The end of an era Janey. The man was my absolute hero, the reason I did hospital and local radio. Inspirational, inventive and the finest broadcaster of my generation. We campaigned for almost 2 years to get SWITA back via social media. But without success. Steve’s legacy and gift to us is a friendship group and everlasting memories of (in my opinion) the best radio presenter that I’ve ever heard. An absolute tragedy that we’ve lost this genius so early. The world of radio without Steve Wright is a very, very empty place. RIP DJ Silliyboi 🖤

I couldn’t agree more, Steve was in a league of his own. That humour, that voice, the seemingly effortless way he made me laugh and smile across four decades. I’m a grown man, but here we are now and that very same voice makes me cry, such is his power. Nobody else could ever come close, I truly hope he knew just how much he was loved.

I'm devastated, I didn't know Steve but felt like I did for 40 years on radio 1 and 2 , I loved what he did and keep thinking if he had still been doing the afternoon show he may have been ill in radio 2 and got help quickly but I think he was on his own at home . We'll never know I suppose . I'm a Steve as well . Love you mate .

Janey Lee Grace and you're colleague Tim Smith on the 'big show' on BBC radio 2 between 2 and 5 pm. The old woman and Barry from Watford 24 years and before that on radio 1. In the 1980s Zoo radio Mr. Angry. Radio 2 will never be the same again. Why does the BBC want to destroy a giant a talent of radio. When I heard of the sad news about Steve Wright and especially when I heard the theme associated with his show i don't mind telling you that I just burst into tears because I miss Steve Wright. I didn't know him at all but for 44 years on BBC radio 1 and radio 2 as well as BBC top of the pops he was my friend and kept me company day after day including his Sunday love songs on radio 2 on Sunday mornings. Steve Wright Rest In Peace. Sorely missed deeply appreciated thank you Steve for all the years of pleasure and happiness love and compassion through laughter 💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏📻🎙🎧 so sorry for your loss Janey Lee Grace and Tim Smith. ❤❤❤❤🫂🫂🫂🫂🫂🫂🫂🫂🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗

Lovely tribute. I'm a 50 year old bloke from Durham - I've been really saddened by Steve's death. He was the voice of my lifetime. He was with me all through my exams at school & all those hours spent on the UK's roads as an adult. RIP Wrighty - I'll miss your voice and that huge personality.

The show wasn’t axed, only Steve was. An afternoon show carried on and that’s why I don’t listen to it…….or to any BBC radio anymore. Sadly, life will never be the same again, but I’ll always have the wonderful happy memories of waiting for his show to start and then enjoying it with all the lovely girls in our office until I retired in 2006. As I’ve already said in a different post, the melancholy of his play out music on a Friday was simply because we had to wait until Monday to hear him and the posse again. The saddest thing is he’ll never know this now and just how genius he was and how much he was loved. RIP Steve.

This was a show which was on for 3 whole hours and it was go, go, go with Steve and his brilliant non stop banter for over 20 years! I honestly missed him so much in those early days of being axed. I feel for all of you who knew him personally, my heart breaks. I could go on and on but Janey, I wish I lived in London to attend his funeral and show my last respects to him. End of an era for me, 40 years + I listened to Steve, as a lorry driver we did thousands of mile together, Steve's show was always the highlight of my day didn't matter if I was having a bad day or not, soon as I heard his jingle and those 5 words ' Steve Wright now playing everywhere ' my mood changing in an instant, just so uplifting and pure quality entertainment not to mention yours and Tim's contributions, of course. Nobody has ever or will ever come close to Steve. Right or wrong but I blame Helen Thomas and the BBC for dropping him like a stone, in his interview about the show ending he tries to be polite and composed but you can see in his face he's upset. I haven't listened to BBC radio since his last show and I won't listen to BBC ever again. I miss you guys and truly miss Steve I genuinely do feel like I have lost a member of my own family, though I suppose you could say that is Steve's legacy, because so many of us miss him. 🥲🥲🥲

I was always hoping that the big show would return in its original format on Virgin radio or Greatest Hits radio but it was never to be. Steve was unique and will be sorely missed, he was our friend. I was sad to hear about the death of Steve Wright. I remember first listening to him as a child when my Mother had the radio in the kitchen & then 10 years later laughing at him...... I once remember him saying " I bet Ampere got a right belt" one of those things that sticks in my mind & still makes me laugh. Also interesting hearing about your experience with Alcohol & have also been there myself. I learned several techniques that worked for me... completely change my routine & habits is key. Journaling works & there's something about putting pen to paper & focusing on objectives but making sure I outline them. Alcohol is socially acceptable & so easily accessible we can tend to forget once it gets a grip its so easy to head into a downward spiral. Good luck to you & all the best..

I stopped drinking Saturday evening of my lifetime’s week and it’s now Sunday morning, or to put it another way I’m about 3 years older than Steve. After 30+ years of drinking almost every evening it was time to stop. I still miss the fuzzy relaxing feeling of the first drink after work but now I’m retired I’m more relaxed anyway. When I heard of his passing my first thoughts were of you and Tim and how you must be feeling and today KZbin pointed me to your channel which is new to me. I hope you realise just how much Steve Wright in the Afternoon meant to so many of us, not just him but all of you, his posse. Just like Terry Wogan’s show in the morning and Simon Mayo’s teatime show, you made us all feel part of your family. Sadly the powers that be at BBC Radio seem to have lost touch with what it’s Radio 2 listeners want and often need. Once Steve’s show was axed I stopped tuning in to Radio 2 completely. And My friends are the same. As sad as it is I am grateful though for the years of love and laughter that Steve and the others have given to me and so many others. My thoughts are with Steve’s family and to you and the rest of his posse. Bless you all.

Hi Janey, thanks for your heartfelt tribute to Steve…..my sincere condolences for your loss, and the loss of all who loved him. Also, very interesting podcast about alcohol, and thankfully I can take it or leave it , but also very poignant analogy about the decades of your life and the days of the week……found that to be very profound and sobering. 😂 I am still processing the loss of Wrighty, and the last time I felt so bereft for a person that I loved , and never met , was George Michael. Both these guys gave me such pleasure through their respective talents, and both have left this world ,far too early . How sad it must be for you to have known them both these lovely guys, and now have had to mourn both their passing? ( So sorry for you Janey!😢) I’m sure that both would appreciate all the heartfelt prayers and condolences, but ultimately as they both loved life, would not want us to be sad for too long? Especially if your on Saturday or Sunday of your 4 score years and 10? Two hugely talented and wonderful men, who will leave a vacuum in millions of hearts. RIP to both and love to their respective families! ❤️.

I think this feels worse than others because he did have a unique talent of connecting with his audience one on one. Also knowing the greatest presenter the UK has ever seen had his show dumped while it was still in its prime. Wrighty still had so much to offer. Some said he had become stale. I don't agree. He had become familiar. More familiar than anyone else. I loved the way he sang over the music. Just demonstrated his confidence and understanding of what feeling he was creating. The world doesn't seem right without Steve in it. Loved the show.

I strayed onto this video due to the Steve Wright tribute title, but also found the alcohol free subject interesting, even though I never acquired the taste for alcohol (or cigarettes) - my sister, on the other hand who had the same upbringing as me smokes and drinks like a trooper. Work that one out! Anyway it was nice to hear and see your great affection for Wrighty. I really can't imagine another DJ dying and getting the same level of attention and love from the public at large. He really was one of a kind.

A lovely tribute to Steve Janey.Between the show ending and Steve's passing i have missed not hearing the show in the afternoon's.I loved the banter between the 3 of you.Would be nice if some of the shows could be heard on BBC sounds. One regret I have is never contacting any of Steve's shows.

Lovely tribute Janey well done ❤ Really sad that Steve has passed and that we will no longer get to hear this awesome guy on the airwaves again. Steve, was truly a professional and was a master at his craft. He brought so much joy, laughter and happiness to all his listeners. When you tuned into his shows you always knew you were in good company. Thank you Steve and god bless you always ❤

Thanks Janey it seems Steve is still giving as he has led me to you. Loved listening to Steve and indeed yourself and he was more than a DJ but rather an entertainer. Thankfully I have had my three score years and ten plus three but I still want more. Being the child of alcoholics , but they would never admit to it , my sisters and myself saw just how it affects the family. It got worse when one died age 16 in a car crash so I decided to stop drinking in my 30s. Over the years its cost me friends because I was perceived as being boring but what the heck I have gained more than I lost. So my message to youngsters who are thinking of giving up alcohol is do it today as you have much to gain from doing so. Best I don't prattle so I will just say you have a new sub as I am just someone who cares for and learns from other people.

A fan of Steve & the team from the mid '80's, a constant throughout my life. Had a tough time in the last couple of years at school and often used to escape by taking long walks with the 'afternoon show' for company, he really helped me through. I left the UK to live in Hong Kong in the early 90's but would make an effort to tune in whenever visiting UK then was delighted when the show went online listening here into the late evenings, it was a comforting nostalgic link whilst away from the UK and guaranteed would always lift my mood. Was gutted when the show ended as were many then whilst on a rare visit to the UK last week the news dropped of Steve's passing. RIP Wrighty....

Maybe you and Tim should’ve done Sunday love songs, or maybe you could carry it on in Steve’s memory. We’d all love that. Death is a horrible experience for us all, and is never easy whether is sudden or expected. Sending big love to you all.

Thank you Janey for a brilliant podcast!❤ I miss the possie on the radio, and Like so many of my radio heroes, Steve was another presenter who inspired me to do radio as well! On the subject of grief, I was studying for a music degree at Resonance, when in my first year my dad passed away, only to be followed by mom in the second year. Grief is massive, and alcohol isn’t the answer. Thankfully, I’m not a drinker, so had counselling at university, which I strongly recommend! If gave me great strength, focussing my attention of my parents being behind me 100% with the course, and my Christian faith helped me to press on, knowing I had friends praying for me! Thanks again for sharing this special memory and podcast, it will help so many people move forward beyond the pain of the battle they may have too! God bless, and keep up the great work!❤

For some reason, your video came up in my stream, and I'm glad it did. I never was a big drinker and just stopped some years back but I just wanted to say how much I enjoyed listening to you, Steve and Tim in the afternoon, I don't listen to radio anymore. I'll be 58 this year and nearly lost my life to Illness twice in the past and always say. Live life at full throttle and hang on for the ride. Hearing Steve's passing hit me like a sledgehammer, so we are retiring by the end of this year. It will take until then to organise everything, I've set the ball rolling and can't stop it now. No procrastinating it's happening.

I always used to listen to Steve on BBC Radio 2 when at work in the Forces. We always listened. I remember him at the Radio 1 Road Shows. Later on Radio 2, I loved his banter with Joyce Frost, known as ´the Old Woman´ I also did some radio and he was inspirational. As for the drink. It is hard. I stopped smoking in 2014. Stopped immediately. It is a hard journey. Moreover when living abroad as I do now where wine is cheaper than a bottler of cola..

Wow, just so much to express, to explain I don't know where to start Janey! Firstly your voice because I have never seen you, photos , media never ever put you and Steve and Tim in the physical reality of my life! Difficult to explain it really; for so long you were all daily companions of my daily routine! Working, driving long journeys in my office, just part of the furniture of my mind. Busy getting on with life not realising that I was on the Sunday of this unknown calendar, this thing that I /we just took for granted not realising how important it all is! And now I see you on KZbin chatting about the wine witch, I can't tell you how much I relate to all that you have gone through! It is tough to accept things that we have no power to change, it makes it easy to let the wine witch drive! Thank you for your open and honest emotions and of course for sharing your memories of the GOAT of radio, Mr Steve Wright!! ❤

I thought of you and Tim when I heard the news, and thought if I was so heartbroken what must you be, his friends and colleagues. So sorry, Janey. I find it very symbolic that Radio 2 has left Wogan House, Steve's studio locked away, end of an era. Maybe the new broadcasting house could be named Wright house in his honour?

With the loss of Steve (and Ken) from Radio 2, we are left with purely moronic, woke presenters and over 1 million have switched off. They moved Sounds of the 60s to 6.00 a.m. from 8.00 a.m. and so all of those who have depended on the radio over the years are relegated to the dustbin. Steve was a fantastic presenter with such a different type of show and you Janey, Tim and the rest of the crew kept us all going when we needed it. God bless you all. The only day worth listening now is Sunday. Off with their heads these idiots who are supposed to be programmers.
