She conveys so much with just a look or a little smile. She puts up with far more than many young women would do. Steve, I got the Grimaldi ferry from Livorno to Bastia in Corsica earlier this year and was amazed at how nice it was. Lots of good spaces to sit, clean, and altogether it was a great experience. I was going to Corsica in order to take the train through the mountains from Bastia to Ajaccio: what an amazing journey and worth going just for that. BUT then, I had booked on Grimaldi from Ajaccio to Touloun in France, the overnight. After the previous ferry I thought, what could possibly go wrong.... I hadn't got a cabin because it was a short overnight and am used to sleeping on seats or with a blanket or two on the Italy-Greece ferries. This was the worst ferry I've ever been on - one small eating /sitting area, no other public sofas or lounge areas, and one large room, bare floor, for deck passengers. It was dirty, smelt truly awful and I had the worst crossing ever. I've never seen a good review of Grimaldi, but at least the short one to Corsica was okay. Late on arrival though. Of course.

Steve, you forgot one pro on this ill fated cruise and that is the lift. I am handicapped and require a lift to get around. Stairs are my downfall. So when I saw you get on the lift, I was happy. If other ferries have lifts, please include one clip with you getting on or off. That way I can decide if I can add that ferry to my list of possible future adventures.

I can't speak for all ferries, but I've never been on one in Europe that doesn't have lifts. I'm sure all the ones here in Greece do (even if retrofitted) and some are over 40 years old. Isn't it illegal for them not to now? If you ever take a ferry here, everybody is escorted to their cabin by a pursar who can help you with directions and questions about the ship etc.
@derektaylor294112 күн бұрын
Hello Jeff- I agree with Gary. Every regular passenger ship in European or British waters will have lifts that you can use. There may be a few 'commuter' ferries still running around the smaller Greek Isles, but even then they normally have lifts for most of the main decks. I can think of some ships that have very high observation decks where there is an elevated area above the rest and these don't have lift access, but still access to all the other deck space. Access really isn't a problem- getting on, travelling around or getting off. There are always mobility friendly cabins too. Ports themselves have become much better designed too, with assistance always available. If I can help with specifics, please tag me in with any questions. Went on a trip with Grimaldi once during spring and my wife and I found those dog cages. It was very hot in there, so they put a blower in the door opening wich was very loud. All the dogs where so scared and sad. We stayed all night to calm those dogs and refresh the water. Didn't see a crew member once. I have a picture of my wife sleeping on the floor there. So sad...
@steve-marshАй бұрын
That really is sad :(

Maybe that's why people didn't use the cages and just kept the dogs with them eh!I don't have a pet but those cages were just wrong on all fronts! Poor wee things!😕🙏

Dogs treated like cargo, basic cages and looked like loud music playing all night. People who take their dog on that boat unfortunately are not the nicest people.

What a great video! Absolutely superb. I've noticed something about charging GoPro batteries. If you use a EU double adapter, sometimes you only get half the power through each, which means nothing charges. It's as if there has to be a minimum voltage before a charge will work. I want to see another GRIMaldi ferry video!

Lesson learned mate! I was so worried when I realised I might not have enough battery power, but at least it took my mind off Grimaldi for a while :D

See my comment above! It's very disappointing as you think this particular excursion would be very popular amongst all Euro travelers; however, Grimaldi appear to be a shocking operator on this particular service.

On the US Alaska ferries travelling from Washington state to Alaska, in the summer you can pitch your tents on the open decks or use your sleeping bags in the lounge areas. There are public showers available for the long trip up to Alaska for the campers if you don’t have a cabin. The scenery is the same as you would see travelling on a luxurious cruise ship, but it takes longer, and the Alaska ferries ticket prices are cheaper and are subsidized by the state since it is the Alaska Marine Highway System.

You two are amazing, and so professional making the best of such a situation. You absolutely would love a cruise - you must do it just for a vacation. Don't worry about a 6 plus day crossing. They keep you very busy, more to do than time to do it all! Love the video despite the conditions.
@jimpenny8771Ай бұрын
The younger people on board probably thought it was great. The fact that you had Alicja with you meant you could make the best of it, and that's what you have to do. She's a ray of sunshine and a counter to your dour outlook (OK, I was born in Scotland too). When our Eurostar train broke down between Brussels and Amsterdam a couple of years ago, we also made the best of it, adding our own dialog to what the response crew were saying to each other outside, and that's what made it into a fun experience. Whenever you said Grimaldi, I kept thinking of the Griswalds for some reason. It had that National Lampoons feel to it.
@TrijnvdBoschАй бұрын
I must say... even though at first I thought "Apparently I'm too old for this shit, but the younger people will enjoy this", I am now genuinely doubting that. Nobody looked like they were having a good time. When still waiting outside, the vibe seem happy, but on board, I didn't see much smiling. Almost no people in the entertainment areas - the combination of loud music in a sterile environment with a dozen stationary people is so depressing. Of course, there was a party in Cyber Horror room, some I'm sure some people will have danced. But with so many areas closed, with such long waiting times, with almost no decorations or vibe at all, I can't imagine many younger people liking it either.

I was watching some of the old camping videos and wanted to suggest the islands in the Bristol channel, flatholm and steepholm. You can get a boat to them from Cardiff Bay and Weston - super - Mare and you can camp or stay on them or take boat trips out for a few hours. They're a nature reserve, there's a wee pub, relics from the world wars and Napoleonic wars. Flatholm also has a Victorian lighthouse. Might be up your alley!

From the start of this video I immediately thought I would never travel on this ship, thank you for this tip and I really felt sorry for you. Steve, I was waiting for this video! I travelled to Sardinia in September and I can honestly say that all 3 ferries we were involved with across from Italy were awful. Firstly, GNV changed our departure time from Genoa (to Olbi) from 2359 to 1930 with only 4 days notice (our train schedule meant we could not make it - I am still battling for refund). I then booked Moby Lines - ok boarding but the cabin was as dirty as yours and food was virtually inedible. Then returned from Olbi to Livorno with Grimaldi on another filthy ship with dreadful service, overflowing bins and a complete scrum to disembark. Well, let's say it was an experience! Keep up with the great videos, solo and with Alicja!
