In the 90s, my license was suspended without me ever being informed. It happened because I switched insurance companies, and being insurance companies, the old one informed the state that I was driving with no insurance after I didn't renew my policy. I had insurance! Months later I got pulled over in a speed trap, and then I found out that my license had been suspended. I went in front of a very nasty judge who tried to throw me out of his courtroom for wearing a t-shirt and jeans, but fortunately the image on the shirt was a bald eagle and American flag, and I dared him to do it. He decided that I was guilty despite my proof of insurance, so I talked to the court attorney on the side, who also hated the judge, and the attorney got him to reverse his bad decision. That judge got nailed for corruption a few years later, the speed trap still exists, and the law here is still basically a means criminals use to extort the people. I hate it.

A minute later he said "Wait, you paid this off in 1996", then I heard him press some keys and he added "It's all cleared up now." I shouldn't have been so quick to judge as something very similar happened to me back in 1980 when I was 17. I let this fella from Finland drive my 1970 GTO. This guy was a friend of my then high school GF whom she had met as an exchange student to Finland. I never wanted to let him drive my car, but my GF and this guy convinced me it would be fine. I let him drive down town to the gas station to fill up and we were going to cruise around. He asked to continue driving my car. He offered to pay for all of the gas! So I agreed. That idiot, coming out of the gas station decided to drop the clutch at 4000 rpms, he nearly hit a car. Spun a complete 180*...and it was all in front of Deputy. Of course we got pulled over. The fella from Finland had an International Driver's License. The cop gave me the ticket for Reckless Driving and No Insurance. I had insurance, I just didn't have the 'Proof.' I went to court to fight the ticket. The Reckless was dismissed. I got a $25 fine for not carrying Proof of Insurance. I paid it immediately. In 1983, I moved to California to go to college. Turned in my Nevada License. 25 years later, I was working as a heavy equipment mechanic for the County of Santa Clara, raising two daughters when I got called in and suspended from work for having a suspended license out of Nevada. I had to go to Nevada to find out why. It was because "I never paid the $25 fine for No Proof of insurance." I could repay the fine now, or go to back to court if I carried proof the fine was paid. Who would carry after 25 years?! I paid the fine. Got the paperwork my license was clear in Nevada. Spent all day at the California DMV to get a temporary license. Sure enough, when the temporary license expired, I was suspended again from my job again because Nevada continued to show I had this outstanding $25 fine, even though I clearly now had the paperwork it was cleared up. It took 6 hours with a manager of a local DMV, someone in Sacramento, and someone in Nv. to finally clear my license over a then $25 fine that happened when I was a kid. Almost cost me my house if I lost my job. I never did get the money back for the 2 weeks I was suspended. At 3 weeks, per my union contract, I would have been terminated on the spot.

This is absolutely bizarre. Here in Queensland, Australia if you don't pay some sort of Government fee and you go into debt, it gets referred to SPER (State Penalties Enforcement Registry), where if you fail to pay a fine etc, they have the power to issue an enforcement order (pay now or we'll take it further), be jailed (absolute last resort), or more commonly, take it out of your wages/income, you certainly don't lose your driving licence unless you've committed a driving offence and that's only depends on the type of driving offence (some driving offences earn an automatic suspension) and/or how many points you have remaining. Here also, child support is a Federal matter, not a state issue which is driving, even so, if you fail to pay, Centrelink can then take the money out of your income or undertake litigation, among several other methods, none of which is related to a driving licence. America is a weird country!

I once got a ticket for running a red, which I did NOT do. The officer wrote the WRONG date on the ticket, I show up to court, they said my date was the day before. Then they said they'll send me a new court date in the mail. So I wait, I call back in 1.5 weeks to see why I haven't gotten a new date. They said I missed the 2nd date already also so my license got suspended. It's complete BS...all cause an officer lied and then wrote the wrong date on the ticket. And like Steve said at the beginning of the video, I just can't stop driving. I live in a suburb with almost no public transportation. The court process was soooooooooo slow, it took 1.5 years to take care of it, and of course in that time I got a couple driving while suspended. Eventually, the DA was smart enough to see I had zero other infractions in the prior 15 years combined with the RETURNED MAIL showing that they sent the notice of the 2nd court date to the wrong address, she reduced everything down to driving without license in possession and small fines. Oh, and the first charge of running a red was also reduced to some non-moving violation that I can't remember. And for the record, since that day I've put dashcams in my cars and have used them to PROVE the police were wrong in subsequent police encounters. Once for another running a red light (it was green the entire time I went thru the intersection) and another time for speeding, which I was NOT. Upon showing the video evidence, both charges were dismissed.

The "reinstatement fees" are what kills most people in getting the suspension removal finalized. I know in my State they charge $250 per suspension and if you have more than one that adds up fast. I have to my knowledge 4 suspensions on my license and that totals $1,000 minimum that I have to shell out just to get the 4 suspensions lifted. Then add to that since it has been so long I would have to also pay to have a temporary permit, take a drivers exam, pay to get the license once the drivers exam is passed and that adds another $200-300 to it all. Then if you have any insurance liens against your license or any other financial lien against your license that also has to be paid in full before any of the fun stuff to get it back. That can add up to thousands depending on the liens tacked onto your license. In my case I figured that at a minimum I would need at least $3,500 just to get the suspensions lifted. Who has that kind of scratch just laying around to fork over to everyone that demands you fork it over to them or you can't drive? Even if payment arrangements are made it would still take me at least 3 years to get it all paid off and to get that paid off I need a job and transportation to get to that job and since there is no "public transportation" in my neck of the woods I would be either driving someone else's vehicle to get to and from work or I would be end up not having anything left of my paycheck forking over cash to cover the taxi services each day twice a day. At minimum it would cost me one way to get to a job $60. Then let's not forget that if you are driving someone else's vehicle and you get pulled over while driving without a license they can and in most cases do impound the vehicle adding more money to the fray of things. I see this entire driver's license ordeal beyond having a license for commercial activity on the roadways as nothing more than a huge extortion racket.

The police man said if I could get someone to come in pick up my bike he would just give me a ticket . the next day went down and got my new drivers license . I still had to pay later on my $115 dollars for driving on a suspended license . But somebody did not notify someone somewhere but was not worth fighting over $115 .

In Louisiana, if you switch companies, the insurance Company has to report to the state that you canceled on them, then the State suspends your drivers license. Now, you have a new company, insurance never lapsed now. But there is no requirement that the new insurance company you've got has to notify the state and inform them of you having car insurance with them. I was caught up in this year's ago. I was facing a huge fine, for driving with a suspended license. I was stopped late one night and was ordered to court to go in front of the judge. I had to go back for two years, and find all of those proof of insurance cards, good thing I keep records. And prove what actually happened. Now, they still stick you with court costs, fees. As a Michigan resident, every time you have a civil infraction that involves a motor vehicle and even in the case of a suspended driver's license when you go to court and you satisfy the court you receive a clearance. The clearance fee in Michigan is $50 they do not automatically do this you have to pay the $50 then they will electronically submit it but they give you a piece of paper to take the Secretary of State to verify that you have indeed one paid the $50 for the clearance fee and you took care of the ticket. It's not rocket science. He basically dropped the ball. He could feign ignorance but that only get you so far. And at the moment he's the poster child for ignorance! Sad to say. Well at least it's not California. California has a penalty assessment that goes back to the day you started driving. They will tack up all the fees you have ever encouraged since you've been driving on your latest ticket 70% of the fines and costs that you have already paid in the past will be tacked onto your new ticket. If you pause to think, "court costs" is a nonsensical idea. Assume on a random court day there is nobody with a case to be tried. Does the judge not get paid? Do the clerks go without? Of course not, they aren't paid by the case. Court costs are the dame whether there are 200 csses on the docket or zero.

He's in court for driving on a Suspended License - so, that had to have been recently. If the suspension was in error, because he paid his child support long ago, why didn't he look into it before the court hearing? Then, instead of looking up guiltily to the ceiling of his car, he could have stopped the judge: "Your honor, I had already taken care of that." I've seen videos of this Judge, he would have listened.
@Hevach8 ай бұрын
It wasn't suspended in error, but the suspension was overturned by a judge in 2022. The law he lost it under was replaced in 2021 and license restoration was supposed to be automatic when it went into effect but most people had to take some extra steps and go to court. KZbin frequently deletes posts with links but the website Published Reporter has the court documents showing his license was restored, the state just ignored that. He tried twice to explain this, but the state attorney interrupted him claiming to have the correct information. This judge is fair but in this case he didn't listen because the state lied to him, and we'll have to wait until the 5th to see how it plays out from there.

It seems counter productive to pull someone's license for falling behind on child support. This happens in NJ too. I don't think MOST people just don't not pay deliberately. They may have lost a job or be making less money than when the original court ordered amount was set. In NJ to get that changed (at least in the past) you had to get a lawyer and go to court. How do you afford that? If you pull someone's license because they can't meet the court ordered amount - how are they supposed to get to work to make money to pay any amount? It can turn into a revolving door. You get picked up, jailed for about 2 or 3 months, now they want you to pay the amount ordered PLUS extra money to make up for the back money owed. They've lost their job and have to find another - they are forever playing catch up. This happened to someone I knew. His ex-wife (friendly divorce) even went to court with him. She told the judge she didn't want her ex in jail because he was a good father to their autistic son. Putting the father in jail repeatedly caused the boy more anxiety. The judge said they could do NOTHING. The father would have to get a lawyer, go to a different court and explain he no longer made the money he used to make and needed the child support reduced to what he could reasonably pay. This all is completely illogical. If you can't afford $100 a week (for example) how can you afford $150? IT DOESN'T MAKE SENSE!!!! You have no idea how many people get caught up in this travesty. Not all men are deadbeat dads.

I think he absolutely could have planned better for this court hearing so that he wasn't driving when it happened. After hearing the situation I absolutely have more sympathy, but I think some better planning could have been done. It's still a ridiculous situation to be in for him though with even having the suspended license. I remember when my license got suspended because I dropped out of school (long story involving moving to a state with different requirements than I had previously which would have forced me to take an extra year of highschool) then a couple of months later when I got my GED we did all of the paperwork and even went to the DMV to get it unsuspended. I get a letter a couple of months after that stating that they were suspending my license AGAIN until I PHYSICALLY APPEAR at the DMV to sign a document THEY FORGOT to have me sign. I don't know how they would have expected me to get there legally if I didn't have my mother to drive me since there's no real public transportation there and this was before Uber/Lyft. I guess maybe a taxi, but that's expensive for a mistake that wasn't mine.
@44hawk288 ай бұрын
I'd like to point out that you at least twice mentioned exactly why they will automatically suspend your license for reasons that have nothing to do with driving and actually are antithetical to the purpose for which they're suspending your license, if you're not paying child support, putting somebody out of work by not allowing them to drive to work is not going to help the issue. The other problem is is that the reason that they will automatically suspend your license, but won't automatically unsuspended, is precisely because they're allowed to charge a reinstatement fee. That is a long way around the barn for theft by conversion.

About 10 years ago, I was leaving New York State and moving To another state. Just about two or three days before I was to leave I got a notice in the mail that my license would be suspended unless I paid some parking tickets. The thing is, I had bought a new car and got it registered and I was not allowed to get it registered without paying every single ticket that I had just to get it registered. So when an old ticket came up from my previous car, I couldn’t understand how it hadn’t been taken care of. Thankfully, the judge understood and said that it was within the system and had actually reached The DMV prior to me paying the tickets and getting my new car registered. The judge was very nice. Saw that I had tried to do my due diligence and just released the ticket and said have a good move. It was great.

The problem is that people demand a lot more from government than they are willing to pay for. It's more politically convenient to shift operating costs onto individuals, in the form of fines and usage fees, than to raise taxes a few dollars more per capita.

My license was suspended at the age of 15 before I could even get a license because I took my parents car in the middle of the night and ran a stop sign and got in a high speed chase. Now at the time I had a learners permit. About a yr later the judge in the case told me I could get my license so I went down to the tag agency to get my license upgraded from a learners permit to a drivers license. Now my license was still suspended be was it was suspended by the state and I had to go pay a fee to get it reinstated. And they didn't say anything about it when I got it upgraded from a permit to a license. So I was just out driving around for 6 months with a suspended license till I got pulled over one day and arrested for driving on a suspended license

Suspending a driving license for something unrelated to driving seems like nonsense. Doubly so for something like not paying child support where you're almost certainly going to need to drive to be able to pay it.
