This is an excerpt from the "Steve Martin Live" VHS ( the majority of which was a stand-up routine at a large venue or arena in California from 1979). The VHS also contained "Homage to Steve" ( with Dave Letterman, Paul Simon, Henny Youngman and Alan King. In this segment, he four are all taking notes in a comedy Q&A with Steve ) and "The Absent Minded Waiter" ( a short film in which Steve is the worst waiter ever... my favorite short film of all time ). I WISH THEY WOULD RELEASE THIS ON DVD!!!!

I love how he not only plays teh banjo, but he is real good at it too! That timing is prefect.

Same, I just watched another video with him playing banjo with Earl Scruggs on Letterman. It took me a while to make the connection between Steve Martin of SNL and the Steve Martin who was playing some crazy banjo with some of the best bluegrass musicians in the world.

I used to have this show on VHS. I don't know if it can be bought today. I recorded it off Showtime twenty some odd years ago. Has all the classic Steve Routines. He cracks me up at the end of this clip when he does that spazz out thing lol... What a super talent "Mind if I smoke?" "No not at all. Mind if I fart?" hahaha Guy was just so unpredictable.

Mr Martin is the most complete artist I've ever seen!! Amazing. I would like to play the banjo as well as him. My father (rip) used to play guitar and banjo. Unfortunately I've never could play one single note!! Shame on me!! hahaha

@argybarg Yeah you are right about that... That style is distinctly southern though. I grew up in rural Alabama listening to the old timers pick like this and it always amazed me how they could play so fast

@argybarg I'm learning the Banjo at the moment, have had one for years, and I can honestly say it's completely because of Steve Martin that I'm doing it. You're right though, it's really lovely instrument and it's fun, it's not just something you see a hick or a hillbilly playing,

I agree. Rock n' Roll would not be Rock n' Roll if we did not look to the influences of the past. Rock n' Roll was born throughout the 19h century, in every the world traveler with a guitar or banjo in his hand, singing about his own experience. It was born in the slums of a growing American nation, in the blues of every poor man playing a six string. We can't forget the influences of both American and British bands of the 50's and 60's-Leadbelly, Robert Johnson, Pink Anderson, Floyd Council

No. The term "the blues" refers to the "the blue devils", meaning melancholy and sadness; an early use of the term in this sense is found in George Colman's one-act farce Blue Devils (1798). Bluegrass developed during the 1940s era, a mix of country, jazz, folk, and other popular genres at that time.
