We are up from Kinross and staying in a wee cottage in Lochcarron and heading around to Plockton, Kishorn (as my late father worked there mid 1870’s on the massive Ninian Concrete oil rig) so wanted to see where he worked and lived. Then over the Bealach Na Ba pass to Applecross. Next day we will be heading to Skye and a wee stop at Eilean Donan Castle on way back to the cottage. On way here we stopped to charge our ev at Achnasheen train station and bought food at The Midge Bite cafe that’s next to the station on the roadside. We can see the trains on the other side of the loch at night because of the interior lights. Please keep up the great clogs Steve. Helping us choose where to venture around bonnie Scotland! 🏴👍

In 1991 I took a ferry from Mallaig up to Kyle of Lochalshe, and it was before the Skye bridge was built and there was a free ferry between Kyle & Skye which l took and walked on Skye for several miles. Next morning I caught a train from Kyle to Inverness where I rented a car to drive south for a while, ending up Edinburgh. I remember seeing the shaggy red/brown Highland cattle, and toured the Glenfiddich whisky distillery. Back at Kyle I recall there was a lady who owned a castle many centuries before on the banks of the passage between Skye and the mainland, and she had a chain across the passage to charge a toll for vessels to use the channel. Quite an entreprenureal woman!

I just found this one. A real joy and nostalgic treat. I last used the train in 1989, with bus replacement to Dingwall on way out. However, the ferry was still running so getting to Kyleakin was easy as was finding accomodation. The lack of convenient buses over the bridge hardly encouraging. Whatever the 'benefits' of the bridges, travelling Scotland used to be a real adventure, the Stromeferry, Kylestrome ferry were extra adventures into the 1960s. That the Kyle railway survives is a miracle, You had a train to yourself, which proves the point.

Did the Kyle line in 1979, getting a Class 25 from Inverness and my wife and I on a Britrail pass, 1st class. Had a great run, in a Mk1 coach with compartments. Travelled with a lovely, very old lady and her grandson, who when the conductor came to check tickets, handed him some paper. He looked at it and gave the old gal a wink! They got off at Plockton and we were pretty sure it was the nod, nod,wink, wink travel pass! Still she was in her 90's and deserved a bit of comfort. Stayed at a small hotel in Lochalsh and the next day on the ferry to Skye. Can't believe they built a bridge. Would take out the romance of the crossing. Beautifully done again, well done!

Great video as always Steve. I remember way back in the 1970s arriving at Kyle station on a cold Easter Saturday afternoon. We were hostelling but foolishly hadn’t booked in advance. The hostel was full as well all the local B&Bs. A policeman advised to go to the railway station and discreetly sneak on board one of the trains that was parked up. In those days no trains ran on a Sunday on that line so they would be there until Monday. He told us that they never bothered to lock the trains so we could get on board okay but if we were caught don’t say that he sent us. It was an old style corridor carriage so were able to stretch out on the bench seats inside the mini compartments. About a dozen people ended up staying there there that night. We were caught by railway employee but he was totally cool about it and just told us to make sure we left the carriage as we found it. It was a long cold night, we had sleeping bags but I still remember never feeling especially warm. The next morning everything was closed until after lunch so we couldn’t find anywhere to eat get really warm. It then started snowing! To get out of the cold we went into a Wee Free Church just as the service was starting. Two hours not understanding a word, it was all in Gaelic. At least we were out of the cold! Fortunately we managed to get into the hostel that night then onwards to Skye the following day. Great memories.

@@steve-marsh Finland is strongly recommended. It’s not mountainous but scoured and sculpted by ice and water to create scenery to goggle the onlooker. Joensuu, Oulu, Järvenpää, Turku, Pori, Rovaniemi and Helsinki are all worth a visit and not just for the transport systems. Happy to give more advice if you need.

The scenery tugs at your heart strings, I bet it is more beautiful in the winter covered in snow, now there would be a good video for you to make if you brave the conditions, I had a cousin stuck on a train for one night in the snow when going from the Black Isle to Inverness some years ago.

Back in 1980, Michael Palin was given the old station sign during his trip from Euston to Kyle ❤
@stephenhood15162 жыл бұрын
Catching a train to the Kyle is something I do a couple of times a year since moving to a village near Elgin. I first encountered this journey many years ago after watching Michael Palin going from Edinburgh to the Kyle on the BBC TV programme: Great Railway Journeys of the World and was lucky enough to make the journey myself in the eighties. I was staying in Inverness having travelled up from Birmingham to see Jethro Tull at the Eden Court Theatre and found out It was possible to get there and back in a day, so off I went to the station but due to rail works had to catch a bus to Dingwall and meet the train there, so nothing new there Steve! The trip was wonderful, the train, a Class 37 diesel pulled several carriages including one with a specific viewing carriage and platform which cost me £12 extra, if I remember correctly. In those day's of course there was no bridge and thus it required a short ferry journey to Kyleakin which although lasting just a few minutes was none the less exhilarating. I, like you have since walked over the bridge and into Kyleakin and never tire of the breathtaking views on offer, talking of Plockton, I was there earlier this year and it's a scenic delight, by the way Steve, the Plockton Inn does a rather nice pint of Guinness, highly recommended!

Cheers for sharing, that takes me back to a golden era of travel! I wish it was still that way. Oh, and the Plockton Inn is on the Wishlist, so hopefully will not have far to roll for a Guinness when that trip happens :)

Oh hey, yet another place I know. Dingwall, I almost ended up in Strathpeffer way back in 77. My parents were looking to buy a hotel up that way, long time ago! Mighty pretty spot on the planet!!!! Thanks for the memories once again!!!!

I loved the video fog, glare and all. My husband and I took the train from Inverness to the Kyle of Loch Alsh and then the ferry to Skye many years before the bridge was built. It was a bright sunny day in early summer and my favorite train trip in Scotland. Thank you for bringing back some lovely memories.

Great Steve, I did this stretch before the days of tje Skye Bridge. Love the West Highland line too! I agree, Plockton is just gorgeous, my favourite costal village. Look forward to that video.

Given the low passenger numbers using this line, I’m amazed it has survived. It’s a good thing that is has though. 😊

Top vid as always Steve. Rail replacement bus service - there’s nothing worse. I feel Scotrail do themselves no favours - the dirty train windows are a regular feature on both the Kyle and Far North lines despite both dripping in amazing scenery. No catering on board on most (not all) services is another own goal. So much potential to realise so little desire to do so.
@steve-marsh2 жыл бұрын
Aye, we're not asking for a Canadian-style viewing carriage (although it would be nice) just clean windaes! And aye, a wee cuppa wouldn't go amiss too. I also really like Scotrail staff, they are so friendly, but feel for the conditions they have to work under too sometimes. Cheers mate!
@MrCmac7312 жыл бұрын
Top comment and every one so true,seems scotrail is too central belt oriented but with just a little smart thinking could so improve the offer on the west highland and far north lines. These lines regularly top tourist lists of things to do and see when visiting this country but could be so much better .

Another great video Steve!! This pulled at my heart strings as We know this part of your beautiful Highlands rearly well. The scenery is truely stunning. It would take us two days to get to Inverness. Flying from Italy to London and then the sleeper ( old and new ) to Inverness and then a rental car to Gairloch . Later Ullappol. We could see clearly Skye from Gairloch. Loved Applecross and Plockton. The scenery though. I remember the first time just stopping the car and stepping out and looking at Lock Maree and the views and thinking is this for real!! Thanks again Steve 👍🏻

¡Hola buenas tardes Steve! Please don’t beat yourself up so much - despite the outward non-train journey, your photographic skills still provided viewers with a superb picture diary of the day. Skye bridge captures, with the long sun effect, were simply, a delightful. All that said, the return journey photography was definitely worth the wait and, judging by your smiles, more than a simple travel experience. Well done Steve! Stay safe and well. Un saludo. Gary

I had more luck than you when I went to the Kyle. The train was running, and the Skye Bridge had not been built! I went on the train, and over the sea to Skye on the ferry. When I got to Kyleakin, I had a cup of tea in the teashop,and "Over the sea to Skye" was playing!". An amusing, if unromantic video. Thanks for uploading.

Many moons ago my then wife and I stayed in Plockton, in those days you could hire a motor boat which we did and sailed it down to Lochcarron for a lunch, then on the return the damn thing ran out of petrol, had to beach it and beg a nearby farm for fuel, finally got back to Plockton late and the hire place was shut, moored the boat and couldn't pay (you paid after the hire in those days) just as well !! To end the day into the Plockton Inn for their superb fresh Langoustines with garlic and crusty bread ! Also brilliant on the 5th November they set off fireworks from the wee island just opposite the Inn ! Plockton with its sea side palms is in my heart forever ever ! Cheers Steve 👍

That was one of my all time favourite train journeys. Back when I was there, there was no bridge. It was October and in the middle of a huge storm. It took that little ferry about three times as long to get to the other side. I stayed in Portree overnight. Thanks for the memories.
