Here are my notes for this video: Silk Roads, Indian Ocean, & Trans-Saharan Routes AP World History Review-Unit 2 Topics 1, 3, 4 Trade routes across Afro-Eurasia from 1200 to 1450 played a significant role in shaping cultures. The three major routes discussed are the Silk Roads (land-based), Indian Ocean trade (sea-based), and Trans-Saharan routes. Highlights Silk Roads: 🐪 Connected China to Europe and North Africa, facilitating trade of luxury goods like silk. 🧘♀ Spread culture, notably Buddhism, leading to both outward and inward changes in the faith. The Silk Roads were ancient land-based trade routes stretching from China to Europe and North Africa. They gained importance when large empires like the Roman Empire and Han China controlled the territories along the routes. Luxury goods, such as Chinese silk, were exchanged along the Silk Roads. However, they were not merely trade routes; they also served as conduits for cultural exchange. Buddhism spread widely throughout central and East Asia due to Buddhist merchants, leading to both outward and inward changes in the faith. Buddhist monasteries along the Silk Roads received lavish gifts from traveling merchants, influencing outward changes in the faith. The trade routes also saw the development of Mahayana Buddhism, introducing new doctrines emphasizing compassion and merit. Indian Ocean Trade: ⚓ Sea-based routes carried a wide variety of common and luxury goods. 🌊 Thrived due to predictable monsoons and resulted in significant maritime innovations. Luxury goods, such as Chinese porcelain, Southeast Asian spices, Indian cotton, pepper, East African ivory, and gold, were exchanged. Common bulk goods like wheat, sugar, and rice were also transported through the Indian Ocean trade routes. Predictable monsoon winds facilitated navigation, leading to significant maritime innovations like the magnetic compass and astrolabe. Chinese junks, large flat-bottomed ships with substantial cargo capacity, played a vital role in the Indian Ocean trade. Trans-Saharan Trade: 🏜 Linked North Africa and West Africa, enabling the exchange of different goods and leading to the rise of civilizations like the Kingdom of Mali. The Trans-Saharan trade routes connected North Africa and the Mediterranean with the interior of West Africa. North Africa focused on manufactured goods like cloth, glasswork, and books, while Southwest Africa specialized in agricultural products such as grain crops, yams, and kola nuts. The introduction of Arabian camels allowed caravans to cross the vast desert, transforming the Trans-Saharan trade. The trade routes contributed to the development of West African civilizations, with the Kingdom of Mali being a notable example. Mali held a monopoly on trade in horses and metals, levying taxes on salt and copper, leading to economic prosperity and the formation of a social hierarchy. The Trans-Saharan trade routes facilitated cultural exchange and the rise of flourishing urban centers in West Africa.

Summary: Silk Roads -Stretch from China to Europe into North Africa (land-based) -Specialized in trading luxury goods (SILK) -Spread and change culture (ex: Buddhism) -But it spread the Black Death too, which severely impacted all of Afro-Eurasia Indian Ocean trade -Stretch from China to East Africa (sea-based) -Traded both common and luxury goods because it was cheaper than the Silk Roads -Success is caused by prediction of monsoon and maritime innovations like the compass, astrolabe, and Chinese JUNKS -Cultural change from the trade routes is exemplified by the Srivijaya Kingdom and the Swahili civilization Trans-Saharan trade -Linked all of Africa together (land-based) -Successful because of innovations such as the Arabian camel and the caravanserai -An example of political and the cultural change is remove Kingdom of Mali

here are my notes if any of yall need it Silk Roads, Indian Ocean, & Trans-Saharan Routes [AP World History Review]-Unit 2 Topics 1, 3, 4 Afro Eurasia Silk Roads (by land) China to Europe to North America Mongols took over and trade flourished Packed in a camel or caravan Luxury goods traded Demand for silk spiked Silk Road Culture Buddhism rejected material world but temples would receive lavish gifts Buddhism atheism turned to mahayana buddhism increased compassionate works and merit Zoroastrian fire rituals into their devotional patterns. Diseases Black Death killed half of the European population Similar results in China and Islamic World Indian Ocean Routes (by sea) largest sea-based system of communication and exchange that ever existed. Stretched from China to East Africa Common and luxury goods because stuff carried on boat Luxury goods porcelain from China spices from SouthEast Asia cotton and pepper from India ivory and gold from East Africa. more common, bulk goods you’d find wheat, sugar, and rice. Monsoons: In summer the wind blew predictably northeast, and in the winter it blew predictably southwest. Maritime innovations: magnetic compass which allowed sailors to hold their bearing without sight of the sun. astrolabe which allowed sailors to calculate latitude. Chinese junks, flat bottomed ships, lots of goods, 500 men Rise of Islam Lots of land connected to Islam Culture Since this network of islands and peninsulas was situated right smack in the middle of some of the major trade routes, this made them strategically important. Rise of Srivijaya Kingdom Dominationed trade Malay sailors had long navigated the waters around Southeast Asia, but when they opened a passage through the Straits of Malacca, many surrounding sea ports in the Malay peninsula began competing for the attention of traders and travelers. Africa (indian ocean) Swahili Civilization, this civilization emerged in the 8th century as basically a set of commercial city-states. The rulers of these city-states found abundant opportunities to trade goods native to their area like gold and ivory and yes, slaves. And as a result of this an African merchant class developed and villages began turning into cities and between 1000-1500 the Swahili urban commercial centers flourished. independent with its own king, so as a whole it wasn’t Islam became dominatied Trans-Saharan Routes These routes linked North Africa and the Mediterranean world with the interior of Africa, specifically, West Africa Places varied produced different goods and incentive for trade North africa made cloth glasswork books Southwest africa made grain crops yams Arabian Camel Long periods without water Kingdom of Mali Held monopoly of metal and horses Taxes on salt and copper Social hierarchy: merchants, under them were the military and religious folk, and under them were the peasants, and under all were the slaves.

Why did the Silk Road flourish under Mongol rule though?
@suraiyanishat66834 жыл бұрын
