If anyone needs notes or inspiration for their notes here's mine: Mongol Empire: Emerged in the 13th century, controlled the largest land-based empire in all of human history, left a very small cultural footprint- no new language, religion, or lasting civilizations GENGHIS KHAN: He and his mother became social outcasts, but soon forged alliances because of how he was Recognized as a chief among his growing followers- gained a reputation of violence and brutality, ruthlessness towards his enemies Incorporated his enemies into tribes rather than turning them into slaves or killing them GOAL: To expand his empire as much as he could 1st Expansion Empire: China (1209) Perpetrated his first attack which set in motion the expansion of the Mongol Empire Attacks were vicious Tactics: Grew without a blueprint -- had no actual plan was very spontaneous More people they conquered the more resources they had to keep conquering Organized his army to make them easy to control→a growing army who were fiercely loyal, if one soldier rebelled the whole unit would be murdered Allowed people to keep their religion as long as their devotion to the religion didn’t become the center of political opposition CHINA AND MONGOLS: Most difficult and lasted 70 yrs (1209-1279) Began in NC, focused on destruction and plunder at first but then changed its focus to accommodate the local pop. Ex: Allowed landowners to keep land as long as they pledged loyalty Resulted: Unification of China Confucian Scholars were convinced the Mongols were granted the Mandate of Heaven Mongols used existing systems of administration in China and taxation Yuan Dynasty- roads were improved, canals were built, scholars and artists were patronized- rule in China was brief (100 yrs) Mid 14th century forced out by factionalism, the plague, and numerous peasants rebellions PERSIAN AND MONGOLS: More abrupt, the Muslim Persians fell to Mongol attack Persians were disturbed that non-believers could conquer them so easily They slaughtered the Persians with a ferocity; “Every town and every village had been several times subjected to pillage and massacre…” In 1258, the sacking of Bhagdad alone, the Mongols put over 200,000 people to death Mongols were more transformed themselves Made use of the Persian administrative system Left Many Persian rulers in place Mongols who conquered Persia became Muslim End: Mongols gradually disappeared in Persia, assimilated into Persian society

before my final exam back in December, I binge watched all of the crash course videos in hopes to understand the content. I failed. Most of us failed and so our teacher curved it lol. I now have the AP test tomorrow and thanks to my discovery of Heimler's History I think I might pass. Crash course doesn't click in my head for some reason but I am so grateful for Heimler's History which I understand.

Notes for myself!! Mongols were pretty brutal when they conquered people emerged in the 13th century and controlled the largest land based empire ever -- very small cultural footprint Genghis Khan (Temujin) - born into a network of Mongolian tribes - family became social outcasts - forged alliances w all tribes - recognized as a chief - brutal and ruthless - incorporated his enemies into his own tribe Genghis Khan=Chinggis Khan when a leader has supreme power and an army , you expand Khan expanded into China --> fierce attacks - capture everyone, forts/walls destroyed, everyone would kneel down - Mongols grew w/o blueprint - more ppl conquered --> more resources Organization of army ⬆ than China Military units of 10,00, 1,000, and 10 - scattered people so they wouldn't rebel - loyal bc of fear on person rebels --> everyone dies Reputation of tolerance - secular empire China - conquest lasted from 1209-1279; destruction and plunder --> concerned with accommodating locals as they moved further in China -- UNIFICATION - taxes and established the Yuan Dynasty - roads improved, canals, scholars Persians - Abrupt, fell to attackers, completely disconcerting that they got conquered by non-believers - every town and village were subjected to massacre and pillage In Baghdad the Mongols put over 200,00k ppl to death Mongols influenced by Persians way more than vice versa Persian rulers were left in place Mongols became Muslim in Persia Mongols gradually disappeared in Persia

When looking at the AP Course Overview, there seems to be a section that focuses on technological and cultural interaction as continuities and changes. While this video is excellent for understanding the Mongols as a conquering and ruling people, I feel it lacks that specific section. Am I missing something? Otherwise, this is amazing!

my notes: Mongols Emerge in 1200s, few years controlled largest land based empire in human history Left very small cultural footprint on history Genghis Khan (Temujin) (Chinggis Khan - same guy) Born in 1000s into network of mongolian tribes that were fractured and at war with one another Khan and fam become social outcasts without a way to earn a living Personality helped him create personal alliances among all mongolian tribes Recognized as chief to followers Gain reputation of brutality with enemies Secured string of military victories Didn’t destory or enslave enemies, incorporated them into his own tribe 1206 tribal council recognized him as Genghis Khan, the ruler of newly unified mongol nation First expansion into China 1209 first attack Tactics for expanison Grew without a blueprint Conquered and more resources to conquer even more Odds not in their favor Outnumbered in China 100 to 1 and Chinese had advanced tech The Khan’s Order (organization of army) Military units of 10,000 1,000 100 and 10 Quickly and effectively control troops Conquered ppl joined to (but scattered to different units, so don’t rebel) Army v loyal to him bc feared him Policy, if 1 member of unit deserted, WHOLE unit massacred Religious tolerance Allowed ppl to keep their religion, if religon didn’t become center of political opposition Conquests China Most difficult and lasted 70 years (1209-1279) Began in N china, goal was to destory and plunder As moved, goal changed S china, want to accomodate local population Allow landowners to keep land if pledge loyalty Result unification of china Some confucians believe mongols have mandate of heaven Mongols fit well into chinese mold, bc used existing systems of administration and taxation Established Yuan Dynasty (100 years Roads improved, canals built, scholars and artists were patronized Kinda ruled like beneficent confucian leaders Forced out in mid-1300s by factionalism, plague, and many peasant rebellions Persians Abrupt, short, Muslim Persians fell to Mongol attacks Made Persians feel unsettled bc Mongols were not Christians Slaughtered Persians Sacking of Baghdad (1258) Mongols put over 200,000 ppl to death Mongols influenced by Persians Used Persian administrative system and left many Persian rulers in charge Mongols became muslim (didn’t happen in China) Mongols sort of disappeared gradually

notes: mongol empire: largest land empire in all of human history. still left a small carbon footprint in human history, such as how langauge didnt spread temujin (genghis khan) - born as a social outcasts. later became a chief among his followers. ruthless against his enemies and had many victories. became leader of the nation he first expanded into china. attacks were fierce, destoryed every fort and army there. how so strong?: they just went and conquered. the more people they conquered, the stronger they become. even though china had more advanced tech, it was the organization of the mongol army that led to their victories (10, 100, and 1000). people feared him. policy: threatening. submissive get spread, rebels experinced detrimental consequences to them and their families china: difficult to conquer become more concerned on accomodating the people as they reached into southern china. taxation yuan dynasty - roads are imrpoved, canals are built. only 100 years of rule persia: far more abrupt and easier to conquer nonbelievers of islam slaughtered persia, destoryed even town and village for years population decimation, puts thousands of people to death influenced the mongols, where some of them even became muslim assimilated into persian culture

Goryeo(korea) never surrendered to the Yuan Dynasty(Mongol Empire). It is unequal, but it has only signed a treaty of mutual friendship. The Goryeo and Yan Dynasty were influenced by each other, not unilaterally controlled. King Goryeo had the right to elect the Emperor of the Yuan Dynasty. War between Goryeo (Korea) and Mongolia 1st invasion: Date: August 1231-March 1232 30,000 Mongolian troops invaded. Goryeo succeeded in defending an important castle and bound half of the soldiers, but the capital was besieged, sending the royal family hostages and signing a peace treaty. 2nd invasion Date: August 1232-December 1232 Goryeo moved the palace to the island for war against Mongolia, and Mongolia invaded again. Mongolia could not properly occupy a single castle, and the commander-in-chief was killed in battle and retreated. 3rd invasion Date: July 1235-April 1239 When the Geum Dynasty fell in 1234, it attacked Goryeo. Mongolia lost several defeats, devastating Goryeo territory over four years and inflicting enormous damage. Eventually, in the winter of 1238, the Goryeo court proposed Ganghwa to Mongolia, and Mongolia also withdrew in the spring of 1239 on condition of Goryeo Gojong's entrance. But didn't fulfill the promise 4th invasion Date: July 1247-March 1248 Due to the short period, there was no significant damage, and the Mongolian emperor died and withdrew. 5th invasion Date: July 1253-January 1254 It came down to the central part of the Korean peninsula, but was withdrawn without capturing Chungju, an important adult. 6th invasion Date: July 1254-December 1254 The Mongolian army lost all three major siege battles and withdrew. However, the Mongol army plundered severely and captured 200,000 people, causing great damage. 7th Invasion-Mongolia's Amphibious Operation Date: September 1255-June 1256 The Mongolian army won one battle, but lost six battles and withdrew. 8th invasion Date: May 1257-October 1257 Mongolia lost two battles and withdrew when Goryeo promised friendship. 9th invasion Date: April 1258-March 1259 Mongolia lost two battles and withdrew when Goryeo promised friendship. 1259 Goryeo Prince meets and discusses with Kublai, and Goryeo and Mongolia conclude a peace agreement, although they are unequal. Mongolia invaded 9 times, but each time they were defeated, they knew it was impossible to conquer Goryeo. Mongolian emperor Kublai made six promises and said he would not interfere with Goryeo. The clothes and hats worn on the head do not need to be changed according to the customs of Goryeo Envoys are banned from anything other than those sent by the Yuan court. Return to the capital can be adjusted in time at Goryeojeong. The troops withdrew in the fall. All of the Official from Mongolia are withdrawn. Those who volunteered to stay in Mongolia are investigated and returned. After the discussion, Prince Goryeo asked Kublai to become son-in-law. Afterwards, the kings of Goryeo became son-in-law of Kublai and his descendants and had the right to elect the emperor. The Mongolian emperor was able to replace the son-in-law, King Goryeo, but due to Kublai's promise, he could not interfere with anything in Goryeo. Mongolia could not occupy Goryeo and only signed a peace treaty. The Mongol emperor was able to replace the king of Goryeo, but he could not easily replace the king of Goryeo, an important member of the imperial family.

Let's talk about moon cakes of the mid autumn festival or moon festival. People of the ming Dynasty drove the Mongolians out of Chinese soil by means of mooncakes.
