Just as with license plates hubcaps are very cool and worthy of display on the garage wall but even more so. Hubcaps are often great works of art. I wouldn't collect them myself though, just in case someone out there is looking for that exact hubcap to finish off their restoration. I think that Pontiac one was from a Fiero. The domed caps kinda made it look like air was leaking out of the tire and pushing the cap off. Those Aspens and Volares of the late 70s were unbelievably crappy. It's nice to know that my OCD isn't just peculiar to me. I can't go to the grocery store without arranging my items in a specific order to check out. It makes it easier to look at the receipt, at least that's what I tell myself. Thanks for the info and entertainment. We love ya Steve.

I am still enjoying the Hubcap game. I am not much younger than you Steve, and remember these hubcaps well from back in the day too. I once found a Caddy hubcap identical to the last one in a ditch as a kid. Think I sold it at a swap meet awhile later for $20 and thought I was rolling in dough!

Another 'exciting episode' of the HCG ! Seeing the '58 Plymouth wheel cover reminded me of a good friend and fellow old car lover, Jim. He was 25 years older than me and loved the '57 Plymouth wheel covers.They were wildly popular at the time and were often subject to theft. Owners would mark them on the inside with their names to deter thieves and to aid in their recovery. He had several sets in his garage and would still put them on anything that had 14" wheels. They were,as he liked to say, "The cats' ass ! "

Sold my Cragar SS wheels and BFG tires to a long time friend a couple weeks back. I swore I had a couple Stainless Dodge dog dish caps that were in a wooden crate buried in the shed where the wheels were. No dog dishes, no idea what I did with them, but I found a full wheel cover for an SS something. Thanks to Dr Google, 1964 Impala SS. That will go on my mancave wheel instead of the Dodge hubcap..... unless I can remember where I put them.

No that is a Pontiac “A” body front wheel drive 6000. Nice to see Katie is friendly and joining the episode. Dodge Chargers also had those. Both of my parents’ Chargers (1972 and 1974) had them. Yes that is a part number or date code tag. That looks like a Chevy Nova dog dish from about 1973 and up. Some year Camaros also used it. I have a set of three that a friend gave me along with some GM OBS parts and a 1968 Sears air compressor. In my friend's case, they were on a 1976 Nova that he had.

Hello Google User GP, ding-ding-ding-ding!!! (game show sound effect)...You Won! Correct you are about that "bland face, no-name" aluminum hub cap that stumped me in the moment. Yep, its from a mid-late 1970's F or X body. Now that you mention it, my mind's eye remembers them from 1976 Chevy Nova 9C1 cop package cars mounted to white steel wheels. Also I can conjure basic 6-banger Camaros from the same era wearing them. I can recall seeing them on a red Camaro six banger with matched red steel wheels surrounding the semi-shiny aluminum hub cap. Sort of a cool look to my eye. Thanks again for watching and providing thoughtful, accurate commentary. -Steve Magnante

@@SteveMagnante Sure. I have a set of three up on Ebay and Craigslist. My friend somehow had only three of them. He moved to FL when he retired and cleaned out his garage and gave the contents to me. There were some treasures in there. We agreed to split the profits of any sales and so far, we've done pretty good. My friend isn't computer and internet savvy, so he left the legwork of getting them photographed and listed online to me. The "bonus" was the free 1968 Sears air compressor and any NOS parts I found in the stash that fit my cars (a few do). The rest I have up for sale. Those hubcaps should fit: 1973 to 1979 Chevrolet Nova 76-77 Chevrolet Malibu 76-85 Chevrolet Camaro 78-83 Chevrolet Malibu

How about a wheel game like the hubcap game?
@SteveMagnante
@SteveMagnante Жыл бұрын
Hello Bill Manzke, I agree that a Wheel Game would be fun and informative. And Bernardston Auto Wrecking does have many, many large piles of wheels and tires laying about. The only hassle is how large and cumbersome most wheels actually are. By contrast, hubcaps are light and make great Frisbees / UFO hoax photo bait at the end of the day. Also, though there are many cool wheels out in those piles, most are plain-Jane / generic steelies. These are about 80-percent if what I see. The hassle here is the need to DIG DOWN forcibly in these huge wheel piles to find the "gems". Otherwise I fear the parade of bland black-painted steelies with an occasional cool wheel might get tedious. Not saying "never" to a Wheel Game, just maybe. Thanks again for writing. -Steve Magnante

Am curious if you answer these, when I was a kid we had a 1969 Plymouth Fury III ex state patrol interceptor. Had fairly generic small hubcaps saying Plymouth. A few years later we upgraded to a 1973 Dodge Polera with the exact same caps saying dodge division with holes about an inch apart. Did the holes have a purpose? BTW both cars were built to run!
@throckmorton8477
@throckmorton8477 Жыл бұрын
The reason I heard was the holes allowed heat to escape from the hub/wheel bearings. The highway patrol cars being used almost exclusively on the interstates or state routes. But who knows, as the saying goes, "Never let the truth get in the way of a good story! " 😁
@SteveMagnante
@SteveMagnante Жыл бұрын
Hello Charles Overturf, Lucky You for having personal experience with those great Plymouth Police Pursuits! Yes, the "corporate hub cap" gained 18 small diameter holes in 1974. The point was to allow whatever heat was trapped inside the closed caps to escape. I can't imagine this had much of an impact on wheel bearing life or brake fade resistance, but it does give those "fleet hub caps" a mean, no-nonsense vibe. These 18-hole hubcaps were never put on "civilian" cars (they retained the solid face but used the same stamping), but were common on Taxis and other Fleet-Package vehicles as well as police interceptors. The details, the details! Thanks again for writing. -Steve Magnante

Hello Stevei b, today is Monday, 12-12-22 as I write this and yes there was a light snow last night. If it is gone by later this week, we will shoot more Junkyard Crawl videos. BUT if the cars are not clearly visible due to snow coverage, I'd rather wait until they are and shoot videos then. The hassle with snow is how it covers up details and / or forces me to dig them out before we shoot. Fingers get cold! But what will we do if the cars are too covered to see and shoot? Fear not, we have a stash or pre-recorded Junkyard Crawl videos made just for those rare days. And these videos are from a fresh junkyard with many, many weird old vehicles! You'll like them. Until then, "pray for sunshine". Thanks again for watching and writing. -Steve Magnante

Hello Scott Preble, OK so maybe Kaiser-Jeep got a little crude on the front caps for 4x4 applications? I guess I'm too ":Big Three Blind" where most everything is finished and tidy. That wasn't about putting quality first, rather, this "perfection" was baked into the manufacturing process to ELIMINATE hands-on manual effort by a finisher. Those guys were UNION MEMBERS and needed to get paid for putting hands on parts. But maybe Jeep held a lower standard of execution and let the raw edges show versus putting a rolled lip into the edge after the punch press comes down to knock out the hole for the 4x4 hub. Just a guess. I like how all of this Junkyard Detective Work is constantly evolving and knowledge is gained in steps. Thanks for contributing your testimony to the fact Jeep "got medieval" on making those hub holes! -Steve Magnante

Hello NeshPro, Thanks for your support of Bernardston Auto Wrecking. You are guaranteed to have "the most gawked at car at the car show" - especially in rust-free Texas!!! I will surely trigger lots of "why buy a rusty car?" comments to which you can reply..."why NOT? AND they are MUCH LESS COSTLY than any rust-free core could ever be!" Right? As for the hubcaps for your Silent Malibu, I know we did feature a few of the BASE small diameter hub caps as used on 1966 / 1967 Chevy II / Novas and (I think) base level Chevelle 300's in your model year. There are at least 2 I've pulled out of the Magic Hubcap Van so far and I'd bet there might be a full set of 4 after some digging inside. That is, IF you want the BASE hub caps and not something more flashy. I would say that these "poor boy" hub caps would look pretty mean and nasty popped into the center of a 15x8 inch steel wheel at each corner of the car. Less can be so much more! OK, Thanks Again for watching and more so for supporting Bernardston Auto Wrecking with your purchase of The Silent Malibu! -Steve Magnante
