I found the cheapest way home, but was it worth the few quid I saved?

Don't let me build your travel itinerary or this might happen. The plan was simple: get home as cheaply as possible. And believe it or not, this was it on my date of travel. But was it worth it? Sit back, relax and enjoy the journey.
My itinerary:
Algeciras - La Línea: ComesBus, 15:00/15:25 €2.50
Gibraltar - London LGW: easyJet, 21:05/00:15 £60.00
Gatwick - Victoria: Southern, 01:30/02:30 £9.00
London Hotel: days.co.uk, £100 (refunded by Novotel)
London - Edinburgh: FlixBus, 22:00/07:10 £24.99
(FlixBus extras £12.49 for extra seat; £4.49 for 'panorama' seat)
There are of course going to be cheaper ways to get home, but I was booking late after my plans were changed at the last minute beyond my control. Based on the refund for my day hotel though, it was a fairly cheap total of £113.50.

Two tips if you're ever stuck overnight in London: Take the N9 Night Bus to Heathrow and back (maybe costs £3.20 return and kills 3/4 hours but check the over-complicated touch in/out rules: 4.95 maximum I think for 2 or more trips), or take the Oxford Tube from Victoria Coach Station to Oxford - £18 return for the 5 hour return journey (including wait at Oxford) and it runs 24/7. Not ideal but I guess it's like for you taking the night coaches between Glasgow and Edinburgh (cheaper than a hotel).

@@steve-marsh I faced this a few years ago when I was accidentally locked out of a place I was staying at Wimbledon. I thought I'd go to Victoria Station to wait until morning, but I saw there are guards there now to clear out the riff-raff. Luckily, on arriving at my local station, I met my landlady's son arriving home so all was fine. I was even given a good bottle of white to compensate, but I still have nightmares about it.

Even better, just book a bed in St Christophers Inn hostel in Hammersmith. Average rate is about £14.90 with breakfast included. Hostels are a world away from the old style hostels. A bunk with pull round curtains, charging points, a reading light, comfortable bedding, and a locker for your luggage. Plus nice hot shower and a pub downstairs. Better than roughing it on a night bus to Heathrow or to Bristol and back.

Cool video. There's nothing viewers love more than a bit of discomfort! My tip is to hang around at an airport to waste time instead of a city centre. It's warm, it's safe, and you can relax and sometimes even nod off for an hour if you find a comfy seat.

If you managed to get on a Thameslink, here's a tip: 1st class at the back of the train (depending on which way train is facing) is always 'declassified' (you can access it with a standard class ticket). They have tables, nicer seats and most importantly: chargers!

My wife and I chanced upon this report, thoroughly enjoyed it, and took out a subscription. "Was it worth the [money] [we] saved ?" is a question we've asked ourselves more than once and usually the answer has been "no". But you never know that ahead of time and "traveller's luck" (or lack of it) often plays a big role. One thing though - when you're travelling alone you aren't subjected to "analysis" by an irritated travel partner about whose great idea this was !

I have been watching a lot of videos on travel in Japan. They seem to have so many more options to lay down for the night than either a full hotel or wander the streets - anywhere from reasonably priced pod hotel to just a clean, safe spot on a floor. I wish other countries had more options like that.

You made me recall a comment a friend made about 40 years ago when on a budget trip to visit shrines, we discovered we'd need to bivy overnight in the gardens of a shrine in Kyoto on a cold night. In the dark, we decided we needed to get cardboard to use as a groundsheet - from someone's garbage. The process of retrieving the cardboard started quite a cacophany of barking dogs. Upon seeing someone come and look out the window to discover the source of the rucus, that's when my friend TIm said, "the housewife just told her husband, 'no worries honey, it's just foreigners in the garbage again', I think we're all good"! As @Erin McGrath noted above, I also don't think I'm up for this sort of adventure anymore.

Pod hotels exist, it's just the reasonably priced bit that hasn't been taken on-board. The few that have sprung up seem to be marketed as some mix of "experience" and green waving eco bullshyt aimed at bearded twats with too much money and no sense.

@@steve-marsh I think its down to behaviors. I stayed in a capsule hotel in Japan and people are very respectful and keep quiet. They also dont make a mess and follow all the rules. I doubt very much a capsule hotel in London would work so well - I can just imagine a bunch of pissed up lads coming in at 2am and causing chaos

How you fall flat on your face in that hotel… It was in autumn 2000. I was working for a company in Cologne, some 8½ miles from where I live. They suddenly put us on a two shift in the middle of a week. No buses or trains available to get there for the early shift which started at 5:30am, pay too pishpoor to own a car, so the remaining option was my bicycle. From Tuesday to Wednesday, early shift began. When I got home on Friday it must have been about 2:30pm. I dropped my backpack and fell flat on my face onto my bed with my winter jacket still on, just to relax a minute as I was miles beyond knackered. I woke up around the same hour on Saturday, in exactly the position I hit the bed 24 hours earlier… Falling over like that is a sign that the schedule is in danger! 😂 Very interesting trip! 🤗

Even in spring and autumn it's not too bad, plus everywhere has brilliant a/c so you can duck into any shop or cafe and cool off. Just forget June to September as it's like an oven.

Oh Steve, you were close to a solution for the night in London! There is a fairly infamous 24hr cafe called Polo Bar that is next to Liverpool Street station. It's safe and food is good apparently (and cheapish by London standards). Clientele are interesting too as you would expect at night! I haven't been myself, but was seriously considering it a few weeks back when thanks to the rail strikers I had a long planned music concert trip ruined because I couldn't get a train home the same night, and as I didn't find out until late all London hotels within M25 were either booked or hiked up their prices to levels I refuse to pay. So after much searching I found out about the cafe. The only reason I didn't come out to London and tough out the night (and I now regret not doing it) was because of a health condition I have which would not have taken kindly to 20+hrs of no sleep before I may have gotten home, but next time for you maybe worth a punt? Thanks for the heads-up on the day use hotel website. Never knew about that before 👍. Would have helped me out during the rail strike!

As a FT traveler I am amazed at what you put yourself through. Am not wealthy, but since sleep is my "religion", I make sure that the hours between 8 PM and 5 AM I am able to lie flat and nod off. It can be a train, ship, biz class airline seat or, preferably, an apartment rental or hotel. And yes, I have to take a biz class seat as I can't sleep in economy seats now that I am older. I have often spent more flying to a continent than I spend in the first month living on that continent!! I long for the days of ocean going transportation to return ......

Steve you made an important point about lack of seating in airports etc and it becomes more important as you get older. Why is there not more seating when folk have to wait for long periods? An empty airport and not being routed though 'duty free' is a real rarity! After years travelling all I want to do now is jump in the car and walk around a quite loch in the rain! I'm really starting to find airports the most tiring, uncomfortable places to spend any amount of time! Especially when they then call you for boarding when the inbound aircraft is still 200 miles away, that's my other gripe :D They seem to view seating as a luxury when it's very much a necessity!

Fast take off acceleration is due to the runway length. The faster they can get up to V1 / V2 / Rotate speed the more runway distance they have available to abort (And stop in time)

Gibraltar has a (relatively) short runway and frequent windshear. Because of that I'd imagine that the airlines discourage their crews from derating the engines much on takeoff.

The reason for the fast take-off is for when the Spanish get petty or downright nasty, depending how they are feeling when they get up in the morning. The regular pilots stay in practice. Gibraltar is essentially a military airport and as you say, the runway IS short. The border runs in an arc in Algeciras Bay exactly half way between the Gibraltar Coast and the Spanish Coast. There is a ramp at the eastern end of the runway. Maybe, Steve's Easy Jet job didn't need it but my BA aircraft, in 1974, a bit bigger than that Easy Jet thing, DID need it. Although we landed from the East, the Spanish were causing trouble about taking off to the East and the prevailing wind is from the West. Steve's flight took off Eastwards after dark when things were cooler and the Spanish are being quiet at the moment. When taking off Westwards, because of the really tight turn to port (anti-clockwise) to stay in British airspace, if the plane is too heavy or the temperature is too high, then there is a danger of stalling. When I flew out, the Spanish were being particularly nasty. Even though it was March, on that evening it was very, VERY and unexpectedly hot and 4 of us nearly got left behind because the temperature was too high for everyone else AND us and our luggage, I hasten to add, we WERE travelling standby at a ridiculously cheap price. We hung around under a bit of shade with our baggage and the captain and another member of the crew, the captain delaying the flight to see if the temperature would drop sufficiently before he really had to go to get his slot at Heathrow. Some passengers also got off and wandered around because of the heat. The temperature did drop sufficiently at the very last moment. The captain got the message from the tower. Our baggage was hurriedly loaded and everyone got on the plane. The plane was backed up the ramp and the engines ramped up to full power. The brakes were released and we were catapulted down the runway with the sound of thunder as the runway surface was not the best at that time, our cheeks sunken in and somewhere close to our ears. Directly after lift-off, we tipped sharply to port and we had the most magnificent rolling view of the rock as we did a bit more than 180° to head East and then North-East with the Spanish coast in view a dozen or so miles away. As you see in the video, Steve's flight was inland of Málaga but not us. British flights few over Spanish territory all the time dumping and picking up tourists and to Madrid etc. The Spanish econmoy would have been badly hit if they had tried to ban all British flights .... NO ... only flights in and out of Gibraltar. The stupidity of the Spanish petty nastiness was that the instant we were heading North-East, because of IATA rules, we came under Barcelona Air Traffic Control. The Spanish may get nasty again soon. In the recent elections in Spain, Vox have gained ground. They may be vital for the formation of a stable coalition and, as always, they are bellicose about Gibraltar. Many Gibraltarians have grown fat on on-line gambling and they have nice houses across the border up in the mountains but they expect to run back into Gibraltar if the Spanish really do turn nasty again. They don't want their sons or themselves forced into military service. Let us hope that cooler heads remain in charge in Madrid. Spain's position is indefensible, not only because since the Rock became British, Spain fell totally under the French (Napoleon) and were rescued by British troops dying on Spanish soil to free them from the French. Back as an independent country, they fought against each other and had revolution after revolution ending with the Spanish Civil War and Franco and his mob taking over. If there is any legitimacy to the current Spanish State, it only begins in 1939 and Gibraltar had been British sovereign territory for 235 years by then. For any Madrid cabal to lay claim to Gibraltar is about as ridiculous as them laying claim to Argentina or Venezuala, or Chile. Their claim is doubly indefensible whilst they continue to occupy territory which is Moroccan.

9:39 category C aircrafts depating from Gibraltar have to add on approx 10-15knotts more than usual on departure this is due to the unpredictable turbulence caused by the rock. So a normal A320 take off is aound 150knotts (175mph) but for Gibraltar its take off speed is 160-165knotts

Steve, advice from an Aussie. When it's hot wear short sleeves, light coloured (reflects the heat) and one layer only. Undo the first two buttons, wear a wide brim hat that shades your neck (not baseball), apply sunscreen and carry water.

Awesome Video Steve! I'd go to that Gibraltar airport just for that view, WOW! Never have I seen such cheap airport drink prices, better stock up! lol. You were so right to take the train from Gatwick, we took the bus from there to London and it was full of traffic delays and and overall nightmare... So funny you know we were going to stay at that same Novotel and switched at the last minute due to issues.. Kind of glad we did since it seems you had issues as well, Sorry about that Mate ;( Man how are you so still awake with such little sleep argh I'd be dead.. You’re officially a nutter 😂 I’ve been in this situation in London but not exactly planned. I’d planned to get the sleeper train, never booked a ticket and unbeknown to me it was cancelled just before I tried to book. I literally sat on the night tube and night buses all night. Wasn’t comfy but at least it warm! Glad you enjoyed Flixbus better than NatEx. I do like their services between London and Scotland used it a few times and they’re now also running between Glasgow and Aberdeen for less than a tenner on a good day! Cheers Steve.

I do love these challenges. Seeing different places and modes of transport through different peoples eyes. I usually travel a lot myself but since CoVID and Brexit, I've been loath to get anywhere near a passport control right now. I do want to load up the Tigra though, and head to Scotland one time and do a tour of the country one summer. Next year, I have Georgia planned (provided Gollum doesn't try to blow it up,) so it'll be personally interesting to see how travel has been affected by these factors. Thanks for your video mate, look forward to seeing more! 👍

I did something similar just a couple of weeks ago. The return journey from New York back to Munich took me 23 hours because I opted for the cheap Norse flight to Berlin instead the expensive direct flight to Munich. I saved a lot of money, but it was double the time that it would have taken if I had gone directly.

I love watching some travel content, with the reviews as you go - especially as you're reviewing the sort of travel options & places I could do, none of this "crossing half the world in a First Class suite" stuff! You are maybe heading towards "Steve tortures himself with terrible overnight journeys" as a channel theme though, and just your description of trying to while away the small hours in Central London made me feel that pain of doing it myself again. Next time - McD's on Strand (right next to Charing Cross) does 24h opening! (Oh, and I think you briefly woke up in Sheffield.)

Great video Steve. I like Flix Bus too There is a Hilton Hotel at Gatwick that's connected via an internal walkway from the South Terminal. For an all night stay it's often cheaper than the pod hotel. The pod hotel is good if you only need a couple of hours kip after a long flight. Watch check in check out times as some hours are a lot dearer than others.

Wow awesome to see you in my neck of the woods, being in La Linea and Gibraltar! I was like noooooo don't get the plug adapter, because through airside there are benches with both UK and EU sockets. (unless you desperately needed charge). The new Gibraltar air terminal is awesome, and one of my favourite airports to fly into and out from. That is unless the weather is bad and the flight diverts to Malaga. Then it is an absolute shambles with busses, cancellations etc.! The viewing area is awesome and I just love to watch the planes coming in and out and seeing the airfield at work. Awesome airport! Just a local pro tip for next time you fly into, or out of Gibraltar. For outbound from Gibraltar, sit on the LEFT hand side of the aircraft, and for inbound in to gibraltar, sit on the RIGHT hand side of the aircraft. If the wind is blowing the right way, you'll go out the other way and circle right round the rock and the views are amazing! Some of the best views in aviation! If you don't make that side of the aircraft then you can get some great views of the Sierra Nevada mountains, and in winter they are full of snow. At 10:43 I think that is malaga yes. Flights tend to route up there and then turn north. And finally, the big nasty cloud over the rock is the "Levanter" cloud. It happens when the wind is blowing humid from the east. Puts the main centre of Gibraltar into a gloomy grey until it dissipates in the afternoon, or the sun finally starts setting in the West. Really makes the place feel even more British! But yeah great to see Gibraltar featured, not even Noel Philips has made it there! And he calls himself an Av Geek! haha.

Well, a somewhat crazy plan for sure. As usual you pulled it off, even if you managed to exhaust yourself in the process. As usual, a great watch though. I had my first trip north of the border is a few years a couple of days ago to see my favourite band in Glasgow. So LNER to Edinburgh and ScotRail across to Glasgow Central (stopped at virtually every station) which took 90 minutes. The return i took advantage of the express from Queen Street (much better). I found everyone on ScotRail to be really friendly and helpful so a big thumbs up for them. One weird thing (I sure you've noticed) is that at each stop they remind passengers to 'take all your belongings with you BEFORE you leave the train'. It strikes me that this is impossible. You can only take them with you WHEN you leave the train. I wonder which committee came up with that one? Anyway, I planned the trip somewhat inspired by your channel and loved every minute of the journey. A pretty cheap comfortable stay in a premier Inn afforded me plenty of time each day to have a good wander around Glasgow and Edinburgh. I see why you do it.
