Hubcap game is great! No one but Steve has ever provided so much good information on such a small but important part of the automobile. I have a hubcap collection of my own and knowing what they are from is very important.. I have attended many car shows and almost every time there is at least one vehicle with the wrong model year hubcaps on its wheels.. keep up the good work Steve!

YAY!!!! A new "Hubcap Game"! Can you imagine how many jobs were created just for the manufacture of hub caps? The '88 Impala Cop cars used a wheel cover very similar to that '74 unit.

The GM wire caps were ink stamped “ Norris Industries” early versions like the one you showed had a fixed emblem, later ones had a removable clip in emblem that hid a puzzle bolt theft deterrent device .

@@jeffclark2725 Yes, ITT and Norris Industries were two of those manufacturers, especially for GM. I want to say it was "Art Deco" (if I remember the name right) Corporation at one time in the early years and ITT or Norris bought them out off the top of my head.

Hello Google User GP, your insights are very helpful and identify you as an "insider" with the "third eye" only industry insiders can know. I've been a professional observer / reporter since my first writing gig at Chrysler Power magazine in 1991 up to the present days as one of the Barrett-Jackson TV broadcast reporters. In another life, I'd be a real insider, perhaps trading places with Tom Hoover at Chrysler or maybe Bill Mitchell at GM design. Then again, maybe working for one of the many, many Detroit supplier companies would offer many fascinating insights. My only insider contacts are guys like Mark Trostle and Mark Malmstead and Tim Kuniskis at Dodge who employ me at times as a video / car show spokesperson. But when I show up at their locations anything "future" is covered or moved away before I arrive. I hosted a bunch of show-and-tell videos for Dodge's new Direct Connection parts program about a year ago and saw some fascinating sights - a workshop filled with Challenger Hellcats and 392's all up on lifts getting test equipment installed / removed. I was told "wander and look (between video set ups) but DON'T TAKE ANY PICTURES WITH YOUR PHONE". I replied "I want to be invited back, you got it!". I filled my memory...but not my phone camera. A shame really. A similar thing happened at the old GM Desert Proving Grounds in Mesa, AZ where I was assigned by Hot Rod magazine to follow along as the Hot Rod / Gumout 1966 Chevelle Give Away car was being built by the DPG staff - led by DPG honcho Scott Leon. He told me "look all you like but don't take a single photo I don't approve of first". Understood and obeyed. I saw pre-production Chevy Colorado pickups waaaay back when their odd rear-slant fender lines were like UFO details. And I was invited to Ford's Flat Rock Mustang / Mazda assembly line to watch Shelby GT500's get their stripes applied on a niche line. We were there for Speed Channel and the only cameras allowed to function were the Speed Channel video team. I was the host but my phone remained in my bag. Bummer. But the sight of Mazda MX5's and Mustangs interspersed along the same line was a shock. Auto-Alliance at work! Anyhoo, to us "outsiders" the knowledge that hubcaps, seats, urethane facias and many, many other sub-assemblies are not manufactured by the carmaker often comes as a surprise. These ties are lost especially after a car has become worn out and abandoned to the junkyard. So much info hiding in plain sight, so little access to it. Anyhoo, Thanks again for writing and commenting. -Steve Magnante

I enjoy the hubcap game. Working at a tire shop while in high school, I must have removed and installed thousands of these things. Don't recall any complaints about the wheel covers I installed flying off, but there were other workers that weren't so fortunate. Some were quite persnickety to install correctly.

As noted by others Norris Industries and ITT were often trim and hubcap suppliers to GM and others. Back then these were companies that had a lot of divisions, industries and diversity of products. Back in the day, it was always thought of that hubcaps were also good for keeping the lug nuts dry and free from rust and leaving them exposed could mean a snapped lug stud down the road. Also, cars without wheel covers/hubcaps always looked like they were hoopties and not well cared for. Mr. Magnante needs to set up a "Go Fund Me" page so that he can finance copies of the "Hollander Wheel and Wheel Cover" interchange guide. That would make his "Hubcap Game" a breeze. LOL.

I remember we had a 1981 Oldsmobile Cutlas Brougham that had those wire basket hubcaps and even though they were fake, I think they actually looked good. I remember also, Dad replaced the white wall tires that came on the car with some black wall tires to give the car a sportier look.
@googleusergp

Or to cheap out (back then) and not buy whitewalls (which were more expensive to replace). Now cars have black wall tires and white walls would look out of place.

Hello Roller Dragon, I spent decades watching these things spin by in traffic since I was a 5 year old kid (that woulda been 1969). Somehow this stuff just gets to be ingrained. That said, if I had to do a "wheel game" based on identifying the aluminum wheel designs seen on cars from the 2000 to 2022 period, I'd really struggle with at least half of them. So many wheels....Thanks for watching and writing, Steve Magnante
