Steve Smith: Paradiddle Johnnie at 105 BPM

Steve Smith

3 жыл бұрын

Steve performs "Paradiddle Johnnie" at 105 BPM. Incorporate some improvisation using material from the piece or inspired by the piece. Also, be conscious of where the tips of your sticks are touching your pad or snare head. Listen for consistency and tone from your pad or snare. And SWING the 16th notes!

I've been playing 50 years or so. If I ever feel cocky, stopping to watch players like Steve and Peter Erskine totally humbles me and cuts me down to size.

When I started drum lessons and told the teacher I only wanted to play rock, he said you gotta learn the snare first! And assigned me lessons like this. I thought it was dumb, because those aren't drum parts in any rock song, but later realized it's about mastery of the sticks and fine touch, which of course applies to all the drums and cymbals. You really do have to start with this kind of stuff.

All about practice just stick with R L R R L R L L and you can add accents later, it is more important to get the notes even. If it starts to become more of a buzz you are losing control. Don’t worry about it though this stuff takes years. My teacher urged me to play in front of a mirror as keeps everything even.
