My understanding is that the power cable comes out to the front like it does to stop water flowing into the camera. As the majority of people point the camera down, if the cable was the other way then water could flow down the cable and into the power port. By facing the cable the other way, the cable has to loop back on itself causing the water to stay on the cable. When electricians run cables outdoors, they do a similar thing by creating a U shape before going into a wall, this stops water flowing into the building. I would have much preferred them to use a barrel jack, as to power the camera 24/7 I need to drill a 15mm hole to get the end of the cable through, whereas the thickness of the cable is only around 6mm.

The power cable actually makes sense. My camera is against the wall and points down into my yard, if the cord pointed back then the wall would be in the way and I wouldn't be able to point the camera down. If you saw my camera on the wall it looks right and you'd completely understand why it's pointed forward. The big issue I have is with the home app. It sucks! I have the nest doorbell that works on the nest app and that's why I bought the nest camera. Except the camera doesn't work on the nest app. I find notifications don't catch things very well, they miss alot. But having 24/7 recording and how well the nest app can scrub the timeline makes it easy to see if anything came into view. The home app doesn't allow for scrubbing the timeline. It takes 3 to 5 seconds to load every time you move to a different point on the timeline. So if something happen over night the camera zones didn't catch it (which it so often doesn't) you will have to review a whole 6 to 8 hours of footage in real time because there is no way to fast forward or rewind like the nest app. Not using the nest app is a HUGE downgrade for this camera.

Still, POE in my opinion is probably the easier and potentially cheaper option instead of having to tap in to existing power lines or running new ones from a punch out on the breaker box. I hear romex isn't too cheap anymore where ethernet cable still is. For 6 a month, the Nest Cam really takes the cake for what I need. I think the “backwards” cable is to make an enforced “drip loop” in the cable to reduce moisture movement into your house if you have it permanently connected. Also once mounted it is easier to attach and leave in place from the front (so you don’t have to move what the camera is pointing at)

I didn't even think about that, but makes sense. I feel like with this being the biggest complaint from many reviews Google should at least write a blog post about it. Also if there was no obvious reason a third part could probably make a connector that faces the other way (probably wouldn't be supported by Google). There was definitely intent. I first though it was just in case you angle it at a hard down angle.

I have both the new and old versions of these cameras. A few things to be aware of: 1. Google doesn't support the new one with the old Nest Software 2. The old Nest software is still better for the security cameras than the new Google Home software is. Many features are not supported. 3. Google Home still doesn't support the old camera. So you are locked into using two different apps if you have a system with mixed old and new cameras. 4. Yes, you can get 24/7 recording service for both new and old cameras, but the Google Home software only allows triggered events to be downloaded. I couldn't believe this. Selling 24/7 camera service that doesn't allow the content to be downloaded borders on fraud. But that was the way it was the last time I checked. 5. When I went to buy another camera I actually had to pay more for the old model than the new model. Presumably because I'm not the only one to realize what I've said above. Caveat: all of the above was true, I have no information as of today that it is still not true. Opinion: I would not buy a Google Security system as of today. It is not clear what Google's intents are, but they have treated old customers poorly and whether they have long term goals for this product line is not clear to me. They love to brag about new features, but they have done nothing to fix long standing problems.

@davefoc
@davefoc 2 жыл бұрын
@@UrcurseInCanada It is a strange situation and it is hard to see what the motivation for this is. Maybe: 1. NIH, Google programmers are so great we don't need that NEST stuff. 2. Google sees the future as integrated house controllers and NEST wasn't that so they're putting all their resources into getting Google Home working and they just don't care about security camera part of that right now. 3. Google is such a giant corporation that top level management sometimes doesn't notice when a little element of the organization goes off the rails . 4. Internal politics. Somebody with power at Google, has decided that the failure of Google Home and the Google Nest stuff is in their interest and they're working to make that happen. I don't know and all of the above seems unlikely, but why would Google do this?

Note, however, it occasionally (but rarely) fails to record a person even in full sunlight, and I can't explain that, but it's happened about once every 2 months. Also, one time when my internet provider crashed and then resumed service, it was a little difficult to get the Nest camera connected again.

What a disappointment these cameras are. I purchased the doorbell and two cameras. The doorbell does work. With the two cameras, they went through the setup correctly and I saw live video through them but when I finished setting them up I went to view the live feed and they were turned off. I tried to go to "more" to turn them on and the option was ghosted. I could turn the doorbell on and off just fine but the cameras were permanently off. They are both about 12-15 feet from my from my Netgear router and I also tried 5G and even different routers but to no avail. I went through the same process as setting up the doorbell so I don't think I did anything wrong. I just think the cameras wifi circuitry is subpar. Reading other comments on different nest cam (battery) cameras I'm seeing a striking commonality of the cameras inability to connect to wifi. My advice, wait or find something better, or you're taking your chances...

Debating on getting 2 cameras I need one for the front and back yard. North side front, south side gets back sun exposure. Ideally leave them inside and plugged in. Suggestions on a brand or brands that would work for my concerns. No lag between movements, leaves blowing creating false alerts, sunlight making the camera unable to see.

Had this camera mounted in an outside hallway where there is an LED light. It was there to monitor a utility closet that kept getting broken into. It was useless. The picture had these bars going across it that prevented a clear view of the perpetrator who did show up, but was only recorded walking away with stuff in his hands. What did show was extremely dim. It turned out that although the hallway appeared bright to us, it shown as dark and blurry by this camera. So I exchanged the camera with a cheaper one in another room. Under normal light it behaved great. The cheaper camera also had no problem in that hallway. This one cost me near $200 where the other one was a tad under $50. Not only that, but the cheaper one can be aimed remotely where this one is fixed.

The IQ was not the previous model to this, it was a higher resolution camera so you are comparing am older higher end, higher resolution model to the newer lower resolution one. You are comparing two different products, you should be comparing the new one to the older one that is of the same model at least or do you normally compare a hatchback to a racing car?

The camera is not vandal-proof. Anybody with a long tree branch could knock the camera off because it's only holding on magnetically, and also the white wire should be hidden inside the product and not exposed where anybody could cut the wire or damage the wire. And add 4K, 12MP, 180-degree view, crystal clear picture quality day or night, and able to read fonts 100+ feet away. Or just copy what Eufy did for their "Eufy Floodlight Cam 2 Pro!"

I purchased two of these cameras. One of them the battery dies 20-30% per day. Surprisingly all the reviews I watched so far conveniently are leaving out the worst part is that the nest aware events DOES NOT work. At best it is 2/10. If a car pulls up and it happens to catch it then I see the last few seconds of vehicle driving away. I had two bicycles out front removed right in front of camera and it showed nothing in the events. I could go on with many examples. Spent hours and days with Google and they offered to credit one month subscription of nest aware 😂

What will happen when nights are regularly 10 degrees F?? I already caved and bought the $35 weatherproof cable for both cameras. Any suggestions for increasing battery life? Is there any other advice for the battery-operated use of the Nest? I would plug it in if I'm away for a vacation. This year, 2024, will be my last year in this apartment. @@SteveDOES More importantly, what about the Battery Life Cycle itself? Meaning, is the battery when it eventually loses capacity, is it replaceable? Or is the camera junk? That's a big deal on the overall value proposition here. While I have experience with the Arlo Ultra 2 (that was returned), the good thing there is, when the battery fails, it's easily replaceable. I'm not seeing the same here, and I think this is something that might be getting glossed over in a lot of reviews. In an outdoor environment, this battery might only last a 18 to 24 months. Then is it a throwaway? That's a big deal. I haven't been able to get a straight answer on this.
