Haven't some across too many interviews with Steve Walsh.Found this on a hard drive ready to crap out on me so I figured Id upload it to perverse the life a little more. I can't remember what year it was I'm thinking 2000 something just not sure. It cuts off at 45 mins but I'm sure it was toward the end as they were BS'ing about favorite movies at that point. It's still a very cool convo with one of Rocks all time greatest.

STEVE WALSH IS WITHOUT A DOUBT THE FINEST VOCALIST I EVER HEARD !!! If you go back and listen to his full body of works from the band KANSAS you will realize what a GENIUS he was! In his later years with Kansas his voice had been pushed to the point where you could tell it was not easy for him to sing all the songs anymore..but all vocalist go through that . THANK GOD FOR STEVE WALSH AND HIS AWESOME TALENT !!

100% absolutely ! Steve Walsh was my childhood hero.My friends liked Robert Plant, and they REALLY busted my nads for liking a band with a violin in it. Anyway, your right.IMO KANSAS is thee best band in the world. I don't care what anybody says about the Beatles or Led Zeppelin Kansas is superior.

+pug760 totally agree, exceptional singer, his range is way beyond anybody else out there, and he actually sings real songs, not the usual metall crap that still grabs all the attention, Kansas are more of a pnenomena than just a rock band, pure talent, maybe the best rock band ever, soooooo true

A great mixture of Mozart and rock EVER. He is a real national treasure, there will never be another one like him. He was probably the first to combine Classic music with rock. Before my dad ruined my voice forever, I used to try to pattern my voice like him and Anne Wilson, and a little Karen Carpenter. That all ended when I left a coke bottle in the basement.

The real magic happens when you pair a genius lyricist with a genius vocalist. That's when a Kansas happens. Kerry and Steve together were greater than the sum of their parts, and individually they were astounding.

You're absolutely right... KANSAS was the combination of Livegren's amazing songwriting and Steve's amazing vocals... and don't discount Robbie Steinhart's rock violin and his rough, rock voice that melded together perfectly. I don't want to discount the excellent songs that Steve Walsh brought to those albums... KANSAS wasn't any one thing, it was a combination of all these elements... The newest incarnation of KANSAS is a great band, but they're not KANSAS. Of course they have the legal right to use the name, but they're hiring out the writing of lyrics, they don't have Kerry Livegren, Steve Walsh, or Robbie Steinhart, which means they're not KANSAS. A great band for sure, but not KANSAS. I don't want to see them live with Ronnie Platte as their vocalist. He's a decent vocalist, but sounds nothing like Steve Walsh, and seriously doesn't have the vocal range to sing those classic KANSAS songs. Ronnie Platte

This interview was done 18 years ago. He was 50. This is a fantastic artifact. Hearing Steve speak so uninhibitedly and candidly about his past is quite refreshing. I think his memories of Kansas are extremely key to understanding the band. I find him to be a pretty complex guy.

I'll never forget Fall '76, walked down my dorm floor hallway, and a fellow 'Bong Squad' member says, "Hey, wanna hear the new Kansas?" "Sure", had heard their earlier 3 albums on WXRT, so I walk in and sit dead center of his two huge JBL 15" monitor-class speakers, and he drops the needle... CARRY ON MY WAYWARD SON... The hair stands up on my neck... Then "The Wall". Unbelievable. God Bless Steve, Kerry, and all of them.

I bought Steve's old Hammond C-3 from their road manager, Clay Schell, in Atlanta Ga, back in the late 70's, and was hoping to meet him, but unfortunately I didn't get to. I tried again at a concert at Clemson University a few months later, but again, was unable to connect with him. I did however, get to speak, briefly, with Dave Hope and the others at the bus after the concert, and found them all to be very down to earth and approachable, but again....no Steve. So, I marked it up to fate and moved on. KANSAS will always be at the top of my short list of all time best progressive Rock and Roll bands, and I wish them continued and lasting success in whatever the they choose to do! 🤘✌

Dig Walsh's beard - he's a low-key, cool dude, who was Huge for 10 years, then faded somewhat, and you can feel the chip on his shoulder, but he's so down-to-Earth, he mellowed, and has settled into his life. Not as big an egomaniac as Keith Emerson, let's pray he doesn't do the same thing Emo did (that asshole!). Steve was such an accomplished singer/ keyboardist (very under-rated)! This is a band that I like. The singer was awesome on the first early shows. I got influenced by his soulful singing. I never had the chance to go see them in a live concert until one day in medford, Oregon I got the chance, plus I got to meet Steve. I do not know what mood he was but he was such an asshole to me and too other people. I watched the show for 5 min and I left. It was a shitty show as the original members were not there. It left a bad taste on me. Still, his singing is great and I still think Steve is one of the greatest singer of the classic rock band Kansas. Honestly.

I'm surprised he doesn't like "People of the South Wind"? I love that song. But I totally agree with him on On the Other Side and Reason to Be. Both Masterfully written.

Two singers I dream might ever turn to teaching vocals are Steve and Lou Gramm. Man they set the bar so high. Both have that souful intensity.

I went to college in St. Joseph, Missouri in the 70s, where Steve grew up. I think I read somewhere he sang in a Catholic choir as a teenager. Missouri is a 21 state for liquor, and at that time you could cross the Missouri river into Kansas and get 3.2 beer if you were 18 or older. There was a bar in Wathena KS which served Coors at 35 cents per draw where a band called USA played often. Once in a blue moon, Steve Walsh would show up and play keyboards with them. He didn't sing, he just played keyboards. He did this at least until Leftoverture was released, and then I think he may have moved to Atanta. I don't know his connection with the band USA, but maybe they were from his White Clover days. Just guessing.

Remember Walsh at a club in St Louis called Mississippi Nights. He said " Leftoverture was so good I bought the album "

The thing I love about all the Kansas members, is they didn't change, the stayed themselves. The didn't attach each other when tension was in the band, they disagreed, yet respected each other.

Read Kerry Livgren's book "Seeds of Change" to find out about the real driving force behind Kansas. Walsh's voice was incredible, but the depth of the band was Livgren's lyrics & their overall musicality
