Hi Steve, you have an excellent video channel so I have subbed. That set up is really neat and tidy and for low power applications is ideal. I would like to point out a couple of things before people rush out and start changing all their AC motors on their equipment. Most treadmill motors range from 1hp or 745 watts up to 4hp or 2980 watts so that neat little controller won’t do. Also if, like me, you mainly work with metal you may be very disappointed if you convert machines like your drill press or lathe because of the torque factor. Here is a simplified example: If I have a 1hp treadmill motor and slow it down from 1500rpm to 150rpm I still only have 1hp of torque BUT if I reduce my 1hp AC motor via gears or pulleys from 1500rpm down to 150rpm then I have effectively increased the torque by a factor of 10 giving me the torque of a 10hp motor. Like a car going up a hill, when the load increase the engine wants to stall so we change down to a lower gear to keep going. The engine does not have any more power but the gears allow for an increase in torque. I know this is very simplistic but I hope it shows what I mean. However there is are a couple of ways to get around this by still using just one or two gears/ belts. I have found that the DC Motor Conversion does have a place in my workshop and that is on machines that have no speed adjustment like bench grinders, belt sanders, a ball mill and bandsaws as being able to slow down and speed up these tools to be very handy. I have seen posts on other videos of people complaining that the dc motors don’t have any torque at low speeds but I disagree, an electric motor develops maximum torque at 1rpm and stays at maximum torque right to it’s maximum speed but most people are trying to drill or machine heavy parts at low speed and that is where that gearing becomes very important. There is also the issue of inertia at higher speeds that is missing at low speeds. I hope I have not put anyone off this conversion but people need to be aware of the short falls. Thanks for your great videos, cheers Stuart 🇦🇺

Hi Stuart, Thanks..The actual video isn't about using this DC motor set up for converting a lathe, although I see you are addressing the comment above. The DC motor set-up that came installed on my Chinese Mini Lathe caused no end of problems. I have seen Chinese Mini Lathes converted over, using a treadmill motors. I think many people in the USA use them on their Harbour Freight Mini Lathes. I don't know how successful they are though particularly in prolonged or heavy duty use. I personally wouldn't choose to use one for driving a lathe or drill press. I found the best option is to convert a lathe over to 3 phase using a VFD. It maybe a little expensive at first, if one uses a new motor, but it sorts out all of the machine motor problems for good. I only use the treadmill motor for variable speed milling attachments like this one.....you may have seen it already. kzbin.info/www/bejne/j4DdamaqhaiSY9E The variable speed treadmill motor set up is ideal for this type of thing. Regards Steve

Thank you Steve for uploading this video. Just bought this very same motor and display - well impressed but think I need the same controller as you show here as I'm constructing a rotary welding positioner which we're looking for an ideal speed of 1 rpm to a maximum of 10 rpm so ideally need a more controllable, low speed bottom end... That's some serious reduction so would be happy to hear anyone's advise to achieve that.... Oh, don't say buy a Chinese positioner as they can't handle the current we're using......

Hi Jim, You could always make up an adapter to fit one of these planetary gearboxes. You can buy them in all different ratios. The drive pulls out the back so that you can mount them on an adapter to suit the end of a motor shaft, then re-insert to use. I have a a 5:1 ratio and that is the slowest. They also give fantastic high torque. Nema17 Planetary Gearbox Gear Motor -- goo.gl/MhxDmW

The DLM is too weak to run a treadmill motor properly. It works, but it hums and is only good for light duty sanders or similar projects, not anything that requires much force. You can pop it open and turn the potentiometer up to get closer to the listed values, but it's not going to be the same as the original treadmill guts unfortunately. I never bothered, because I wanted to try the original power supply to see what the difference was, and it was huge! I really couldn't see that DLM box working much better because of it's physical size alone. So I'll use it for something else down the road I'm sure... But it does work for sure, just depends on what you want to use it for. I used mine on an old beast of a lathe with double cone pulleys and a leather flat belt, and the DLM was humming and would only make that motor run on there at about 20% compared to hooking it up using the original power supply and controls for the treadmill. The original made no overworking and struggling humming sounds at all, and it spun that thing way faster than it was supposed to spin I'm pretty sure! Both struggled with the initial starting and spinning, but that lathe is over 100 years old and HUGE, which had a big 220v motor on it, but I can't read and into off of it unfortunatly, and I can't even find any info online about it... Anyway, I just wanted to let people know that I tried the DLM box from the video, and it worked, but only at a fraction of what the original treadmill could do with that 2hp motor of mine!

Hi, I do not understand much about the electric motors I just can not get my head around it all, does not matter how much I try, its like I have a mental block with the wiring stuff ,I think because there are so many types and voltage ,and so many different AC/ DC / and both if wired correct with converters single phase / 3 phase/ brushless / non brushless/ induction motors etc the list just goes on and on its so confusing, how on earth does anyone go about educating there self in there 50s who loves making machines but comes stuck when it comes to powering them, I built a big knife belt grinder and because I don`t have a clue on speed controlling a motor I am having to make a step down pully system that makes the machine even bigger, I have a great respect for people who have the ability to know what to do with electric motors, I do under stand slightly DC and AC motors function when watching vids But the wiring and working out the voltage voltages that`s where My head just goes off into space, And then we get told certain non brush motors can be used with speed reduction control but this is not good for the motor, And you here motors get converted to from DC brushless to AC where power goes off and on but the motor don`t sound correctly mind boggling

Measuring RPM of a motor like this with this type of speed controller ( one without a feedback loop from a motor) is pointless. The speed under load will change with load. With the right combination of load and power DC motors can turn much lower than 300 RPM. In contrast original treadmill controller is designed with a closed loop feedback so the motor spins at constant speed regardless of load. Therefore original controller is better for use in power tools and machines. They increase or decrease power as the load changes. The only downside is that as a safety feature you always have to start the motor at zero and dial the controller to desired speed. But then that speed is maintained by the controller under varying load, which is typical operating condition for machines and power tools.
