Thanks Steve, This is a timely reminder of those 1970s days when long-hooded, mid-priced, personal luxury coupes like the Monte Carlo, Grand Prix, Cougar and Cordoba ruled the roadways. There were so many styles of car at that time. This class sent a slightly different message than an ordinary two door sedan or coupe. Gosh, I miss cars😉

The reason they said that is only because of the wheelbase being the same. The frames were definitely not the same, though. Can you imagine a Chevelle wagon with the front bumper mounted way out ahead of the grille?

Mine was buckskin with landau roof, swivel buckets, rally wheels, console auto, power windows, power locks, ac, rear window defogger, factory front and rear floor mats, light under the hood and inside the trunk, cruise control, tilt steering wheel, power steering, and power brakes. Mine had the 305 2 barrel with very small carburetor jets which were a little too lean. Beautiful car. Thank you Steve for another wonderful Junkyard Crawl on a car that I had and loved.

You know, of all the Gen 2 Monte’s I’ve personally been involved with over the years, I have never come across one with a center console! Every single one has been a bench seat car, so they must have sold a TON of the benches even though it’s a vehicle that pretty much cries out for a center console and shifter!
@googleusergp

@@ddellwo I've seen plenty with a floor shift and I went to college with a guy that had one, a 1977 with a 350 V8 and swivel buckets. He bragged about getting a NAPA distributor cap with brass terminals for "better spark". Too bad that those were available everywhere else. He'd put that "top quality" distributor cap on there, but the car had aluminum pool sides for floor boards. He was witty though. When asked what he wanted to do for work when we graduated, he said, "I want to be a mon back" When the counselor asked, "What's that?" He said, "Ya know the guy behind the truck waving the driver back saying 'Mon back.....keep comin', "Mon back". LOL.

@@ddellwo My Monte had storage in the center with a lid like a glove box that you could put things in. I bought it in Oct 77 when the 78s came out it had been a dealer demo with literally every option available. It was my first new car and had about 3,400 miles on it. There was a light gold demo with a cloth bench seat and a 350 4 barrel I wanted but it literally sold when I was test driving it. I liked the swivel buckets but I would have preferred the 350 4 barrel over the 305 2 barrel (the 350 was the fleet truck manager's demo). I had called all the surrounding dealers and only 1 dealer had 77 Montes. I liked the Pontiac Grand Prix and called the Pontiac dealers and none had any 77 Grand Prix left. I wanted the last of the big GM PLCs. I eventually got use to the downsized intermediates.

Many people don’t realize that extension on the should isn’t for Chevelle to Monte Carlo. That extension is the add on for the small block , pull the clips and take it off and you have a big block shroud.
@danjanes8689
@danjanes8689 2 жыл бұрын
It's not quite that simple. Yes, the small blocks used a longer shroud than the big blocks, but the 2 shrouds are only 2¼" different. The small block depth is 12½", and the big block is 10¼". I have both to measure.

As a young fire and rescue first responder I learned that 75 and later Monte Carlo's had an extra reinforced B pillar due to General Motors anticipating that the government was going to mandate rollover Crash standards so you couldn't cut the top off of a Monte Carlo to extract passengers because it took too long so you would cut the bottom of the A pillars and then cut into the roof just before the B pillar and tilt most of the roof back. Just some more odd Automotive History!

I also had 15x8 Corvette steel wheels which looked like the factory 15x7 wheels but much better looking! Of course, I broke many spindles too because they were so much heavier! I'm 62 years old. I've owned several GTO's, Mustangs, a 2006 Charger SRT, a 98 Trans Am WS6 (which I still own) and hands down my MC was my favorite car of all time. Thank you again!!!

@MrRamayr98 The 454 in a '75 Monte had to be exceedingly rare. The last year a 454 was available in a Chevelle (Malibu) or even Corvette was 1974. Back in the late '80s or early '90s, I saw a news expose show on one of the major networks where they hired an older couple to drive a large RV around the country, while stopping for service on the RV at several shops located near major highways. The network also had their own team of mechanics, who verified the mechanical condition, and also set up small malfunctions to test the mechanics. Some shops fixed only the 'manufactured' malfunction, while others went beyond, doing work which was unnecessary in order to increase the bill. (Or even claiming to have done extra work which wasn't actually performed.) At the end, reporters confronted the dishonest shop owners. One of those shop owners was driving a '69 or '70 Grand Prix, and when he made his escape, I saw him reach down to put it in gear, and as he drove off I could hear that the GP had a manual transmission.

Hi Steve, another great video on the 1st and 2nd gen Monte Carlos. 1st was no question, a beautiful car. The 2nd gen took a while for me to embrace, but I've come to my senses. 😆 Around here, 30yr ago, it was common to see a 2nd gen set up with a "gangster lean" or jacked way up in the air all around. It's not like today's customized cars with the 30in rims, etc. These were set up on the biggest tires on 15in Chevy ralleys with about a ft or more of clearance added with blocks, etc. If you were riding behind one of them, the rear axle assembly and sway bar were definitely on display, and if it didn't have a factory sway bar well thats what JC Whitney catalog was for. I installed a ton of them on 'these rides' back in the day. Some had them so tight that they would bounce going down the rd. I'm sure they lost all that personal luxury ride. A fellow came to me with one, one day and asked if I could install a new fuel tank on his car, and what he brought to me was a chromed tank. I asked why? "You're not gonna be able to see it." His reply was "...if you get it high enough, you can!". So if anyone ever sees a 2nd gen Monte with a chrome fuel tank. Rest assured, it was installed correctly. LOL Namaste 🙏🏼

Similar point here on the radiator fan shroud- when the Cadillac Eldorado was restyled for '67, initially there was the possibility of a return to a 12 engine(at the design level); so if one looks at the fan shrouds for those, there's almost literally a short tunnel there, as they ended up scrapping the V12 idea & stayed with a V8. The fix for cooling was the add on fan shroud extension.

I owned a 1970 Chevrolet Monte Carlo from 1991-2010. Mine was early build (September 1969) from the Flint Michigan plant. Mid year, they eliminated the trim piece on the front of the vinyl top and ran the top to the windshield moulding. Mine was “desert sand”(gold) with a black vinyl top and “sandlewood” interior. It was a 350 4 barrel and had A/C. I spent several years restoring the car. I got to enjoy it for several years before I sold it in 2010. I’ve owned 3 others over the years, 1978, 1979 and 1983 models.

I didn’t know that about the vinyl top trim. Mine was built the 3rd week of December 1969 in Van Nuys, California. It has the full halo. I’ve had it for 40 years now.

Yes, 1975 was the last year for the 454 V8 in the Monte Carlo (the 400 was the top engine option for 1976), but the 454 was used in other models in 1976 and of course continued in trucks well beyond 1976. I dated a girl in 1990 whose parents had an original 20,000-mile 1971 Monte Carlo. It was silver with a black roof and black interior, likely a 350 V8 and nothing special but in very nice shape. It got hit and they junked it. Funny thing was I went to her house to pick her up driving my 1980 Trans Am and I got the third degree about the car (which was and always has been stock). I tried to explain that it was my mother's car (which it was) and even showed the registration that it was in her name, but her mother wasn't having it. The girlfriend then said, "His parents go to our Catholic church", and that sealed the deal. After that when we broke up, her mother would ask her, "He was so nice. Why aren't you going out with him any longer?" Her friends said, "Her mother really likes you. That woman doesn't like anyone that dates her daughter". Her father was such a nice mild-mannered man and it was obvious who wore the pants in that family. LOL. My coworker has a 1973 Monte Carlo 454 V8 that his father bought new. He also has an original 1970 Chevelle SS LS6 454 V8 four speed that he bought new as well. Another friend of mine was a caretaker of a 1970 Chevelle SS 396 car that like my coworker's 454 was an original car in the original owner's family up until about three years ago. It still had two original bias ply tires on it and my friend had those replaced, but saved those. Years back when we both worked together, I was able to get some carburetor parts for it and my friend rebuilt the carburetor. The car was a clean, original car, and my friend (who sometimes posts here as I found out) is an excellent mechanic and fastidious about his work, even to this day. Unfortunately, the family sold it as the original owner passed, the son had the car for years and I believe he passed, so the family sold the car to a classic car reseller and I'm sure it's since sold by now. If you want to watch something funny, in a movie around this same time in 1975, Stacy Keach takes one on a "test ride". Google it and watch it on YT. It's entertaining to say the least. Also a decent movie (but fictionalized a bit) is the movie "Driven" about John DeLorean. Mr. DeLorean made no qualms about who he was and that he was a maverick that wasn't loved by GM brass. But as he said, "At the end of the day, they will ask how many cars you sold and how much money you made. Anything else about you really doesn't matter". He was known to date and have very attractive wives. He for a time dated the "Dodge Girl" and when questioned about it, Mr. DeLorean quipped, "What was the big deal? It wasn't like I was going to buy a Dodge and she was going to buy a Pontiac.....". That's how Mr. DeLorean was. For this 1970 Monte Carlo, no tag, can't brag, but would be something like ST70 for 1970 model year, 13857 for Monte Carlo, maybe B for Baltimore, MD assembly (among other choices), 780 or 784 for Green interior trim, 43 for Citrus Green exterior paint or 45 for Green Mist exterior paint (as it appears that the trunk and hinges are two different colors, so perhaps the trunk was changed at some point, G for Dark Green vinyl top, among other codes. No VIN, can't win, but easy to figure out, no doubt: 1 for Chevrolet, 38 for Monte Carlo, 57 for two door coupe, 0 for 1970 model year, possible B for Baltimore, MD assembly and the rest is the production sequence. The Baltimore, MD plant operated from 1935 to 2005 and last assembled the Astro and Safari vans. The three-speed manual was available in 1975 and standard on the 350 V8, but I'm sure few were bought that way. The 400 and 454 V8s in 1975 were all automatics. The 350 two barrel had 145 HP in 1975 and 155 HP for the 4 barrel as installed in a Monte Carlo that year. Yes, John DeLorean was the father of that Grand Prix and for a year Pontiac had a one year exclusive on that "personal luxury coupe" until the Monte Carlo came out in 1970. For the 1975 Monte Carlo, no tag, can't brag, but easy to figure out, no doubt: ST75 for 1975 model year, 1AH57 for Monte Carlo, maybe B for Baltimore, MD assembly (among other possibilities), 26 and then a modifier code (there were many) for Blue bench seat interior trim, possible 22 for Bright Blue exterior paint, A for vinyl top, among other codes. No VIN, can't win, but easy to figure out, no doubt: 1 for Chevrolet, H for Monte Carlo, 57 for two door, H for 350 V8 with two barrel, 5 for 1975 model year, B for Baltimore, MD assembly (among other possibilities), and the rest is the production sequence. The 1973 to 1977 cars were called "Colonnade Style". It's OK to use "A" and "G" body interchangeably as it gets confusing with GM alphabet soup. The "G" body moniker took over in the parts books from 1982 up. A 1981 Monte Carlo is listed as an "A" body in the parts catalog, a 1982 is a "G" body, but most use the terms back and forth and it's "acceptable" to do so.

Hard to tell without a VIN or tag to brag, and especially without front end sheetmetal, but Im wondering why the 75 has a blue painted engine. GM didnt switch from orange to blue engine until halfway thru 1976 production I believe. So either the engine was switched, which is a possibility, and could be a 305 from a later model but no newer than 1979 with a dipstick on the driver side, or this is a 76 model year. The "unleaded fuel only" on the gauge indicates at least a 75. Also, 1975 and final year 76 Laguna models have small opera windows in the sail panel, unlike SS 454 models of 74 and 75 Chevelles which did use a full size quarter window.

@@WildBill236 100% correct. Always need the tag to brag and the VIN to win. I had my own "Will it run?" today. I obtained (back in 2014) a 1996 Craftsman two stage snowblower with a Tecumseh 5 HP engine. For $15 in parts and maybe an hour's worth of time, the machine roared to life on the first try. As I was videoing it running I said, "Run Forrest, Run..." LOL.

Bought a 76 Monte Carlo in 79. Burgundy vinyl top over white body with white vinyl interior. When I bought it, I wasn't that wowed by the look, but it was okay. That changed once I found what a chick magnet that thing was! Seemed like all the girls thought it was the most beautiful car they had ever seen. Got a lot of miles and smiles out of that car!😉
