Moved from Michell Orbe SE/SME to the 1200G for mostly the same reason. Upgraded the G with Oyaide BR-12 mat, carbon fibre headshell, Furutech phono lead and changed the torque to approx half way setting. Previously 301,401, LP12, 124,Roksan and other TT's but the G just makes the listening experience just right. Shall await with interest your experience with the G. Just yesterday I upgraded my 1210GRs headshell with Oyaides carbon fibre. The improvement was quite noticeable. I wasn't aware of their platter mat, going to check that out.

Derek, what cartridge(s) are you using? noticed that the audiophiliac seemed to have down graded his cartridges. I also am interested in this turntable, but mainly because I want play with different cartridges, unfortunately I have a transimpedance phono stage that limits me to low output cartridges. I'm wondering if this table is more suited for more high energy cartridges like high output moving irons.

@@BobCoalWater I'm using a Audio Technica AT33PTGII and an AT33EV into EAR834P Sig phono stage. The G is a wonderful TT for the price in my opinion and the arm is just fine. See the Technics video about how Michiko Ogawa sought out old boy employees to come back and make the arm. Spirit of Japan.

I hear you on direct drive turntables, though I did get through repairing a belt drive Dual 1241 for a friend a couple of months ago that was pretty nice sounding to be fair. But, I don't think I'll be getting rid of my Technics SL-1200M3D (Shure V15VxMR) and Sony PS-X600 (Ortofon X5-MC) anytime soon.

Hi Steve! Welcome to the club, I left belt deive 10 years ago! I had a Linn Sondek LP12 with Ortofon Jubliee, Once I tried next to the Linn with same catrige a1210mk2.I cried forr two days, because the Linn cost mea lots of money. Sice thhem I have an M3Dand a SP10 mk2! The SP10 mk2 is better the G! Try it!

Around 10 years ago, I gave up my Linn Sondek (which I had for more than 25 years) and replaced it with a Technics SL-1200 MK 2. To me, the Technics sounded about 95 percent as good as the Linn did when the Linn was working properly. The problem is that the Linn rarely was in peak form--it needed tweeking on a regular basis and I spent a lot of money getting it tweeked. The Technics, on the other hand, is fabulously reliable. It sounds they way it sounds every single time I play it. And I love that. It has also cost me nothing to maintain. OTOH, I also love my Honda Accord and Johnny Walker Black scotch, so maybe i am just not a high-end person in any dimension.

I like your disclaimer on the end haha. To be fair Johnny Walker Black is overwhelmingly a blend of Caol Ila whisky mixed with some cheaper stuff. Caol Ila is literally the best Distillery IMO in Islay overall. Double Black is just a higher ratio of Caol Ila in the blend. So you're not as basic as you say, just economical!

The Accord is a good car ...just like the SL 1200 mark II. A good drive, does what it's supposed to do and very reliable. As far as the Scotch Whisky goes...I have some Irish blood in me . I discovered the two don't mix well. Anyway I be using my Technics SL-7 put the record on close"n"play. My Stanton L747S even has a brush...when I'm lazy! I just pulled a power cord in a dumpster years ago...and this little whale was at the other end . $105 for the Stanton. It puts a smile on my face 😊 every time I use it. It's kind of cute too sittingon top of my JVCDD-7 ( yeah I said it has good enough isolation)..the foot print is the size of an album jacket and has good enough isolation since it's as heavy as my SL-1200 mark II (another dumpster find ...needs a tone arm bearing...eventually I'll fix that) .

love your videos ..however, It all really comes down your hearing ability.. Most don't even mention this..me as an nearly 84 year old man , obviously my hearing has deteriorated over the years, but my system definitely gives me true pleasure in listening to it... I use a Fluance RT-85 tt with a orofon 2 m blue and a shure V15II into a Kenwood KA-5500 amp and Fluance Signature series and B&W dm6 speakers

Interesting you would say that. I’m 53 now and 10 years ago I auditioned a Linn system with my then 76 yo father at BillyVee hifi in London. My father just had his first hearing aids. The linn speakers we listened to were the top of the line Klimax speakers, active drive with 10 (!) mono amps, 5 per speaker. The dealer had us listen to our own music on cd. Then he disconnected the super tweeters that have a range from 20kHz to 44kHz. As a trained electronics engineer and hifi enthusiast I was sure this wouldn’t make any difference. Boy was I wrong. I heard a clear difference but also my father. Turns out harmonics and many, many other variables play a role. Technics used to charge $400 for a brand new SL-1200. Audiophiles didn't 'approve' of Technics tables until they started charging big money for them. You could lock these dudes in a room with a 1200G and a GR in a blind abx setup with rules in place that they're not allowed out until they pass a 10/10 blind test identification of the tables, only difference being the table. They'd all die in that room.

After a couple decades of not listening to vinyl I decided to take my turntable out of storage in my basement and bring up a handful of my favorite albums. My turntable is a vintage 1970s Technics SL 1600. After 20+ years boxed up on a shelf I was surprised it even ran. All though not as good as new, after a 5 minute “warm up” I was able to get the speed adjusted and Abbey Road sounded so good. The 1600 needs a little patience each time I play it but it still brings me joy after almost 50 years.

I also made the switch "back" to direct drive Technics from belt drive. However, I'm going to disagree with you on this, the G sounds better possibly, but it doesn't sound $3500 dollars better than the GR. At a certain point there is always diminishing returns, and coupled with the right cartridge, matt, etc, a GR can sound just as good if not close, and even and MK7 can be enough for most enthusiast up to "audiophiles".

I've had my 1200G for about two years now (it replaced a 1200 MK 7 which replaced a MK2). It's the last turntable I ever buy. I use an Ortofon 2M Black on it and I love that combination. The 1200G is a joy to touch and operate and it's always ready to roll. No tweaking, no speed fluctuations, no issues what so ever. It's reliable, it sounds great and if another small company was making it, it would have cost triple the price. Great video Steve!

The MK2 is a better deck than the MK7! The G on the other hand is superb.

I have a SL-1600 MK2 that has the super isolated body and the rubber underside platter like the G. It also has a Vertical Tracking Angle adjustment that you don't see on some of the other Technics decks. It does sound great and I've never had to use isolation tables or special feet. It blocks sub-sonics from getting back into the system very well. Love my Technics. Glad you had such a great time reviewing these.

SME is not the best ,there is more to choose and better but i use it to, having several turntables around 6 and all sound perfect ,can you tell the diferencies from the SL-3310 from the SL-1210g ,i never could although i have both and the best from technics a non professional one in a reference above and don´t forget that in the 90´s the SL-1200 was garbage for the audiophiles that are not what they are called but to identify snobs that think that having money make their hears better than others

It’s just interesting to see a seasoned listener with experience in hearing and owning equipment of substantial cost and sonic qualities remove a critical piece in favor of a less expensive one. Steve did an admirable job of explaining why. It’s often been stated that as we age, our taste/preference change. The SME is regarded by none too few Audiophiles as a pinnacle to their system. It’s a strive till you arrive item, and while there certainly are far more expensive options the SME has its place. I personally don’t care what it cost as long as it adds to the overall synergy of the total system and makes my toes tap and puts a smile on my face.

I feel transparency can be a bit fatiguing sometimes - I agree you can listen to something like the 1200 for so much longer, also the durability aspect of Techincs makes it very enjoyable to not feel on edge around your equipment

I just bought my third 1200 and this is why. There are better sounding decks. The Technics, with some modification are good enough and nothing is more user friendly. I see what you said over and over again. Why would a guy with a ten thousand dollar turntable not use that? The Technics must be good enough to overcome the headaches of dealing with those very high end turntables. To me that says save my money and invest it in other areas. I'll be honest. I want to swap the arm and power supply on the MK2 I'm refurbishing but other than that I'm good. I'll only swap the arm if I can find one with the same removable stylus functionality though. Otherwise it defeats the point for my needs.

I am 100% on the removable head shell train! Technics 1500c for my main setup, and Fluance Rt-85 for my headphone setup. I probably wouldn't be inclined to buy another fixed head shell deck. It's too much fun swapping carts. Steve have you tried the KAB fluid dampening tonearm upgrade for your Technics decks? I have not yet, but people insist it's a substantial upgrade.

My Clearaudio Concept died out and I went with a 1210GR as a replacement and I had the same experience as you regarding the ease of use. Adjustments and setup are just WAY more intuitive than the Clearaudio.

After researching so many Turntables I went with the GR1200 and am very happy with my choice. I have considered upgrading to the 1200G but it would have to be an "Oh Wow" experience when comparing to my 120GR. Bear in mind I would demo with the same cartridge. Love the swappable cartridge as well.

I have a Rega P3 and a Technics sl1210Gr along with a VPI Classic 2. I have a Grado Gold on the Rega and another Grado Gold on the 1210gr. The Rega sounds noticibly better and I end up listening to the Rega/Grado combo more than the technics. The VPI /Denon being the one I listen to most. Changing cartridges isn’t as much fun as people make it out to be. You end up preferring one cartridge over the others and end up listening to that one all the time. For sound quality, simplicity and ease of use the Rega tables are unbeatable. I have a feeling he will miss his SME in the coming months. The Technics tables are good don’t get me wrong, but they’re aim is to multi task I.e. dj, quick change out if during dj use if a cartridge breaks, and multiple cartridge use. The Rega and SME’s of the world aim at sound quality. I want sound quality.

Wow - dumped his $15k+ turntable for a $4k DD? That’s quite a shift. Even though he feels that the SME is a better tt overall, he’s going for something that excites him more. Darko had similar impressions between his GR and Rega 3. The G/GR’s are less fussy and more quickly tweaked than a lot of tables.

Difference is that going from a P3 to GR is a lateral shift. Going from a 15 to a G is a pretty big step down.

You can’t look at this in the context of absolute sound reproduction alone, especially for a turntable. If you ever want to use an Ortofon SPU, or change cartridges easily, you need an arm with a removable headshell. These arms are compromised across the board because the contacts are not great, azymuth changes every time you swap, arm rigidity is not as high, etc etc etc. So once you have decided to go with a removable shell arm, even on an SME 15, you’re at a lower level compared to an SME V arm. Once you made that choice, the switch from the SME 15 spinner to the 1200G isn’t all that clear cut, I think.

@@miguelbarrio I hear what you’re saying… but I still don’t know why Steve couldn’t have gone with an SME 3009 arm on the SME 15. Sure the arm would be compromised compared to the V… but you’d still retain all the benefits of the SME turntable plus a removable headshell. Or am I missing something?

I Dj'ed from '99 to '05 and used the Technics mkII and mkIII which was pretty much standard for all Djs. Never thought of them as at home listening tables but it makes sense because they are just really good turn tables.

I have a 1200GR (Technics SL-1210GR black version) and, it kills me to say this, but I don't think it sounds as good as my recently decommissioned Dual 701, particularly with Grado Prestige series cartridges. I think it's a little better with AudioTechnica cartridges, but I keep telling myself I need to get a cartridge more precisely aligned to really get the best from it - something with a hypereliptical tip. It sounds perfectly great with an AudioTechica AT3600L on beat up old thrift store polka records, but . . . I won't bother to state the obvious there. It's a beautiful turntable in almost every way, but I have to be honest that the sound has been a little bit of a let-down. Now I feel compelled to get the Dual fixed. I am going to try a classic Denon DL103 catridge with this Technics SL-1200GR and see if it's a good match. They both have radio station origins, so maybe they'll play nice together. On the very technical side, it seems to me that the Grado Prestige series cartridges, (and maybe all of them?), work better on low mass tonearms. The lower compliance (lower flexibility of the cantilever suspension pivot) cartridges work better on medium mass tonearms. Maybe I just need to have two turntables?

There was no bad design , the Series Iv and V had one piece arm tubes for rigidity and low mass , just as had been first done on the Series II fixed headshell . If a detachable headshell was a requirement , SME made the 309 which was a similar design to the Series IV and V but with the removable headshell . Of course it was a 'budget' version of the Series IV , but it did exist .

Living with a product over time makes the small details count, using the product needs to be a pleasure. There’s a reason streaming is the number one way to listen to music, it suits more users needs.

Just bought the 50th anniversary 1200 as my first turntable out of sheer nostalgia and reputation from watching DJs with them my whole life. I’m not disappointed. They’re as fun to play with as they always looked and they perform as advertised. If it gets better, good on ya.

I purchased one of the first Technics SL1000R when they were released a few years ago. I sold my SME table and I completely agree with all your description between the sounds. However, I immediately started missing my SME, the Technics has just no soul as a machine, it looks perfect and feels perfect but something is missing as far as the interaction.

I would admit yours would suffer due to the lighter mass of your turntable in a 'playing' live environment . . This is hilarious when belt people think this is new because of an outrageous price tag.

I was going through my belongings in my garage last year and found a turntable I has bought back in 1980 or so, and cleaned it up and brought it in my home. It had a Grace Ruby cartridge and stylus mounted on the headshell. The turntable is a Technics SL-1200 Mark II. She sounds sweet!

I recently got a GAE , use it with a Nag JT-80bk MM cartridge, which I think is a reissue of the cartridge at nag made specifically for technics for a limited run of the Gae. Seems to work really well.

I treated myself to a 1200G back in 2019 and I don't regret it one bit. Rarely do I splurge on something so nice but I know if well taken care of, this thing will likely outlast my ability to bend over to pick out an album. It's built like a tank. The solid construction and overall feeling interacting with this turntable just brings a smile to my face every time I drop on an album to kick back at the end of the day. The ability to quickly swap the carts is super handy and something I didn't think I would use as much as I do, but now that I have the ability, I find myself trying out different carts with different albums simply because it's so easy to swap.

To Mrmoogle, I done exactly the same in Feb 21 , after years and years faffing and pratting around with a JA michell, I find myself playing records now so much more than I used to , every thing is so easy and predictable with the G , swapping cartridge and headshells in seconds, and playing records I thought I didn't like of which I now love .

So for a very simplistic comparison we have basically the g which costs $100/lb while the gr costs $68/lb. 🤷🏻‍♂️ Then looking at other parameters maybe a prospective buyer can determine which one gives delivers more bang for the back. 😉 There will always be a debate between belt drive vs direct drive. Each has its merits and drawbacks. Get what you like within your budget and just enjoy your favorite albums and don’t look back. As always very spot on and timely for those pondering an important upgrade to their kit.

Technics are always great and industry standard, I always recommend direct drive for newer audiophiles, I do not enjoy having to replace the belt drive although it’s gotten easier over the years

well done.Belt drives are not good .The belt stretches and so playback is irregular and will damage your vinyl.Direct drives can be a bit harder on your vinyl but you can mitigate that with good needles and a properly set tone arm especially on a good quality direct drive deck but belts are rubbish

It is a backwards move IMHO. It is interesting that before the comeback of vinyl, it was often said that direct drive turntables paved the way to the Compact Disc and digital audio. Many audiophiles said that if people heard vinyl played on a high quality manual belt drive turntable (Linn, Rega, etc.), they would not have been so quick to switch to CDs. My experience is that although direct drive sound may be more precise in some ways, the sound is somewhat mechanical and does not have the same musical flow as belt drive. Also, there are issues associated with directly coupling a platter to a motor without the isolation that the belt provides. The original Rega RB 300 one-piece tonearm was also a major innovation at the time and something many people said could not be done. Now that turntables are once again becoming a mass market item, features such as detachable headshells, automation, etc., which are convenient but that degrade the sound, are making a comeback. It may be true that "what goes around comes around" but this is not always a good thing.

You're also comparing apples to oranges here, though. What are you using as your personal benchmark for DD sound? There's a massive difference between the $150 Technics you saw at Wall to Wall Sound and Video in the 80s to a high end DD. The motor isn't coupled, per se, in the majority of the high end DD tables. In the case of Denon and Nak (and Sony, by licensing), they use the platter as part of the stator assembly. The "coupling" is less direct than a belt. It's magnetism. Regarding auto pickup/return/placement , how do you think they trigger on higher end tables? It's not a rod/lever assembly like a cheap record changer. It's an optical sensor that has a trigger, breaking a beam of light in my examples. My TT isn't that sensitive that light impacts playing. Same lift assembly picks up the tonearm, just automatic. My most automated table (the Sony and Denon have similar features) don't have digital sound. At all. Snag one, toss a decent MC cartridge on it, and find out.

@@andrewb4584 Granted that I would not expect Steve's $4,000 DD turntable to sound like a $150 DD turntable from the '70s or '80s. However, if I were given the choice between the $4,000 Technics and a belt drive turntable at around the same price, I would still prefer the belt drive table as having a more organic and musical sound, which is why we even bother with analog in the first place. Secondarily, I find belt drive turntables themselves to be more aesthetically appealing in comparison to the somewhat appliance-like direct drive turntables. My preference may be purely subjective but judging from the number of upvotes, there are many who feel the same way. To each his own. It is fine if you prefer direct drive, as long as I continue to have a choice.

This hobby is a big tent, we can all have great systems with different ways to get there. I'm just saying most impressions of DD tables are formed by comparing a cheap turntable to a high end belt drive. I had no sonic issues with my Delphi. It was just too fiddly to be worth the effort. Much like a lot of stuff in HiFi. For me, more hype than substance.

There is no direct coupling. A common misconception of Technics DD by rubber-band fans. The platter has the magnet ring and the motor generates a magnetic field. The only thing touching the platter is the spindle which is separate from the motor entirely and just on an oil bearing. The spindle DOES NOT TURN THE PLATTER. Magnetism does the work without any physical contact.

Whatever you prefer is your personal choice and I have no qualms about it. And I actually owned and liked ALL three drive systems: belt-drive, idler-drive, and direct-drive. But the above issue about DD motor direct coupling to the platter is a non-issue but it was repeated ad nauseam by bel-drive enthusiast and many of them are Linnies, especially in the early British press. People always forget the DD motor runs at 33rpm, which is 1/2 hertz, it is the same speed with ANY platter in ANY turntable. The DD motor itself is the stator and the platter is the rotor, just like any belt-drive table that has a platter and bearing, they all run at 33rpm, except the belt-drive motor runs at much higher speed from 300rpm all the way to 1800rpm with some idler turntables. Think about it, 1800rpm is 30Hz which is why rumble filter was invented in the first place! If there's DD noise it would be bearing noise which happens to every turntable regardless of drive system. Many belt-drive tables have the motor mounted onto the plinth so not only they have bearing noise but also high speed motor noise to deal with so the belt becomes a necessity NOT because it's inherently superior to DD. All I'm saying is that belt-drive system is NOT superior in terms of noise. I would argue it's the opposite! Just think of all things being equal that a DD table and a BD table using the same platter and same plinth and same bearing. The BD table has the extra motor with higher speed while the DD table is magnetically driven. Yes, there would less confusion if DD was coined "magnetic drive" at its inception. I've done many experiments and comparisons, noise was never an issue with DD system, provided it has decent bearing. When it comes to the sound and I do agree that many (not all!) early DD tables have a mechanical sound due to the fact that rotating a platter at slow speed SMOOTHLY is a very difficult technical task due to over aggressive servo system and cogging or "analog jitters" if you will. But much of that was overcome later with better electronics and coreless motor and many Japanese brands switched over by the late 70s. (Curiously, one of the earliest and smoothest sounding DD tables that employs coreless motor is made by a German brand, Dual, a forgotten DD innovator!) Coreless motor DD tables have a smoothness to the sound. I call the sound full of fluidity. Liquid unlike the dry matter-of-factness of many bad tables with cored motor. The curious thing is that being one of the three giants of turntable manufacturing (Sony, JVC, and Technics are the only 3 capable of making DD tables from scratch without outside help), Technics was the only one that never switched to coreless motor... until now. I believe mainly because the success of SL-1200 (and SP-10Mk2 and SP-10Mk3 or SP-02 same motor in many record cutting lathes) was so established that Technic didn't want to kill a cash cow. But after they discontinued SL-1200, their return represented a clean slate and they finally came out with a turntable with coreless motor. Hurray! When DD done right not only it's quiet and speed stable, it has a smoothness and dynamic slam due to typically higher torque that not only it can rock out but can be refined and musical. Add to the ease of use and low maintenance with no belt change, you have a music making machine anyone can enjoy. What's not to like?

Everyone knows that turntables can sound different, but I was really amazed when I replaced my tired (1978?) Technics SL-1400 MK2 with a brand new SL-1210M5G. This was in the summer of 2010, so I got one of the last few 1210M5Gs around, having to order it from a shop In Calgary, a full time zone away. Since the new turntable didn't come with a cartridge, I took the cartridge (a Shure M97xE) and headshell from the SL-1400, as well as the thick Platter Matter mat. This meant that I had to raise the tonearm to correct the VTA, but that was simple to do with the big threaded ring on the 1210M5G. So, everything that contacted the LP was the same with both turntables: the cartridge, the headshell, and the platter mat. The SL-1400 was getting old and was making a clicking sound when the platter rotated, plus the controls were getting sticky to operate. I just wanted to replace it with a new Technics, and went for the top one. When I put on the first LP, within seconds I could hear the difference. The same LP, when played on the new M5G, sounded much better. The sounds were clearer and the bass notes sounded more solid, with a sharper attack. I was amazed! Everything touching the LP was the same on both turntables, but the new turntable sounded much better. Maybe the upgraded tonearm wires on the M5G model (compared with the regular SL-1210 MK5), maybe the increased platter weight. I don't know, but the differences were unmistakable, and they were all good. 12 years later, the SL-1210M5G still sounds and looks great. I added a dust cover hinge kit from KAB, as well as a solid walnut base, which really upgraded the looks and seemed to make a slight improvement in the sound. I gave the 1400 MK2 to a buddy, who was happy to have a working turntable.

Technics in a way shot themselves in a foot when they created SL-1200 MK2, still an "accidental reference" class their other models are being compared to. First SL-1200 (MK1) was good but the MK2 changed its genes so much it became simply "the SL-1200". Match is with a good stylus and you won't be longing for better or newer from their later SL1200 product line, you can trust me on that. Creation of the 1200 MK2 was one in a lifetime event for them, when their best technical, design and engineering minds got together to create a true masterpiece. All the future MKs and models were really just a variation on the original theme. Mine still going strong, after 30 years.

The SL-1200 series is like buying a Porsche 911. They may all look the same but the interior, engine and tuning are all different. I traded-in my Rega P3 to the new black G. My only regret is I should have get the GAE when it was still available early last year.

I bought the cheaper mk7...even that turntable is great...no loose tonearm bearings, nice and smooth, no warped platter, good looking, and I got it for an end price of about $600 after credit card points and a bonus from sweetwater...I'm happy. I already have too many turntables, so my mk7 is just for fun, and it is....I can switch from my stereo cartridge to my mono to my 78 cartridge in no time. Plus I really like the red led strobe over the blue of the GR and G, I know that sounds ridiculous, but I gotta be happy looking at it. The red strobe has a nice glow in my dimly lit room.

I started with a used original DD Technics 1200 back in the late 70's and have never looked back, or desired another brand. Of course I moved on to a 1600MK2 and an 1800mk2 that is still in use today. End the upgrade madness forever and buy the Technics!

The journey of Technics started (and I am taking out the SP 10 for this although it was the first one) with the 1972 release of the SL 1200 and the artists discovering it for their art. The rest is history. There would not have been a MK2 and follow up models or today's G models without that. ❤

Don't worry about it your gr is a really good choice, I have a G model and it sounds good but to really capitalise on better sound I would have to get better amp , speakers and associated cables of which I cannot afford.

I have both, the 1210 GR and the 1210 GAE. When I compare them, I have to say that the GR sounds frescher, lighter than the G. The G has a firmer bass and sounds more - I would say "grown up" in comparison with the young and fresh GR. The magnesium tonearm is much more dampining than the aluminum tonearm of the GR. And naturally I use magnesium haedshells on the 1210 GAE.

I have a stock 1200-G and an old 1200-Mk2 with upgraded power supply and SME-V arm. I'm sure the G would sound better with the SME arm on it, but I love the ease of being able to swap out carts on a whim.

I tried an SL1200GR for a while,I made sure it was set up correctly with the same cartridge (Goldring G1042) but there was no comparison, the linn had more life and sounded more musical so I sent the Technics back. I do like the idea of swapping out cartridges but I guess I will have to find a Jelco arm instead.

There's a reason those things are found in the best and most world-class dance clubs in the world. Very few turntables have bass that offers what DJ's call "punch", the thing that gets folks jumping on the dance floor. From this review, it sounds like you definitely heard that in your trial.

Belt drive turntables are trash always have and always will be. Wow and flutter and slipping belts and replacement belts and gooly belts are all junk. Junk I tell you. If the table does 33.33 the sound is in the cart and stylus. End of. If you think otherwise go spend 20K on speaker cables....lol. I own 23 tables, and have come to conclusion that the stylus condition and cartridge quality are the only things that matter. Modern tables are a waste of money and just show pieces.

i almost bought one last summer but are rare and when for sale they are well taken care off and already had been restored and prices are high, but i had a lineartracking turntable not tangential and had a lot of unexpected functions and when new they work good some that are tangential ,normally from technics and one sanyo they are almost as a cd player in terms of functions and the audiotechnica you refer was a very good one far from entry level the entry level that were the Atn90 or atn91 or even atn3600 that were also very good even better than the entry level of shure like the M75b (older)or the N90 and N95ed(elliptical )as an example all listed were much worse than the technics EPS-275ed (e for elliptical point)that came out in 79 but people anyway bought a substitute sure stylus being a worse sounding one or full automatic technics that had a linear tracking but when substituted the cartridge that had a micro processor cease to work ,the stylus even had a litle hole so the cartridge could read the grooves ,this in those no weight and no anti-skating turntables with 1.5 grams from factory ,and the PLX-1000 if working fine are very good turntables ,i myself kept a thorens from 1970 professional one and from technics the SL-3310 ,the SL-1000mkII and from pioneer a pl-es , a pl-15d, a pl-540 a pl-430 (80´s) ,sold my two SL-1200MKII with original cartridge and stylus with two concorde from ortofon with 4 hours of use and the most i could get from them was 500€ in mint condition ,because in late 90´s the audiophiles classified it as trash not a home use turntable and without auto-return they also didn´t were good for me but now who grew up in the 90´s because of the dj fASHION NOW THE SL-1200 IS ALSO CONSIDERED AUDIOPHILE MATERIAL(sorry for the caps-lock)unintentional , all the turntables i refer are perfect in reading vinil and very good sounding better than a less than 1000€ cd player in sound quality but for music with analog instruments only a C.E.C cd player sounded very good this in the 90´s but for analog instruments with analog efects nothing beats the vinil ,and C.E.C. built turntables for several brands in the 70´s most of them for Pioneer but also other brands mostly when they started to be made of plastic ,before only some were made by chuodenki (CEC), regards

I settled on the Sony, flew beneath the radar. I have some great mid fi cartridges to rotate. It is rock sold, my seniorly ears could not hear any better.. I think a lot of audiophiles should have their hearing checked, It could be much to do about nothing.. if your hearing trims off between 10 - 15K you are likely BS yourself.

As a guy with it's cousin, a SP15, I completely agree. I've resold far newer, and more expensive models and kept that in my tube setup in my living room. I wouldn't go backwards to a belt again. Though I have considered an idler wheel setup... (and this is why I have a basement full of unused audio equipment.)

This was an excellent comparative review. I recently purchased an SL-1200G and concur with Steve's comments on its sound quality. That said, I believe Technics made a major marketing mistake with its bewildering model numbering system. Really why is the $4K model SL-1200G and the 1.7K model SL1200-GR? Oh, and the 1210G is the same as the 1200G but black. If there is a major design difference between turntable models there should also be a significant difference in its name. When Technics came out with the new 1200G they should have given it a whole new series number like SL-2200 to indicate it was not just a warmed-over version of the old SL-1200.

If I bought a Technics 1200G it would be simply because I wanted a total change of pace. I am not one to change gear unless I have a crappy piece of gear that is giving me problems. I have a 40 year old Linn Sondek LP12. And generally I like "silver" faceplates but in this case I think the "all black" is more attractive on the Technics, so I would purchase a Technics 1210G if I was going to do that. But frankly, getting rid of an SME to get a Technics? Years ago I was schooled in how superior a Linn was to just about every other table on the market. I HEARD IT! But I think Linn has priced themselves out of the game and it is only because I got this 'table from a friend so reasonably, and then was able to do upgrades gradually over the years, that it took much of the "sting" out of the total investiture. Also, it's like Ferrari mechanics, Linn dealers are few and far between and most other people won't touch them. So what I'm saying is, if the Linn died and it would cost me a fortune to get it ship shape again, I would consider the Technics.

I think the solid dynamic bass is very appealing. But in the long run a single expensive good cartridge with belt drive will go further and will not require changing cartridges. I have Koetsu black and few other popular cartridges. But after listening to Koetsu I have no desire to swap unless it’s permanent for a better cartridge.

You are actually talking about two things. Belt vs direct drive and a tonearm with detachable head shell. Without using an expensive toy DJ turntable, I believe a bit more experimentation would be in order. I think a different arm with detachable head shell on your SME 15 would be a place to start. You are going to be sorry you sold it. You could then try something like a VPI-HW-40 direct drive turntable, for example. Unless you are planning to open a dance club, that is. That's my opinion. Take it or leave it.

Why would you sell your admittedly better SME 15 turntable for an admittedly, by you, lesser turntable? You have a lot of amplifiers that all sound different and you keep them. Why not buy the new turntable and keep the better turntable? I’ll bet the “new” will wear off within a year and you will be searching for another “better” turntable, like the one you sold.

Have a Yamaha DYP8 direct drive. After 30 plus years, I looked around and decided on a Thorns 1601 semi automatic tt, with a cadenza blue moving coil. I like that your approach indicates that being a audiophile indicates that systems need to be compatible. I really enjoy the details in my system. However, if I was doing reviews having a turntable that allows easy switching of cartridges would be a big plus. I enjoy your equipment reviews and your audiophile philosophy.

Unlike DACs, Turntable technology hasn't changed much and won't change much further. I wanted a table that would last me decades. Technics was 1st on my list. A lot of these audiophile tables look like something that should be displayed as art. Technics look s like a table that wants to be played and played often. I had the opportunity to A/B the G and GR in 2 differnt systems. One system was under 12k. And the other was over(way over) 12k. Both sounded 99% alike in the under 12k system. Over that... you can hear the differences. How much over .idk. Anyways, I hope this leads to cartridges reviews/comparisons. I love the sound of the Nagaoka line.

Unscrew the headshell, replace with new headshell, tighten, adjust counterbalance, adjust antiskate, adjust VTA dial, done. Just like any other turntable. :)

Once you have the cartridge aligned properly on a head shell. Just swap the head shell and adjust as said above. Easy peasy
