Interesting review, as always. I have these drivers in a pair of small floorstanders Jordan SL-B. Very nice speakers, custom built so overly expensive but pretty unique. Work very well with all types of music and also great doubling up as enhanced sound for the TV occasionally for a good film. I think it’s pertinent to mention that EJ Jordan set out to design this Marlow model as a modern update to the Rogers LS3/5A, basically a modern small sealed box design for those who loved the BBC monitors from back in the day. I also have a pair of Jordan Watts speakers that are a similar design to the Rogers/BBC unit, I found them a few years ago in Germany. They contain the JW modules and are also sealed box; I must say those speakers are unique. The sound they produce, to me, is pretty unrivaled; they’re not the most powerful but I don’t listen to loud music much any more and at lower volumes they are astounding. Hard to describe how clean and accurate those modules are, with the bass right on point. They’re kind of a cult item but if you do see a pair in good condition pick them up, for me they are the holy grail of affordable hifi sound. Ted Jordan, what a career that man had. There should be a book written about him. Btw Steve he initially became famous at Goodmans doing some pioneering speaker designs back in the 1960’s, haven’t heard those early Goodmans but heard great things about them.

After finally realizing my room acoustics were just never going to be what I wanted I almost accidentally discovered the magic of near field speaker placement. I have never looked back. Being an experimenter by nature I have taken the near field lessons I've learned from tiny speakers to large groupings of speakers but none with a listening distance greater than 44 inches, most considerably less. This is nothing short of an epiphany in my life long audio obsession and has reawakened my absolute joy of music. I might really enjoy these speakers and will look into them further. Thanks Steve. Oh but I would be remiss if I didn't mention the one rather serious drawback to nearfield systems is that it becomes a personal listening experience with a sweet spot too small to share simultaneously with friends and other audiophiles. As with everything important in life, compromises must be made and I am close to a system that can solve that problem. But not quite yet.

It's so good to see you reviewing these speakers. I have a pair of Jordan Eikona II drivers in diy translam cabinets, they are shown on the Jordan website as the Eikona Ellipsoid. As I built them to be used with a subwoofer the cabinets are sealed, no point using a port/transmission line to extend the bottom end when a sub will do it better is my thinking. These speakers image like a dream and are fast and dynamic, they have an intensity and immediacy that bring them closer to the sound of real instruments. Vocals are just gorgeous. Getting rid of the crossover gives a coherence that is totally addictive. I can't listen to speakers with a crossover slapped in the middle of the midrange anymore. To my ears getting rid of the crossover more than outweighs any downsides of a quality full range driver.

@@jareknowak8712 The Jordans are run full range, directly connected to the power amp with no crossover. The minus 6dB point of the Jordans in the sealed cabinet is 85hz. The active sub is tuned to seamlessly integrate.

Thanks for the excellent review, Steve. I am in the UK. I built a pair of near field speakers for my son, using the Jordan Eikona drivers. Wilmslow Audio made me a custom flatpack cabinet kit of the LS3/5A with a baffle cut-out for the Eikona. I can report that these drivers also work well in a sealed box (with a slightly less extended bass than ported designs). In my system (12' square listening room) they worked fine (not as loud as my Lowthers, obviously) with 4 watts of triode power and a sub-woofer. They are currently in use in another city with a pair of 300B monoblocks, near field. As you observe, these do not sound like LS3/5As but near field with single triodes they really do the business musically and I strongly recommend them.

You should look at the PearlAcoustics Sibelius SG. Single driver, floor standers, solid oak cabinet, full binding posts, can be used in larger rooms, better low frequency response. I actually have not used my REL sub with the Sibelius, as the REL will take off some of the crispness and detail. Paired with a PrimaLuna EVO300 and a PassLabs XA25.

“There’s no replacement for displacement” as the say. I build with my son a pair of Audio Nirvana Super 8’s many years back that sound great. Common sense Audio/Audio Nervana also do full range drivers from 4” to 15” It’s worth a look if you have a big room to fill with sound and where the Jordan’s just won’t cut it. Great drivers, fantastic value, however, based on my experiences, they sound best in horn loaded boxes or better still open baffles, possibly even sealed with passive radiator, but not the recommended bass reflex designs you receive with the purchase.

Depending on the specific Speaker Driver, when you go beyond the 6 1/2-to-8-inch range. You're going to lose those special qualities as described by Steve. (And many of those may be too large) Of course, I'm not trying to discourage you from "going bigger". But as Steve noted; It's Best to let a Subwoofer do the "heavy lifting". When it comes to this and similar speaker drivers; It's always best to make they're inherent qualities shine. Even if it requires sacrificing bass. Of course, that's the purpose of the Speaker Cabinet. As different types of Cabinets, "load" Speaker Drivers differently. Looking for more sensitivity / SPL - Why not use multiples in a "Line Source" tower? Or a Single Driver in a Rear Loaded Horn Cabinet. As used on 4-inch Full Range Drivers made by both Fostex & Coral. The plans can be found online. With Your Time and Money, in mind - a Sub" is "the Other Half of the Solution". Also Get Big Woofers. If You must. But remember - Multiple Subs are better than One. (It beats spending a Fortune on the Acoustic Treatment of a Room !) "Good Luck & "Good Hunting" ! ;-)

Hi, hear in England I used to work in the same building as a loudspeaker manufacturer called Jordan Watts this was in the 70s, Mr Watts made ( I think ) and used the modules at 1minute 29 seconds in your video, I got to be friends with Mr Watts and very often would see him for a chat and watch his staff make the speakers and he let me borrow several different pairs from time to time, listened to on axis they were fine off axis and the treble dropped off quite a lot. They were 4inch long throw drivers and could take about 15 watts but being small they didn't pack much of a punch but non the less were very pleasant to listen to, so I think the Marlow's could be using the latest incarnation of those drivers.

Wow, that is so interesting! To think you worked in that building and had conversations with Mr Watts - this is mind blowing to me. I’m a big fan of those 2 men. I still think the Jordan Watts loudspeakers from the 60’s & 70’s were unique in that they provided superior sound at prices that were affordable to most. @@quantum5652 I borrowed everything from bookshelf designs to the large floor standers some of which had 4 modules I think it was, some used a bass reflex system others used a supplementary tweeter and passive bass unit to extend the frequency response both ends and also to increase the power handling capabilities. We are talking 50 years ago so memory getting a little cloudy now. The factory was on the second floor of Benlow Works Silverdale Road in Hayes Middlesex. I did buy a pair of Juliet's and stood them on tall wooden stools looked a little odd but sounded great. I've always had a thing for point source speakers I moved on to Tannoy Duel Concentrics an downsized to KEF Uni Qs a few year back. I'm 75 so hearing failing a bit now sad to say. Happy Listening.

I'm in France. Over there Supravox has been producing wide band drivers since 1940. You can buy a pair of speakers with Supravox drivers for around 800€. Other noteworthy brands include Audax and Davis.

If you want to hear what a Jordan driver can do you absolutely have to check out the Carolina Audio Speakers that use Jordans or the newer Mark Audio drivers in 1/4 wave transmission line. Much better bass than the simple reflex cabinet hear. The magic of these Jordan drivers are their coherence and transparency. At their best they can sound like Quads with dynamics and bass!

Remember Jordan Watts? Very much the similar to this but five decades ago. The finest full range crossoverless speaker I've ever heard is the Davis Acoustics MV-One using a single 9 inch cone yet with deep and tight bass and accurate extended highs. I don't know how they do it... it seems to defy the laws of physics.

The MINIRIG 3 is a small 3” full range Bluetooth battery powered speaker, that has wireless stereo pairing, and a 3” portable battery powered subwoofer that needs to be connected to the source speaker with auxiliary connection. They sound marvelous and achieve the full spectrum of sound, even without the subwoofer, and despite the absence of a tweeter. They are pretty mind blowing with catch that the wireless stereo connection can sometimes be weak and result in dropout in the slave speaker. I would be very interested on your opinion of them Steve! Let me know if you ever get a chance to hear some, or are in the East Bay Area and have a chance to stop by to hear my pair!

I think like with any fullrange no crossover (eg. simple impedance load) it would be good to highlight that they are a good match to triode amplification. Aside form conherence, amplifier choice is possibly the main reason to go fullrange...

Having possibility to compare their performance by switching between class AB exceptional solid amplifier and PP tube find that in real world difference comes only from details of their circuitry no from vacuum or solid parts . I'd say fullranges can even nicely compensate faults of AB solid amplification. Conclusion - with precision alignment of construction and positioning to walls and floor by overall impression it usually can top crossover ideas . Tested possibility of supplementation by subwoofer I found it worse with too fat bass. But it is of course my personal taste My main considerationfor fullranges is about power - this one has 86dB/W and 100W which indicates equal to speaker having average 92dB it delivers like 25W - quite a lot - we may expect probably easy 107 dB at max . In high efficient driver I would count it (to be safe) equal to continuous sinus 10W at 1000 Hz. But again can't be loaded so at lower than say 40 Hz .I have experience of damaging small power full range speaker only by testing and I use now closed inner space which is more safe. Surprisingly even for me with speaker fi 10cm it was possible to get rid of port and sub . Price paid for it is only max loudness but it is fair enough from distance 10 ft.

@@jareknowak8712 Well the jordan (and alpair) don't they are way under 90db, but then I was happy with the jordan in the classical VTL enclosure far field with 8watt 300b cause it's an easy load... I don't use them anymore but was a positive experience. The thing about fullrange is that really one have to live with them for a while to understand them and they are not generic purpose designs so one has to know what they are looking for and accept the compromises, or look for smart solutions like OB fullrange + woofer, these can be done on a budget and would probably be good with more music material (allowing complex material with better dynamics, power handling, less distortion) then a single driver would.

@@bernardstachman3507 In the late 90s/early 00s i started experimenting with speakers/acoustics. My first was an OB with 100mm Akai (Fostex) and 2x 30cm per side. I didnt really like it. Interesting "special effects", but it had little to do with audio fidelity. The room is part of a loudspeaker much more than in any other construction. I like closed-box the most.

Run them with a sub and the top end is more engaging. An audio illusion caused by more contrast between bass&treble. That is one reason why I build speakers with a FR driver and a regular woofer. Better bass and an an illusion of "more" top end. Sounds like multi drivers with a bigger sound but with point source.

I know there has been a lot, and you know better than me, of advancement in small speakers, but I am not giving up my LS3/5a's. I've had them since 1978, used them in a variety of settings, for the past 10-15 years in my 2 channel AV system (with a streamer) --- as I tell folks, how is a multi-channel system going to increase my enjoyment of, say, screwball comedies, or "The Seventh Seal?"

If I heard correctly you can purchase the drivers for $775 a pair and the speakers for $2500 a pair. Those are some very expensive thin Baltic Birch ply boxes considering there is no crossover. YIKES!

Dear Steve... I have to laugh every time I am here listening to your summations. And as always I totally enjoy them. And likely as not I'll not ever own 1/32 of or 95% of anything reviewed. That does not diminish any of my pleasures derived as that 5% is where l live. And this small speaker seems right up my alley. Small speakers sound like small speakers except if it is a vintage Klipsch speaker made in USA like the Klipsch KG 1.5. Made when the master Paul Klipsch was at the helm and everything was made locally including the inside electronic parts. They also made larger KGs but this baby is a monster.

It'd be an interesting comparison to put the Marlow up against the Closer Acoustics' Ogy .. Or even try their open baffle sub (Bob) with the Marlow. I'd love to get one of the two for acoustic music and Jazz. Sounds like the Marlow might be able to handle high energy music a little better than Ogy -- I've heard it falls a little flat with Rock music, but absolutely ideal with vocals and delicate instrumentals.

The benefits of a sub to this speaker would be more interesting not in the lower extension aspect, but in freeing up the single driver from having to reproduce the lower frequencies. So it can focus on the more important midrange and higher frequencies. That imo is the added benefit of subs.

With such idea must be applied crossover and it dumps sense of widerange which suppose to be phase coherence Looking at my experience porting of the sub box does the same damage because subs commonly are ported. That is because all ports create resonance points and resonance point works as a reversing point of phase . Sure we cant' totally get rid of waving the phase but for gains better to pull them down to lowest range by using room distances not with ports I tried many port constructions - they were usually fantastic but closed space made at last with unusual shape and material for me is my final winner.

@@jareknowak8712 I am an author of patented 2,5 way low phase shift crossover which I presented at AES and used since 91 as main solution for my constructions but why to improve crosover? I better ended with getting rid of it. Actually I surrended high loudness (which in my opinion is a blind point) and with small vintage fullranges about 2 Watts I got (at my hobbyst level) everything I was imaging . When we use digital crossover the double location of sound source with doubled reflections must make damage to original wave. Because I am fan of original impression as recorded. Only in such way each piece of music sounds unique. I use simmilar set of such wideranges supported by two subs ,"like baffle" made of two 10" fullranges without crossover for my studio recordings. With subs "on" it is "better then natural" but reminds more wishes of most listeners. - just to know the popular reception of my recording.

Unless I have things backwards, +-12dB is not an advantage in advertising frequency response. +-3dB means, unless I’m nuts, that the lower frequency available with only a 3dB loss. Saying it goes down to 48hz at -12dB, means you hear 48hz, but it’s 12dB down. ie. you can hardly hear it. Do I have that backwards?

Had a complete surprise last night sitting 12' back and between 2 ELAC Debut 6.2's without grills. I was bombed by giant but concentrated air puffs from the front ports. It took me a second to figure it out. Why doesn't anyone talk about this as a thing???? The first silent puff got me right in the forehead as I sat there in confusion. Hi, Steve, thank you for this part. I understand and like the benefit of a full range speaker. In this model case the sensitivity was 86 dB. I wish the manufacturer could produce the same sort speakers of higher sensitivity. That might interest me more. Thanks Steve.

I got some 10" PRV full range drivers on PE for $60. each, 100dB, dropped them in some thrift store CV 1.8c ft ported boxes, $30. So for $150. I got some highly efficient and great sounding speakers. I find myself listening to these even more than my $600. speakers. Alison Krauss, A Hundred Miles or More, OMG !!

. Before I looked them up, I was going to say The drivers might make excellent midranges in a 3-way. Now I see this driver is 85.2 Db efficient with a 50 watt max power handling. That's horrible for any use.

Full-range drivers are one of those peculiar things. Despite their limitations, it's possible for them to sound REALLY good, especially in conjunction with an equalizer. If you ask me, though, 770 bucks is way over the top no matter how good they are--the whole point of using them is very low cost for given performance.

Quite surprising how low the sensitivity rating is for a single crossoverless driver.

They are a great type speaker but they are not crankers. The excursions cause "Dopler affect" and sounds "harsh" in the upper med and lower treble with more than 1/8" excursions. I addressed this by a 82 mf cap on the driver and an extra woofer in the speaker box. Still not crankers but WAY more crankable. My crankers are coaxials. Never normal 2 ways or 3 ways (no way).

As i worked in audio engineering industry, having interactions with people only made me listen to myself more. I particulary annoys me when people comment on headphones that they are great, because they are fOoL rAnGe. REALLY? Because not even technically are they full range. Theres information missing on the top and bottom and why FULL range? Is there an empty one? JK, but even if its playing all the freq that we can hear, its a lie, because full range speaker will never produce 20hz accurately and 5k and above will almost always be butchered all over the place. So thats a full range for ya... a 3in1 coffee

I have a pair, and they are awesome! Love them. Had B&W CM6 SII before, and the clean sound and detail from the Sibelius is fantastic. Great solid oak craftsmanship as well. Full binding posts, so no complaints. Plus Harley gives excellent customer care, best in the industry by far.

That's a very expensive tiny speaker, too costly. I'd probably choose the omega 8s I have myself, those are a great overlooked speaker that don't come up often, and I can say they are one of my favorites I've had, even over many modern highly ranked speakers, both ls50 models, LS3/5a, I like the omegas better than either of those and those, no complaints, very very good, well done omega, and still a usa company.
