Steve Vai is a graduate of Berklee in Boston, MA. Besides being a superior guitarist, he is well spoken and articulate.

he is so genuine that once he starts talking you are instantly drawn to him. A true genius and one of the greatest guitar players in history-easily top 10 and his humility affirms that. He is beyond a virtuoso..

Hey Steve! I'm an old guy, 56. I started playing when I was 5. The guitar has been my best friend for all these years and I couldn't agree with you more. Everything we play, whether it's a musical instrument or a paint brush or a wrench should reflect who "we" are. I thank you for taking the time to relate this to young players, many of whom seem to want to be "just like that guy" in order to "get somewhere". There is only one "somewhere" and only one "guy" (or girl of course). It's the person who let's whatever it is, come out. If you are obessed and can't stop..You're there. I wanted to make sure to thank you for the wonderful music you've created over the years, I actually BUY your records, by the way. Ray Friday.

Have known "of" Vai for a while but this gives me all I need to "know" him. A great guy and Guitarist. Any one who doesn't "push" their ideas on others and tells you money isn't true success and that its the excitement you feel in what you do as "you" that is success.....has to be the real deal! He took me on a journey from my past as a young kid starting out on guitar and my experiences all the way to the present. He speaks clearly and concisely on the thoughts and feeling concerning us as guitarists. His particular style is not necessarily my cup of tea but it is interesting and awesome in its own right. But what he has said right here speaks volumes past how well or what in particular (as far as genre) that he plays. Its who he is...and as he said that is what matters....... and who he "is" will attract like minded people! Really helpful and "inspiring" talk....I can't say enough good things about it. Thanks Steve.

So 1 hour ago I posted "For the Love of God" on facebook, and i added this comment:"This man, and Joe Satriani are the reasons i stopped playing guitar years back, knowing I could never reach their level lol" And then i continued my travel through videos i had not seen or heard before, stumbled on the 40min Jam at Vai's studio, and ended up now halfway through listening to this one, I realized so many similarities between Vai and me, except that I "gave up" on guitar once I heard all these awesome guitarists being better than me. (Must add I cut some tendons in my left hand when i was 7 years old and will never be able to truly shred or play on this level). Realizing though through listening to Steve in this video that maybe I shouldn't have given up back then and instead have just "settled" for a genre and style that fitted me. I still play, but only at home and almost never with an audience. I played drums in two bands some years ago, which is easier for me with my "handicap" left hand. I have the deepest respect for Vai, for being so humble about being what he is, a true Guitar God of our time.

Pick up a left-handed guitar then. As long as your left hand can still hold a pick and your wrist moves, it should work out. I spent years developing my playing. Then, I broke my left ring finger. It grew together in a weird way, blocks my other fingers and is now unable to do many of the things it is supposed to do. It frustrated me so much that I sold all of my gear. After a few years, I started to miss the guitar more and more. I occasionally played some piano (my 2. instrument) but it never gave me the same kind of joy the guitar did. I only learned it to assist my writing in the first place. Then I was enlightened. Simply go and get a left-handed guitar and start from the beginning. It took me more than 5 years of diligent practice to play things like ''blue'' by Yngwie with my left hand. Currently, it seems like my right hand won't even take half of the time. :)

Wow! What Steve Vai was speaking of, can be applied toward every day life, not just toward an instrument. He provided a very genuine, well explained view to specific experiences that can either hinder us, or excel us. I find what he has explained to be absolutely invaluable. Awesome, awesome, information. It is reassuring. Thanks for the upload.

I agree so much. He has a way to choose the good words to explain all those complex reflexion in such a clear way. In this video and the ''Happy in deep depression'', he shares with everybody the road to peace and happiness. He sure did alot of meditation because he found what I believe is the ''truth''. Everybody should be glad he shares all that with us as much as possible so more people here him. We should put the highlights as commercials on tv.

"Find your note..." Such valuable advice, insight and encouragement from Mr. Vai. There are many points he mentioned that I relate to but in particular: hearing him say that he never thought he was 'any good' humbles me so much and also helps me to keep that same mindset because, it serves to keep you progressing while finding real joy in what you play. That alone is encouraging because to my ears he is BRILLIANT, absolutely brilliant. His comments about level of fear vs level of confidence is eye opening too. Thanks Mr. Vai. Guitar

This must be the most relaxed Vai I have ever seen. I'm sure most watching, admire or enjoy to some degree, the music Steve has created or been involved in. Looking forward to more of you own brand of good stuff !

I keep coming back to this video. It's cool to hear him go beyond just "guitar talk" and expand in areas of LOA (Law of Attraction) I know Will Smith also talks openly about universal laws as well. Regardless if it's material or inner success, people that have obtained it, bring these concepts up for a reason. Very powerful to me both as a musician and Motivational speaker.

Thanks for this. I've been following a path just like whats being described here, but it wasn't so clear to me until hearing this. 2 years ago I found my private enthusiastic space...for me it was learning theory... getting a handle on a lot of random idea's about music. It wasn't easy but by listening to my quiet voice I got the proper coaching...a big deal for me was "Baby Step's" I wouldn't allow myself to sleep until I had a new baby step for the day. Even if it was trivial... I had to be sure I was falling asleep mulling over a new concept.. ramming my head against the 'new wall'.. I've come along way, and have learned to love 'the path' and the cool marker's along the way... For today it is being aware of where I am.. Knowledge wise, I'm at the tipping point. I'm over my worries that I'll get with some peep's and wont know what their talking about. Key changes? Altered Chord's?, no problem.. Now, technique and tone need to be raised up a few bars.

I have been listening to Vai since Passion and Warfare and find it amazing to see how much similarity there is between his words and his music. It's trivial if you consider he's the same person, but then, how many people are just playing notes or saying words without content? To me Vai and Hendrix are the greatest guitar players and will be listened to long after this Earthy Experience.

He is actually right :D.... I wanted to be an national champion at sharpshooting, done that, and i was content with myself, even though most of the people in my gang were against me spending a heap and loosing my time to what i thought it was worthwhile ;).....Did that in martial arts too..... Enough examples, I haven't gotten much out of my accomplishments, except the utter satisfaction of doing something that you love..... Enough of that, now I'm trying to learn to play the guitar (witch was a life long dream of mine, that I was afraid of doing), and if you enjoy it you're going to get more out of it then a gig or money (the goosebumps that come when you actually play something that relates to you, and that you play with so much dedication).....That can't be shown in money ;)....

For me I like instrumental rock and ballade, however a lot of people says that instrumental can't earn you much money because majority of the people like something with singing. So I said how do you explain people like steve vai, they say because he played in bands with singing like whitesnake , Alcatrazz, etc, that's where he got his name to be famous so that's where he build his fan base and then he can do instrumentals. Marty friedman said in 1 of his interview not to do instrumental also , he said it's a dead end because of the limited amount of listeners. So now who's advice is better? steve or marty? but end of the day I just love to play instrumentals

ING: The great thing is that Iit doesnt need be successful to understand what you say, all starts when you find a means of expression and believe in, like guitar, enjoy it, be humble. You are a great inspiration, I do not seek to be better than you, a greate between guitarists, not need to look for, Steve, with your experience, what you say is what everyone should do in their entire lives. IMO some thoughts of Steve are more general, eg. about enthusiasm, than addressed only to guitarists or musicians. I think what he said it is also true for some special "professions", especially scientists for example and other "professions" requiring not only talent, predispositions but also enthusiasm, being in fact kind of activity rather than usual "profession" often for whole life.

He clearly reads his eastern philosophy and is into meditation. Its very good advice and we can all come to these realizations within ourselves but actually applying them to our real lives is a challenge to the extreme. Maybe not so much with guitar, because you either already have the natural skill to be original, or you have been consumed by the world around u ur whole life and you naturally copy to get better. But even if you are naturally not sheep like and you follow ur highest excitement you can still end up consumed and trapped by life.
