There is another side to that coin. A dealer has to service it even if the manufacturer goes under. Remember 2008? Ford was the only one of the big three who didn't need a taxpayer bailout. People who had just bought a new car and wanted its warranty honored would be screwed because GM could simply close those dealers. You wouldn't have anywhere to get your warranty work done. We live in Michigan, we have purchased a Model 3 in 2019 (before Tesla opened their service center) and then a Model Y in 2020 (after a semi truck decided to total our Model 3). At any rate, purchasing a Tesla in Michigan really isn't that much of an inconvenience, either way. Folks that haven't went through the process have this idea that, for Michigan residents, it is such an inconvenience that it isn't worth the purchase. Nothing could be further from the truth. We drove 2.5 hrs to Chicago, IL in 2019, and 2.5 hrs to Clarkston, MI to pick up our cars. Tesla was very good at guiding us through the process, and it was easy. The dealership model needs blown up. Won't happen soon.
@jwenting4 жыл бұрын
it was blown up in the Netherlands several years ago. Though we had the exact opposite of the Michigan system, here the ONLY companies allowed to sell new cars were the manufacturers and importers, so they ran all the dealerships, often as exclusive franchises. Result was there'd only be a very few dealerships per brand (or group of brands) to ensure they'd not have to compete with one another. Took decades of political pressuring and lawsuits before that system was changed and companies were allowed to become dealerships for more than one brand (which is what happened here). Most dealerships are still owned franchises of the manufacturers (similar to a KFC or McDonalds) but there now is some competition and service levels have gone up.
@donm22554 жыл бұрын
Tesla is a very disruptive company. The most likely outcome is the dealerships go belly up because the cars makers that supply them go belly up. It may happen a lot sooner than we realize. You don't have to erode too much of the big three's market share to make them unprofitable. The only question is how fast can Tesla build new factories.
@donm22554 жыл бұрын
@Ben Bla There was a time when people thought transportation involved a horse and trains were powered with steam. At some point a disruptive technology comes along and changes everything. In ten years no one will be making cars with an ICE. The cheapest solution always wins. Cars replaced the horse and buggy. Diesel electric replaced steam locomotives. And EV's will replace gas cars. Enough people will buy the less expensive EV's to make manufacturing ICE cars unprofitable. This process won't take long. You need to watch some of Tony Seba's youtube videos on disruptive technologies. You'll have a much better idea of the change coming in the next decade.

Figure out exactly what I wanted, used search filters to find it, and ordered it, took less than an hour to find it and complete all "paperwork". 2 days later it was delivered to my house to start my 7 day "test drive", so had plenty of time to check the car over myself, and get my mechanic to go through it, with no salesman gibbering in my ear telling me how great the car is. It took a few days, but I decided I didn't like it, so exchanged it for a different car. Que start of next 7 day "test drive" and check out. 2nd time was the charm, less than 60 days later I got the new license plates and registration in the mail. The only person I had to deal with were the delivery/pick up drivers, just to show my license and insurance, and sign for the delivery. Best car buying experience of my life, and I've had quite a few. My last new vehicle purchase was a 2013 F-150, it was a nearly all day ordeal of test drives and running the gauntlet of salesman, sales manager, financial guy, accessories chic, etc., all to buy a truck that was already on the lot, and that I had my own financing lined up for. And I didn't even get to pick it up for 3 days...🙄 Assuming the final product resembles the prototype, my next new vehicle purchase will be a Cybertruck.

Steve, this reminds me of a couple questions I've had about government and/or the courts shaping policy that benefits corporations at the expense of the consumer: 1. Cable companies. I've heard cable companies don't encroach on one another's areas to avoid price wars driving down prices, but I've also heard that local governments award exclusive contracts that only allow one major cable company in their jurisdiction. Which is true, or are they both? 2. The growing reach of the arbitration clause. Over the past couple years, I've received new agreements with arbitration clauses from the bank and two credit unions where I have money. All three have instructions describing how to decline, which involve you notifying them in writing within a specific amount of time. When notifying them in writing, I asked all 3 for confirmation and received none from any of them. I'm guessing that if anything happens where I have to litigate, they will have no record that I declined. First, how is the legal system being allowed to be stripped of the power to go to court? Second, how are these anti-consumer requirements (examples: a closing window of opportunity to decline, declining by snail mail) still a thing in the age of the internet? It feels like all the banks suddenly decided that they shouldn't be able to be sued, so those who can't follow their specific rules (most likely the majority of their customers) get to go through arbitration slanted in the bank's favor if said bank mishandles their money.

Having a little more in depth personal experience here , I will say not having dealerships has kept tesla exclusive and is part of how they are fighting right to repair, tesla vehicles are some of the hardest to fix and most expensive cars out there. Not because of technology but because they don't allow their testing devices and information outside of their own control. The reality is that dealerships make their money on repairs and insurance scams at the end of the sale , with some income from getting the loans done. Nebraska is somewhat similar so my model 3 came through Kansas City and was delivered to my driveway. Easiest car purchase ever. My prior purchase was 5 years prior at a Ford dealer. They promised me a 1000 dollar cash back finance deal, strung the process out on a weeknight evening when I was tired, claimed to have saved me money by changing the financing at the last minute to a lower rate. What they didn’t say is they took back the $1000! which I didn’t realize until later and then it’s too late. I hate car dealers because I’ve had bad experiences more often than good ones. I did have a good experience in 2009 when I bought a new Prius. First dealer jerked me around and tried to talk me into a car I didn’t want and had to go to the manager to get my deposit back. Second dealer found a car just like what I asked for in a couple weeks where the first took months. We agreed on a price and I got my own financing at my credit union. Dealer called me a week before delivery to say Toyota had just started a $1000 back deal on Priuses and did I mind paying $1000 less! I said I didn’t mind. Then some time later I called the day before going to sign and pick up the car and said I know we agreed on X dollars price but what’s the real total with fees and such so I can pick up the check from the credit union. The salesman started laughing! I was dumbstruck. He said you haven’t bought from us before have you? No. The price we agreed to is the final price, nothing else! I had never had that happen before and I got my first car in 1977.! Until Tesla.... I will admit that pressing that “Buy Now” button on a $40000.00 purchase was scary and surreal! BTW, I love my Tesla. It’s not perfect but neither was my Prius and I drove it for 237000 miles to save up for my Tesla. A friend now owns my old Prius and loves it too. A happy ending.

I have followed this from the start. My opinion has completely changed due to the actions of the manufacturers and their dealers. One by one small dealers are forced to remodel or rebuild these cookie cutter facilities or give up the franchise. Most of the time they can't afford it and a big corporate dealer group comes in. My town used to have 3 good, local dealers. Now we have none. A grand rapids corporation came in and built the sterilized dealerships the manufacturers wanted in the next town over. To add insult the former dealer owners had to go work there as salesmen in their 50s to have a job. If Tesla is dealing fairly and taking care of their customers that's all that matters because the franchise dealer model of the big 3 has destroyed families and cities. This is without mentioning the 2009 bankruptcy dealer dumps they did.
