Things don't go to plan on my short visit to Gibraltar...

Landing at Gibraltar Airport has long been on my list and today it finally happens! I also had a nice wee hiking trail planned for my short time here, but as you'll see, that idea gets smashed by The Rock. These things happen and it's my own fault for allocating zero time here, but come and watch me suffer anyway :)
If you are planning a trip to Gibraltar, I'd highly recommend it, such a cool, unique place to visit, and SO much more to see than what I had the chance to show you today. My whole visit was planned around walking the Mediterranean Steps, and I had just about enough time to do that and no more, so when things went a bit awry, I ran out of time pretty quickly! But the history, monkeys, caves, suspension bridge, beautiful beach with Saharan sand, views, architecture, mix of cultures, there really is a lot to love about this place, so if you learn anything from this video, make it to stay here a bit longer than I did! (and to book your accommodation well in advance or like me you might have to retreat across the border to find affordable lodgings).
Flight Details:
EDI GIB EZY6933 4 Oct 2022, 07:10 11:35 Seat 14F (for a while!) £45.98
I'll be back next week with a look at a Spanish overseas territory not too far from Gib. Forgive me for a less than energetic video today, I left the house at 1am to catch this flight :D

We watched your Gib video when it was first uploaded and grinned from start to finish. Last Friday we managed to achieve our goal of visiting Gib and seeing it for ourselves. We saw the town, the beautiful old buildings, the marina and the airport. We walked across the runway and watched a plane take off. What a pleasure. Memories that will last a lifetime. Thanks for the inspiration Steve! Andrew and Emma 😁

My only time in Gib was on one-day stop in a West Med seaonal relocation cruise, and then on to Madeira and Miami for the winter Caribbean season schedule. We walked a mile or so from the cruise dock into town including the runway crossing under grey skies to learn that the cable car was closed due to rain and high winds, so we went shopping in those British shops for reading matter on the cruise and both bought leather blazers. Rather a disappointment, though we definitely helped the Gibraltan economy! Glad you saw the Barbary apes. It's said that if they leave the rock, the British will too.

A great, well presented vlog. We went to Gib last April and the road tunnel is now open, so only pedestrians cross the runway. We loved it so much, we're returning in May. Saved money on flights (thanks to my lad working at Easyjet) so we're staying on the Sunborn as a one-off to celebrate a big birthday. Annoyingly, we have an airport the other end of town but they no longer fly to Gib & the train to Gatwick costs more than the flights. Hopefully, the wife will pluck up the courage to go up the cable car this time

Crossing the runway on foot way back in 2000 was a memorable experience, especially when on our return we watched countless smugglers hiding cigarettes on their person before going through the frontier 🥴 We so liked exploring all aspects of Gibraltar and “the rock”. As someone who both worked and lived in Gib preplanning the Med Steps would have saved you a lot of Time and trouble. A cab ride from the Airport to the Pillars of Herculese or a Bus ride could do the same. While I was stationed in Gib with the Military we used to climb the Med Steps at least once a week. Later in life I returned to Gib to live and work there for a few years. I enjoyed it and would return again sometime before I am measured for my Coffin.

I went to Gibraltar in the 1970's and thoroughly enjoyed my holiday. It was not so built up then, and they. the Gibraltarians certainly did not want to go back to being Spanish. Went to the Casino on the rock where I won £22 on the fruit machine, bearing in mind it was the 70's it was a nice win, and the cave which was spectacular. The monkeys are something else had to be careful of how much you declared to them. Also went to the Trafalgar cemetery still being kept all those years later. I really did enjoy that holiday.

I've spent a lot of time in Gib over the years. There is a much easier walk to the top of the rock from town, up the Union Jack steps. It's also worth going to see the Northern Defences which have been cleared over the last few years, before that they were known as the jungle and your parents would give you hell if they knew you'd been there.

He's right about the signage though. I think you need to allow a little more time to get your bearings with Gibraltar. There is a lot to see in a very small space, but you are better off asking the locals, or get on a bus and ask the driver, they are fantastic, they know everyone and everything, and the passengers will definitely get involved in helping you.

I've been here before and its an experience you have to do, the British culture so close to spain is such a unique feeling, also theres police and policia there...some very cool and random querks. The hike up the rock can be achieved by cable cart, taxi or the obvious walking, I walked up and in the summer/april times, it can get pretty hot so have some food and drink with you, some excellent views from above and meeting the monkeys near the top is worth it in my opinion.

Awww, so sorry you couldn't go up into the trails, but I love the photos and captions with the Macaques. I love the one who was channeling your disappointment and the one eating the potato chips. We did this trip about 4 yrs ago, went to the top, ate a great lunch at some restaurant there, watching the planes on the runway, which was super cool. I did have a hitchhiker on my backpack, apparently my daughter left something (food) in my side pocket and this big fella jumped on me, no matter how fast I tried to swing/spin myself he never fell off. I bet I am on lots of videos or photos, but will have to make a plug for LLBean's great backpack, not a tear or mark from the macaques claws. Best parts was the meal and of course seeing all the macaques, though walking across a runway like that was pretty darn cool too. Safe travels Steve, here's hoping you can do it again some day!

I was on a budget holiday in Morocco for two weeks and we had a day trip to Gibraltar - ferry from Tangiers. We didn't have a lot of time to look round and I was always planned to go again at some time in the future. Well, still waiting to go back. I live in Gibraltar in the Upper Town, even for me it is a challenge to walk home. When I saw that you were walking with a backpack and in warm clothes, I immediately thought "he's going to die" and then I realized that you were going in the wrong direction 😂

Hi Steve Brings back memories of our trip to Gib 5 years ago. I can relate to the hilly walking, in the end all by taxi as were staying at the Rock hotel which you stood outside as you were trying to make your way up the hill. We never made the cable car, but your video showed us what we missed, thank you. Regards Crawford

@@steve-marsh I think you are worrying too much. Some things are out of your control despite the research you must do. Even though many things seem last minute in your videos :D. What I love and appreciate about your videos is how you always respect nature and caputre fantastic scenes while trying to give us some backstories and that is what draws us in, as if we are there with you. I wouldn't want to do all those uphill walks but you do it for us and the views never disappoint. I hope you can continue to grow your channel, as much as I love the Scotland videos, I like these videos abroad too.

Fabulous. I am now going to dig out my pics and video from 1997 and compare the changes to your views. So many high rise buildings now, wow. Fair bit more to see in Gib so a return is a must Steve. That accommodation looked perfect for nipping in and out of Gibraltar. Looking forward to the next video. All the best. Alastair.

Great video Steve. Visited Gibraltar and La Linea in June, had a great time. We did a coach tour which took us to Europa Point and to the top of the Rock. It was also good to get our passport stamped in La Linea.
@oliver8296
@oliver8296 2 жыл бұрын
There are online booking bag storage options in Gib, I've used 'radical storage' in Ocean Village area. The bus you took to Europa point actually stops very close to the windmill hill/Jewish cemetery entrance to the nature reserve, which is where you access the med steps. It isn't impossibly far from the cable car station to reach the top of the med steps if you wanted to do it in reverse. That Engineer road closure was catching out locals as well as tourists 😂

Just before the pandemic we tried to drive Gibraltar and back from Antequera in a day. Got in sight of the Rock and decided to turn back. It was a long drive and we wouldn't have had any time left in Gib but now looks like turning around was the right decision! Again a brilliant video and we all now know the origin of the term 'going ape'.

Wow Steve, you found a new way to suffer for us. I really feel for you in this video. Plus your normal excellent organisational skills let you down for once! Loved the view of the landing as the scale of the rock is hard to judge. Great cable car ride showing how high it is. Saw some bond locations up the rock though so very worthwhile. You have my sympathy, Steve. And it wasn't a "terrible" video! It's always interesting to see places that we don't always get the chance to travel to, even if you weren't able to make it to the one place you really wanted to show us. It's a few years now since my wife and I spent a few days with friends in Gib. We were also able to spend some time in their beach house along the Spanish coast and take a trip up to Ronda. But we didn't get to see the Mediterranean steps! Looking forward to the next instalment...
