You gotta respect a man who refuses to be inducted into the Rock-n-Roll Hall of Fame because they wouldn't induct his band.

@DavidSmith-ss1cg 4 жыл бұрын
Steve Miller remembers that the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is - like "Rolling Stone" magazine - the result of Jann Wenner's imagination - and ego. I admire him - and Eddie Vedder - for telling it like it is, right to their faces. I have to admit that Rolling Stone magazine has made a difference, a few times, but it(and it's influence) is overblown. And the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is a lot like the circus. Clowns, exotic animals, and freaks - and awards for non-musicians.

Uh...… forgive me if I missed the joke.... but you Know Steve Miller WAS inducted into the RnR HOF, right? I know, I was there (to see Cheap Trick get inducted really, Miller was a bonus). Yes, he gave them a raft of shit for being the pompous asses they are, but he showed up and accepted the induction. He was there, he performed.

about 20 years ago, he was doing this charity event in our city and he was playing in this banquet hall I am part of. he was doing sound check and they were jamming to fly like an eagle. we were trying to have a meeting but all you could here was the music and we went to go watch. It was amazing how effortlessly they play. Then Steve came into the bar area and sitting there having a few beers and we were giving him some Italian style spirits and he was having a good time. Like you said, he was one of he most ordinary guys there but super nice!

JET AIRLINER is NOT written by Steve Miller. Rather it was written by Mr Paul Pena. The checks from Steve to Paul over the years kept him alive according to the liner notes in Paul New Train album finally released in 2000. The Paul Pena version of JET AIRLINER is featured on this album. He also played it on this show which can be searched on KZbin. IMO Paul's is very much the superior version.

After watching this, I need to share my "Joker" story. My dad's best friend moved to Jackson Hole, WY from southern NJ in 1976. My mom and dad decided to drive out to see him in late May 1979. So off we went in my dad's 1978 Chevy pickup with a camper stuffed in the bed with the overhang over the roof. The youngest son, Quinn, and I, rode bicycles into town from his house. It was hot, so we went looking to get a drink. At 13 years old, we mistakenly ended up in a bar. The bartender said something like you can't drink beer here but you can have a soda. So we sat at the bar and guess what was blaring on the bar's speakers? The Joker by the Steve Miller Band. We thought we were so cool sitting in there for maybe 20 minutes. 40 years ago now and I will never forget that day.

_The word is probably a corruption of-or imagined variation on-the word "puppetutes", which was itself a coinage, originated by Vernon Green at the age of 14. Green included the word "puppetutes" in the lyrics of doo-wop song "The Letter" (1954), as performed by him and The Medallions. "The Letter" also included another original coinage, "pismotality". Presumably in homage to the Medallions' song, Steve Miller used the nonce words "epismetology" and "pompatus" in the lyrics of two of his other songs, "Enter Maurice" and "The Conversation", one of which is, like "The Letter", in spoken-word style._

Miller stole that line from another doowop song, "Lovey Dovey," which was a hit for The Clovers. The song's writer sued Miller, and because of that Miller has to share song writing credits and royalties for "The Joker" with the writer of "Lovey Dovey." As far as I know, Miller does NOT have to share royalties with the guy who came up with "pompitus of love," ho ho.

OK! I'm googling that song to find out what the word 'pompatus' really is since he misheard it.... I just did, and the song is full of nonsense words...The other two were:"pismotality" and "caremily" The singer has something of a Jamaican accent..

Such a likeable guy. I don't think anybody knew what the hell he was saying back then, or what the word meant. It didn't matter either, because he sang it convincingly, as if he knew precisely what he was talking about. And that is how a number one hit is born!

Steve Miller and Boz Scaggs were classmates together at the St. Marks School in Dallas. Both went on to form the Steve Miller Band. So many great songs from Steve Miller. His theme song will probably always be "The Joker" and his alias, Maurice. The 1976 album, FLY LIKE AN EAGLE is superb. We are all slipping, slipping into the future. Great interview.

that was nice and honest of Steve Miller to acknowledge that the word "popitutes" (however that's spelled) was taken from an old doowop song. The song he is referring to is called "The Letter" by The Medallions. In fact, the lead singer, Vernon Green, used two words in the song that were "made up" - "popitutes" and "pisbotality" search for the song on KZbin and take a listen!

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE the fact the Eminem let us know Steve Miller is alive in 2024!... And as Mitch Hedberg (R.I.P.) once said: "I think it's funny that the guy who sings 'The Joker' is named Steve Miller and the guy who sings 'Fly Like an Eagle' is also named Steve Miller. Man, fame is weird, 'cause now everyone knows who Steve Miller is, but they still don't know what he looks like. I want to be famous like Steve Miller, but I don't want anyone to recognize me." 😂
