It's nothing like Vai's version at all. He's lacking a ton of vibrato and expression and has no feel for the timing of notes either. He seems to have mistaken a half-arsed attempt to copy Vai's facial expressions and theatrics for feel. He should focus on making his playing expressive instead. Especially at the start of the piece. It's nearly as a bad as the midi versions at songsterr in parts (and I wonder if that's where he learned it?)As ever in these things too by focusing entirely on the lead and melody and just playing over a backing the copycat guitarists always miss the point. Steve Vai wrote a complete piece of music. It'd be more impressive if one of these buffoons that buys a Jem and butchers Vai pieces actually studied the other parts instead of just playing the lead part poorly. They might even create something of their own worth listening to.

@@weekendmagus9994 Which version? The guy has spent over 3 decades more or less touring entirely based on this one piece (perhaps a couple of others) If you search for 'Jem' you'll find a lot. It's the tragedy of owning one really. It's kind of sad enough that Vai is still playing this track, let alone myriad people doing a poor impression. Not the least that Vai is trapped emulating his past self for the same reason some are wowed here. At least Vai has a gig now with Belew that might be worth a listen. The question is, do you think Vai will play a Jem or buy a Gold Fernandez les paul and try to ape Fripp by sitting at the back of the stage in a waistcoat?

This is good. But, I don't feel the same "Steve Vai" as I did with your "K'm Pee Du Wee" cover. I wonder if you could comment on that. This is not a criticism of your playing - it's spot on. But, the soul of Vai you literally exude on "Juice" and "K'm Pee Du Wee" does not seem to be here. This is pretty much note-for-note, so congrats on that. I do hope you'll comment. Thanks! EDIT: From 3:00 on, you really hit it nicely. That solo section came alive. Great job. ANOTHER EDIT: As the song closes it feels more natural. More "Vai..."

What string gauge do you use

Generally 10 gauge, but I used 9’s for the Bad Horsie cover because it tightened up the low end a bit more with the low tuning.

That’s a great idea. I’ll look into that. Maybe I’ll try a two camera setup as well. :) still working through physical therapy from a car accident to be able to play guitar enough again to make these videos, but I’ll keep it in mind for when I’m back at it! (Hopefully soon)
