Hi Steve, I'm Marco from the Azores. I love your videos and I've been following you on KZbin for a while now. I'm originally from the island of Santa Maria but have been living in São Miguel for 20 years. I live in the village of Capelas, just 15 minutes from the city of Ponta Delgada. I was very surprised and happy to hear that you came to the Azores. If you're here on Christmas Day, I'd be happy to invite you to come and have lunch at my house with my family so that you don't have to spend Christmas Day alone. Have a great holiday in the Azores! Marco Raposo

Boarding not boarding with Ryanair seems to be their cunning plan to keep costs down. It's as if they must get the punters away from the boarding gate asap, even if it does mean standing in a stairwell or outside in the cold. Perhaps there's an airport fee if the departure gate doesn't get cleared by a certain time. Your Grimaldi moment made me laugh!
@mmcgifyКүн бұрын
It's to help with turnaround times. If everyone is scanned through the boarding gate and ready, as soon as the plane is ready then people can start boarding.

As soon as I saw the video title I thought of the Azores. I went to Sao Miguel 7 years ago for a 10 day trip around the island and it was absolutely beautiful. Watched one the most beautiful night skies I've ever seen in my life, as well as enjoying the volcanic hot springs. Definitely one of the most memorable trips in my life! And indeed very affordable for such a remote place.

Now that you mention it: Look at a place called 100 Montaditos at Spanish airports. Its basically a Spanish fast food chain. And its surprizingly affordable, even in airports. Dont know if all airports have one but ive been to one at Madrid airport last year. They mainly serve mini-bocadillos so you might want to order 3 or 4 to have a complete meal. You just have these paper menu's you have to check boxes on to let them know which ones you want and hand it to the cashier. Its not the most gourmet Spanish food youll have, but I always like it. Fast, decent quality, local and not expensive so yeah, what more can you ask for?

The Azores are still on my bucket list. 20 years ago I came very close to go hopping all 9 islands with a friend. Didn't happen because we couldn't get a flight to one of the islands. Instead we went to mainland Portugal and saw some awesome stuff there (old rock paintings in a cave and outside in a gorge that took some doing to get there). Since then my health deteriorated and income ditto but maybe one day huh? Meanwhile, I live vicariously through your videos, thank you for making them. Merry christmas and best wishes for the new year to you and Alicja.

Dear Steve (please allow me to treat you like an old friend), I've traveled with you and thanks to you for a long time and I always get great happiness from the airplane's cabin sights and sounds. They bring me very fond memories of my mom and dad. I appreciate very very much that you leave those 'as is' and the great quality of your sounds recording. Closing my eyes, with the earphones on, I feel there. Then, when I heard the background music you added to the taxi ride (which I didn't mind at all) I appreciated even more and noticed your purpose during the flight. Thank you very much. From a friend.

Been to The Azores by accident. Took Azores Airlines back in 2017, Toronto to Gran Canaria, what was supposed to be a 2hr layover turned into almost 3 days in Ponta Delgada. The Azores Airlines flight from Toronto was 5 hours late departing so we missed our connection to Gran Canaria, which only flew a couple of times a week. Azores Airlines put us up in a hotel for 2 nights and we had a ton of time to explore. Missed 3 days of our holiday in Gran Canaria but enjoyed Ponta Delgada. BTW, we took one of SATA's small props you pointed out ( a Q400 ) all the way from Ponta Delgada to Gran Canaria, a 3 hours journey over nothing but ocean in a small prop. Azores Airlines looks much improved since that crazy journey, oh and BTW, I always check the flap settings too! LOL Enjoy!

Me and my family lived in Ponta Delgada in the 1960’s. My father worked for Portuguese airlines. I’ve been back twice and it is one of the most mysterious, magical and extremely interesting place due to being an active volcanic island. Lots of hot springs and tropical flora and fauna. The weather can be very overcast and foggy one minute then become very warm and sunny. The climate itself is very unique.

I'm very happy to hear these travel tidbits as I've only flown thru the Azores in US military aircraft to refuel for someplace else. The furthest from a plane we were allowed was to let smokers stretch their legs [I'm not one], away from the refueling operations but the opportunity to step away from a very spartan military aircraft was great. Steve's videos add substance to what was just another tarmac, airport fence, security and noisy takeoff. Merry Christmas Mstrdiver - US Army -- 1973 to 1995

1.Another fascinating video. There is another way to get there with some careful planning, changing at Porto, but it does not connect from Edinburgh, but it does from Stansted with Ryanair. That is one of the disadvantages of travel videos, First I have to find the destination on Google Earth and then check various ways to get there. A good thing I am retired! 2.Now Steve, what would also be helpful is if you made clear on what DATES you traveled. I was very confused after seeing you on Svalbard And then in Rome to take Grimaldi ferry to Barcelona. The videos don't have to be in exact order but dates would help. 3. Seeing you getting that early flight from Edinburgh reminded me of why I don't travel much nowadays. I don't sleep well so the idea of an early start is horrific. Happy Christmas.

Hi Steve, so pleased to see you have gone to the Azores. I visited the islands a few years ago on an escorted tour. In PDG we stayed at a hotel opposite the harbour and one of Fred Olsen’s liners (Boudicca) was moored only a short distance away. The streets look so different with the dark and light patterns. The small plane you saw at the airport takes people between islands - almost like a bus. No reserved seats, short time at the airport prior to boarding, much like being in the waiting room of a bus or train station. We visited 4 or 5 of the islands by plane. Faial (Horta) is a stopping off island for yachts doing the transatlantic voyages, and for good luck the ‘sailors’ paint symbols on the harbour wall so you can see dates and where they have come from and going. There are about 9 islands and a couple of them are on a different continental plate from the others so they are gradually (very gradually!) moving away from the others. The fields look a bit like the Peak District in UK area as there are stone walls around them, and in summer they are covered with multi coloured hydrangeas. Look forward to seeing more videos. I suspect you will feel that you did not spend enough time on the Azores, as so much to see.
