This planet is sooo beautiful and even in a place that seems "bleak" it's still incredibly beautiful. Thank you for this video! Hello from northeast Tennessee, USA!

Travelled by train to Thurso (then ferry to Orkney) last year. On the return, we stayed at the Premier Inn next to Thurso Station. It's ideal for the first train to Inverness in the morning. Sure love the sections of line that run close to the coast. Interesting to note that the train actually passes (and stops) at Georgemas Junction twice each way.

We worked for a touring caravan club during the late 1990s and we had friends who were managers of the site by the golf course in Brora. We visited them for 4 days and stayed in a village B&B ,its a beautiful spot and you are well placed to visit several places of interest in the area.

A bit late watching this one Steve. Better late than never! The railway line is full of stunning scenery once it enters the flow country. I have stayed at The Forsinard Hotel, now called Forsinard Suite? A beautiful location and only a short walk from the railway station. Very good Summer birdwatching around the area.

Happy memories of my time in Thurso- 79-88. Back in those days the train was Class 37 diesel loco hauled and split at Georgemas with a loco waiting to couple up and take the back two carriages on to Thurso. The front two on to Wick. Thurso station looks exactly the same. That loco mural was there way back.
