I'm probably gonna tell you things that you already know, but let me share what I know. The bass is standard tuned but fretless for the two upper strings only. The middle "regular" neck has seven strings, tuned down to A, where he picks up some of the deep bass-sounding notes. The upper part is a citar-ish thing, fretted up to maybe the 12th fret. Then there's a harp thingy tuned in a relevant chord, placed on the back. There are loads of buttons, some for functionality, some for gimmicks, and some for show. One of the buttons (swithes) actually starts the thundery intro when Vai plays this thing live. It's all controlled by an Ethernet cable that can carry both data and sound, being 4-split and going into relevant amps. There's probably a lot more to it, but I believe that this is the gist of it. He recorded all parts separately, but not without the intention of playing the piece live someday. Good luck, gentlemen

Steve does actually play this guitar, and has it on tour with him, but alas, not when I saw him a year ago.
