The glove on Steve's right hand is due to an issue from playing for so many years. It had worn down to bone on bone and was very painful. In 2016 he is recovery from surgery and has a mobile "cast" that still allows him to play and looks a lot like what he is wearing now. But, he admitted in an interview that he had to change his picking technique due to the limitations of the cast. Considering all the work he has put in down through the years, this doesn't surprise me. One of the best and most prolific artists of our time.

So true I hear so many instrumental guitarist these days and none of them hold a candle to Steve Morse in terms of tone or harmonic understanding. Plus with an instrumental group like the dregs you had total musical integration violin keys. Bass. an awesome drummer and of course Steves virtuosic guitar playing. Yes Dave LaRue is awesome. You got to be good to hang with Morse. Once again a demonstration of tone and harmonic understanding So lacking in instrumental guitar music today.

Steve Morse studied in music school, which made his chord compositions and cadences sophisticated, complex. In some compositions there is a clear influence of Baroque music, especially by J. S. Bach. Steve's a master.

Steve is in his 60s and injuries mount up after shredding for over 50 years. He broke his left arm (affected the way he plays) and has a repetitive injury to his right wrist. Resulting in the loss of most of the cartilage in that wrist. He has had to change the way he plays and you can see, at this point, that he is learning how to play with a stiff wrist, as opposed to the anchored, wrist "rolling" action which gave him his blinding technical speed in his prime. Check out "Steve Morse Band - Live, 1990 Full Concert", or if you like Purple, "Deep Purple Live in Poland, 1996". To see vintage Morse, check out a 3 part series called "Odd Steve Morse Stuff", which goes way back to the early 80s with the Dregs. I saw the Dregs several times in the late 70s/early 80s era and it changed my taste in music. Steve is one of only 3 guitarists to be named "Overall Guitarist of The Year" 5 years in a row - retiring him from the competition and putting him into the Gallery of Greats. The other 2 are Steve Howe (YES) and Eric Johnson. Steve attended the U Miami School of Music where, among other things, he studied classical guitar. Check out "Steve Morse Solo Acoustic - 9/26/90". It was the place to be back in the early to mid 70s for musicians and besides some of his future Dregs band members, a couple of his classmates were Jaco Pastorius, Bruce Hornsby and Pat Metheney. Not a bad class.
