Every tournament since 1990 can be traced to a manager showing fierce loyalty to players who didn't deserve to be starting whether on form, or fitness. It is an England "thing" to pick players that hinder the team because the Manager has a psychological need to surround themselves with loyalists: Kane, Maguire, Shaw, etc.

Anybody ever thought about benching Bellingham. Bring him in during the last 10 minutes of the game as that is when he only seems to affect the game, he is amazing at the end of the games but offers little to nothing during the first half and start of the second half.

I went back and watched the first third of the Switzerland game to see if this was just media or drama or not. Indeed, Kane is not moving very well. I think a competent manager would replace Kane. There are barely any of them at the elite level. Scoring goals, and consistently scoring goals, is far and away the most difficult skill in the sport. Although their play started to become pedestrian in the second half and changes were needed which Southgate made. My Free Watkins comment is the main thing I was saying…. I was right. Still felt Southgate left it a touch late for the substitute.
