What is ETIAS?
ETIAS stands for European Travel Information and Authorisation System. It is based on a similar visa waiver system used by the United States called the ESTA, and the eTA systems used by Canada and Australia. The ETIAS was originally proposed in 2016. The development of the system was speeded up because of terrorist attacks in France and Belgium and the need for improved security measures for entering the region, which includes the Schengen countries, as well as those of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) and European microstates with open borders. The purpose of the system is to gather information on travellers who currently are travelling visa-free to the European Union and ensure individuals posing security concerns are identified before they are permitted travel to Schengen countries. The main goal for the E.U. is to improve the external and internal security of E.U. citizens by having a centralised system to issue travel authorisations to E.U. visitors and monitor their travels within the Schengen zone.

Before the ETIAS is enabled, the Entry/Exit System, EES needs to be up and running. The EES digitizes the check a border official does on entry when stamping your passport. The EES checks if an ETIAS approval is needed and applied and issues a digital "stamp". They will also perform biometric screening at the border as you were saying at the end of the video.

Too work properly the EES has to work. We'll have to wait and see how it pans out.

@@SteveandAnitainMallorca It's basically a given that EES won't be rolled out till after the paris olympics next year as the EU is terrified of it causing disruption to such a high profile event. Had seen it sugested ETIAS would nonetheless be started early next year and could be done even with a deferred EES implementation, so who knows.

It’s necessary to mention also EES (Entry / Exit System) because ETIAS is dependent on it. EES will be the system keeping electronic records of entry into and exit from Shengen and involve collection of biometric data. There is so far no firm start date even for EES and the necessary border infrastructure is still not in place everywhere. So the ETIAS start date is even more vague as it will have to come some months after EES. It seems now more likely that EES will start sometime in 2024 and ETIAS itself not until 2025. In any case EES is what people will notice first as requiring biometric data collection on their first Shengen entry thereafter. EES E-Gates will replace passport stamping from then on.

I don't know how far other airports have got with this, but Palma seems to have it in place already. Passports are scanned and photos are taken. Not sure how they are going to do the fingerprints. Dates for the introduction for both are vague or non-existent, but the ETIAS has 2024 mentioned. The EU website says that border guards will check them. I guess we will have to wait and see. If you come across any more information about this please let me know, and thank you very much for your input.

The hotel prices in Palma Nova this year were hundreds of pounds more expensive than previously. I have stayed in Majorca. many times, but it is no longer value for money. The drinks were too expensive and not good quality. Time for a change, nothing to do with new rules.

Steve, any clarity for people in Northern Ireland who can hold both British and Irish passports? Obviously we're permanent UK resident's, but it would be open to interpretation that you have access to Schengen by way of an Irish passport? Just would be nice if someone at this stage could clarify or chime in on that, because so far the whole thing is still sorely lacking in detail and we're none the wiser which way it will apply to us in that scenario.

If you have an Irish passport, the suggestion is that you should use it. That way you will avoid all of the 3rd country rules. There is still no date for the introduction of ETIAS and soome say it can't happen until the electronic entry system is in place throughout the EU.

Irish citizens will not need to use the ETIAS system to travel to participating countries. The same rules around free movement within the EU/EEA will still apply. To note, as is currently the case for the Schengen area, an Irish citizen will still need to travel using a valid passport and will go through border control on arrival in one of these countries. The last time I was in Majorca, at the Santa Lucia hotel, the management had to lock the side door from the pool to the street because they were being targeted by locals. They were stealing tourist's belongings from around the pool. Not much sign of police in Palm Nova.

It was a thought with Brexit, but under the withdrawal agreement we haven't lost any rights. The ETIAS doesn't apply to us.

You & I are in similar situations (GB passports with resident's permit for an EU country). So lets suppose we re-enter the EU from UK or USA but not into the country for which we have the resident's permit (eg into France). Theoretically we should be OK but in practice...

Hi sir . I'm from India working in romania now , I've romanian TRC Card ,as you know now romania is a part of Schengen ,so do i need Etias to travel anywhere in Schengen zone?

ETIAS does not start until 2025.

ETIAS is for countries that do not require a visa to enter the Schegen area, India is not one of these, so I assume that you have a visa to live and work in Romania. If you are travelling within the Schengen area there are no border controls. Working would be a different matter.

I used to enter europe visa free with an Australian passport, what if you have a criminal record that we didnt need to declare before

With an Australian passport you still won't need a visa to visit for a holiday/short stay. As for the criminal record that will be decided on the threat level. and individually.

@@RedneckHodler Yes, but it wouldn't have been necessary if the UK was still in the EU. It is because the UK is now a 3rd country, not part of the EU of EFTA.
