Something that not many people know about Salamanca is that the 'Derecho de Gentes' (the precursor to International Law and the doctrine of Human Rights) was born there, along with modern Economic Science, among other things. A curiosity: Father Mariana, a professor in Salamanca, wrote a book in the 16th century titled 'De rege et regis institutione,' where, for the first time in history, he theoretically justifies tyrannicide, that is, the right to kill the king if his behavior is tyrannical. This is why _Marianne,_ the woman symbol of the French Republic, is named so, in his honor ('Marianne' being the female equivalent name in French to the Spanish''Mariana').

Lived and studied in Salamanca for almost 6 years, absolutely miss it already even though I left it about a month ago. Such a cozy yet active little city, so much history and so much beauty, it's just so fun. Can't deny I was checking the people walking on the background throughout the entire video to see if I recognised anybody, or even saw myself, but no luck. I'm actually pretty sure I was inside the building at 34:20 as you walked by, attending my friend's defence of his doctoral dissertation. Also, have to mention that after so many years people still use the clock as the default meet-up spot, and so did I during all those years, some things just never change I suppose. Also also, when you said you wanted a Spanish breakfast, my mind immediately went to Café Unamuno because it was one of my favourite spots te get breakfast when I lived there, and what are the chances that you ended up there! Salamanca is such a special place, glad you were able to experience it, and glad you brought me back with you, even though I just left it.

Great video , Steve! We were in Salamanca 2 years ago. Very sentimental for my husband, as it is the city of his beloved grandfather's birth. His grandfather lived with my husband's family as he grew up, speaking Castilian drinking his shot of sweet vermouth, and telling him stories of his boyhood in the streets of Salamanca. It truly is one of the most beautiful cities in Spain. Thank you for helping us re-live a sentimental visit.

I first discovered Salamanca in 2004 as the penultimate stop on a week long 'fly-drive' with Ryanair from Stansted to Valladolid (which also took in Santiago de Compostella). It was July and I stayed in a lovely hotel on the southern edge of the city centre near the river. It was also in the middle of a music festival and the memories of listening to a late-night open-air jazz concert in a square near the Cathedral will stay with me for ever. Fast forward to January 2023 and I was heading through Spain on a motorhome adventure to the south, and I decided to revisit Salamanca. Only difference was, it was a wet, gloomy, very cold Sunday afternoon! However it was still great to have made a return visit. I really enjoyed seeing some of the other parts of the city in your video from your past knowledge and explorations. One place I found that you didn't show was inside the old Cathedral, which has a stunning Apse, and also one of the oldest pipe organ cases in Europe (14th Century?) in a side Chapel. Great city, agreed, and I wouldn't turn down the opportunity for another visit in warmer conditions. |Many thanks for your video.
