Slower cloth and clay balls were the standard back then, not to mention cue-tips that weren't multi-layered. Draw was much harder back then (which is why you hear a lot of old-school players say to "whip", "jab" or "punch" the cueball low) and sidespin was much more elusive than today, so high english was much more used.

The table they're playing on says 21, and I can hear many other games being played. Leads me to believe they are at a real pool hall

Fun game. I started playing pool 8-ball game but now I know this game will help me learn how to control cue ball and pocketing balls.

Do you know the 3 shots you can make before the safe break. You can bank the corner ball and you can cross bank the other corner ball if your under the rack if that makes sense.

No one really play's this where I play but I love playing this as a warm up for 8 ball. It really works on breaking up clusters and potting.

Tougher to control speed and get in line for the next ball. He went off line and had to get creative for the last ball and DID NOT get inside the break ball.

Adding a little to Kris's explanation of the rules of "straight pool" or "rotation": on the initial break, you have to drive two balls to the rail, as well as the cue ball. If you fail to do this, you lose two points. You only have to call ball and pocket. In all cases, either the object ball must be pocketed, or either the cue or object ball must hit the rail (which matters when calling a safety). If not, it's a foul, costing a point. If you scratch, that's also a one-point deduction. Balls pocked in a foul situation are replaced on the spot, or as close to the spot as possible along a line towards the foot of the table.

Nice to see some straight pool! It may not be the most immediately enjoyable game to watch on TV, but it sure is a lot more fun to play than the much-too-popular 9-ball. :)

Am I ok, if I say this is the best pool playing modality?
@SnareBuff
@SnareBuff 12 жыл бұрын
You start off with all 15 balls racked. The break is a safe break. You hit the end ball and bring the cueball back to the end rail for no return shot. Balls are shot in no particular order. Call your shot only if it's something that isn't obvious. Each ball is 1 point. After 14 balls are pocketed, they're re-racked without the 15th ball being included in the rack. You then shoot the remaining ball and carom into the rack to break them open. Play to a certain amount of points, and that's it.

What is Mr. Reyes highest run in straight pool? I know he has not matched the run of 526 done by the great Willie Mosconi the official BCA world record.

You can't organize a World tournament in a noisy, small bar. Look how snooker matches are organized. Quiet is a must.

All the people complaining about Bob, he wasn't that bad. They missed about the same amount of shots actually. But Bob has a beautiful stroke. Text book. Only thing is, and this is what caused a lot of his misses, he does not know how to properly apply side spin to the cue ball.

The camera and sound is so shitty. Why can't we watch 14.1 pool matches without feeling like we are in someone's kitchen? Isn't this supposed to be a major tournament. How hard is it to get a good camera and audio equipment?

its a call your shot game and efren says safe before he gets down to shoot.. causing the ball to be brought back up onto the table and giving bob a full break, which is a disadvantage in 14.1

Don't forget in those days often they played on 8 foot tables, and the pockets where at least an inch wider. Also the cloth on the cusions was thicker, so a lot of balls that hit the cushion before the pocket still went in. If you want I can give you an example where Efren misses a long pot in this video and another video where Mosconi shoots a similar shot even more off line and still pockets it.

For better or worse Efren plays to a fast tempo...a quick rythm...sometimes a split second decision followed by an equally quick yet confident shot. His play is loose and always at ease. His natural ability to envision and execute shots is sometimes amazing. Treffeisen is slow and deliberate. Tries to be precise but is just that much off. Very slow tempo and takes wayyy tooo longggg. His style of play put me to sleep and I'm sure drove Reyes nuts.
