A rail challenge brought me here, but I stuck around for a wander. In the morning I went up the mountain (previous video) and now I go for a walk along the Promenade to a spectacular castle on the lakeside. This town blew my mind, I hope you enjoy it too...

I don’t pretend to be a travel expert, but I love what I do and would be honoured if you came along with me. My channel focusses on the wide-eyed wonder and excitement of finding somewhere new, and my genuine reaction to it. You may not get a history lesson in my videos, but who knows, you might pick up some useful travel tips along the way, add a few destinations to your bucket list and hopefully be entertained by what you see. Thanks for watching, it means a lot to me :)
I do ALL of this myself. Planning, filming, editing, promoting, all with a weekly upload schedule, so please understand not every video will be an epic adventure. But my pledge is to always do my best in any situation and KEEP THE CAMERA ROLLING :)

FAQs:
WHERE ARE YOU FROM?
I was born in Glasgow but have lived in Carnoustie, Dalgety Bay, Stonehaven, Edinburgh, Montrose, and further afield (Salamanca, Spain & Devonport, New Zealand)
WHEN DO YOU UPLOAD?
Saturdays at 10am Scottish time. Occasionally a bonus midweek video will pop up (in which case, likely to be Tuesday at 5pm)
WHY IS THERE A DELAY BETWEEN TRIP AND VIDEO APPEARING?
This is both my business model and a result of doing everything myself. Editing takes time and I also like to schedule videos a bit in advance in case of any problems/illness/cancellations etc. Keeping my uploads appearing every Saturday is important to me, so I don’t want anything to get in the way of it. Also, I occasionally need some time off to recover from trips! But more than anything else, it's about budgets. I generally need to film a number of videos on each trip to break even. And each one of these take a while to fall into place on a Saturday morning.
WHAT EQUIPMENT DO YOU USE?
I film with a GoPro11 and my iPhone12. I edit on iMovie and use epidemicsound.com for music. I also use canva.com for thumbnails etc. I also have a DJI Pocket 3 (bigger sensor) for nighttime, although I’m still getting to grips with it.
WHY DON'T YOU SPEND LONGER AT DESTINATIONS?
The usual suspects I'm afraid - time and money! Hotels especially these days make my eyes water like a true Scotsman. Also my weekly upload schedule means I need to keep on the move.
WHERE'S ALICJA?
Alicja will feature whenever possible, but she has her own life and a proper job so it can take a while for our schedules to match up. Trust me though, I prefer it when She is there too!
DO YOU PAY FOR YOUR OWN TRAVEL?
Yes I do. I've only ever accepted a complementary ticket as compensation for a previous problem. All my opinions are frank and honest reflections of travel as I experience it.
WHY THE ADS?
It's my income, I can't do this for free. Notice I don’t have mid-roll ads though!
CAN I CONTACT YOU?
I used to list my email address but felt bad not having the capacity to respond to everything so took it down (and I got a LOT of spam so missed many genuine messages along the way).
HOW CAN I SUPPORT THE CHANNEL?
Watching my videos is of course support enough, but if you'd like to support further, I'll pop links in here for Paypal and Patreon. All kind donations are super-appreciated and will go 100% towards future filming trips.
DO YOU ACCEPT SPONSORSHIPS?
I don't like to upset the flow of my videos, so I don't even include mid-roll ads anymore (at significant loss of income to myself), so I prefer not to include sponsorships either. I'm open to a small slide at the start/end of each video, but I don't want to get into talking about products, it's something I don't like as a viewer myself (especially as a viewer who pays for KZbin Premium). So it's probably a polite no, although all of this goes out the window if you offer me something which can give me the chance to make a video for my audience that would otherwise be impossible.

My late wife and I met in Montreux, at the age of 15, 73 years ago. I have returned to Montreux on many occasions and have absorbed some of its soul. In the limited time you had available I feel you captured some of its spirit.. The wealth is adjacent to the lake. Elsewhere, there is the old town of Montreux and adjacent smaller towns/villages where the standard of living is comfortable but ordinary. Montreux has managed to avoid mass tourism. Switzerland has always seemed expensive to UK visitors, but it is partly our fault in deciding to become a poor country. Not all that long ago there were 5 swiss franks to the pound, more recently 2 franks and now almost parity

When in Switzerland last year I found the best option if you were staying in the same place for a time was to rent a holiday apartment in a small town outside the big city. Around £75 per night and it meant you could cook for yourself and not have to pay high prices to eat out. One good piece of advice I saw was don't buy the big brand chocolates, go for the supermarket brands, they cost much less and are just as good quality. Also if you are going to be using trains a lot then get a railpass, they cover the mainlines as well as cablecars, mountain railways and often lake cruises.

My gosh, Steve... so many happy memories of Montreux. I used to walk from the Chateau to Montreux and back for exercise and be passed by roller bladers by the dozen... As you witnessed the views are sublime, everything looks clean and tidy and well maintained - even the mountains! 😀😀 You are right about that steel building: at Christmas they put up tarpaulent type sheeting on the sides and have a Chistmas market in there but.... they also have numerous stalls alongside the lake selling just about everything. Wouldn't surprise me if there was a small stall with Rolls Royce sales people! Have been there at other times and heard bands - Swiss music bands playing inside - it's a great venue. Your video captured Montreux beautifully - most enjoyable: a big thank you! Keep up the good job. 👍👍

Thank you Steve for yet another wonderful video! Two tips from a regular visitor to Switzerland. The big Coop and Migros supermarkets often have self-service restaurants charging (relatively) reasonable prices. Secondly - fares. If you are doing a lot of travelling in Switzerland always buy a Swiss Travel Pass. This gives you free travel on all public transport (bus, train, tram, BOAT etc.) except lines which simply go up mountains. Eg, on the trip up the Rochers-de-Naye the STP gives free travel up to Caux Above Caux the STP holder gets a 50% discount. I regularly visit Switzerland travelling around on an STP. I seem to recall that a trip up to Rochers-de-Naye in 2019 cost me about 27 Franks.

Steve, having been to Switzerland many times, do as the Swiss do and go for picnics! Denner and CoOp supermarkets often have food and booze on Action = Offert! This comment reminded me the first time I visited Switzerland back in 2001 when I was backpacking with a college friend. It was my first trip abroad (we started from Riga, Latvia, went through Estonia, Finland, Denmark, Germany and then arrived in Switzerland where my friend had a friend). The difference between my own country and the post-Soviet background from which I came from and the picture-perfectness of Switzerland was almost too much, almost sickening (for lack of a better word) and occasionally I had those very strange thoughts that this place might do with a bit of... chaos and destruction to look more human.😅 Totally bonkers. I didn't do any harm to Switzerland though. Just the contrast was too much for me as an utterly inexperienced citizen of country that was at the time still very much devastated by the Soviet occupation.

Not cheap I agree, but when I stayed a couple of times in 2016 and 2018 it was do-able, though I admit I stayed mostly in self catering hostels in Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald, but worth it to be in so much natural beauty, the Silberhorn shining in the moonlight, the green glacial waters of Lake Brienz, picture postcard churches in lakeside villages... l seriously hope to be able to get back sometime.

@@Klemheist-vf1hx You are right about Seattle. When I was a kid Seattle was simply a garden city that was very clean. Changes in government planning and thinking have changed all that over the years. They seem to have an attitude about behaving the way they want in Seattle. The state government is in a shambles just like Oregon and California. I lived in LA California for 31 years and ran, not walked out of that state when I finally retired. Far left radical thinking has cost many people their livelihoods and retirement savings as well.

There's just something so alluring about strolling around a still turquoise lake with snow-capped peaks on a warm sunny day. Gorgeous.

Brings back lots of memories from our trip there. Was lucky enough to get in the castle where there is more to explore than you might think. Great destination. The goldenpass line goes high into the mountains where the lakes have an amazing water colour the higher you go.

Almost a copy cat of my walks around Montreux, you right, is very beautiful that promenade is like walking through the heavens gardens.

Your afternoon tour brought back wonderful memories for us of our time there at the end of a Swiss Rail Tour, it was our last night in Switzerland. Well done, as always another great video Steve!

Fortunately, Steve, I don't have to choose between Montrose and Montreux, but if I did have to, it would be Montrose in a heartbeat! 👍

What a fantastic place, no graffiti or litter, well maintained, no moored boats or cretins on jet skis cluttering the lake. At least they don't charge you to sit and take in the views. Another excellent video Steve 👍

There was a quite of lot of graffiti on the buildings. See the first part of the video. I was actually surprised by that.

What beautiful scenery. The area around the lake is so picturesque. I have to say though the prices in that supermarket were eye watering. I mean imagine charging nearly twenty Swiss francs just for ginger beer, thanks for the wonderful video as always Steve.

The significance of the artwork over the bed is probably that Freddie was heavily into Japanese paintings and drawings. Something I learnt when I went to the pre-auction exhibition of his stuff at Sotheby’s. Also discovered that he was cat mad but I guess everyone has their dark side 😃

I've been meaning to return to .ch for ages, but I don't want to go alone, and SWMBO would murder me if I did. The sights are delightful.

Fantastic Steve! My Mum worked in Vevey next to Montreux for Nestle in the 60s. We had a few holidays in Territet above Montreux in the 80s and this bought back so many memories. The view was stunning. One night i was watching a Thunderstorm in France across Lake Geneva. The Lighting was highlighting the Mountains. I used to watch the Trains snake through the side of the castle and my fascination with the rail operations ended up with me being a Driver (started on BR and currently now with XC)

I feel your pain for the cost of food. We were in Zurich for the day (to catch the Nightjet to Berlin). Dinner was fish and chips for the two of us at Nordsee - Can$64 (so 36 quid?) Oufff

Absolutely gorgeous. I don’t know if I could enjoy Montreux the way I’d like to because of the cost, though-a short stay maximum it would be. Can’t truthfully say “Nothing really matters-to me.” The cost does, the price of experiencing beauty.

I could not enjoy the UK where takeaway fish and chips cost £17 for one person. That was 5 weeks ago. Whereas Aldi and Lidl are everywhere (not Australia) and sell food at reasonable prices. In fact Lidl now have bakeries in store. I would use these stores for a couple of meals a day. Aldi Muesli €3.80 a bag, enough for 6 days, vs hotel breakfast at €35 a day. And I got food poisoning from the fish and chips, or the tartare sauce
