Ford trucks got a big boost in horsepower in 1954 when modern Over Head Valve Y-Block V8's replaced the ancient Flathead V8. Here, Steve explores a rough and ready 6-wheel F500 dump truck with a helpful 2-speed rear axle.

Good to see you recovering Steve. In September I took a trip to Shelburne Falls, MA for a Corvair Show at Clark's Corvair Parts and while I was in the area I got to visit Bernardston Auto Parts for a tour. It was awesome seeing the hubcap van in person and meeting Dale, and of course Katie the Junkyard Queen.

We had a very slightly newer version of that truck on our farm when I was growing up. Driving it to and from the fields became one of my duties starting at about age 13. It had a hydraulic dump bed, and everything you showed under the truck and in the cab was consistent with that. The lever closest to the parking brake is to engage/disengage the PTO from the hydraulic pump. Once the pump is spinning, the second lever directs the flow of hydraulic fluid to either raise or lower the bed. Happy to see that you're on the mend!

This truck might have been a farm truck. Haul grain or feed and dump the load in either an auger elevator or bottom drop like the grain storage yards use. Cheers Steve. 🇨🇦

My old farmer neighbor had a 52 Ford he bought new. Well used by the mid 80s when I was old enough to help during hay season with 26k on the clock going around the 175 acre farm. Anyways,well used wasn't the word ,farmed is 😂 No exhaust,rotted off at the manifolds. No brakes ,looked like dust in the master 😂 E brake? Yeah but the shoes were shot so its metal on metal. Whats a soul to do? Well, he could backup with a load of hay for the elevator and cut the key and roll within 6" of it 😂 The man was such a boss with stuff like that. Boy would he give his kid an evil eye as we went up the road to field 5 (1mi) as he'd get 2nd wound out ,that ol flatty screamin just echoing thru the valley😂 Original tires...(he joked about the air being original too). They may have been flat , hard to tell they were as hard as stones 😂

Thanks for the great video Steve! Glad to see that you're on the mend. One item about the wheels on this truck - they are the infamous Firestone RH-5 'Widowmaker' type two piece wheels that are know to explode when being inflated. Super dangerous to work on!

It is once again good to see you. You look like you are getting stronger and stronger each day which is encouraging because hopefully we will see you back soon. I had commented on this one before, and I can dig up those comments again and repost them for anyone that is interested in reading them. Once again, hope to see you soon as you are sorely missed.
@googleusergp8 ай бұрын
Here's the original comment: Yes, that looks like a newer carburetor as the Motorcraft name didn't come until much later. It would have likely been "Autolite" back then. Motorcraft was in use by Ford and then discontinued for a time and brought back around 1972 and still exists today. Clark was often the rear end supplier to Ford back then. No VIN, can't win, but might be something like: F50 for F500 Conventional Cab, V for 239 CID V8 or Z for 256 CID V8, or D for 223 CID six cylinder, 4 for 1954 model year, maybe F for Dearborn, MI assembly and the rest is the production sequence. The Dearborn, MI facility is now the River Rouge complex with the Dearborn, plant closing around 2004. No tag, can't brag, but can be figured out, no doubt: 4SYN for four speed manual synchronized transmission, M1722 or M1075 for Vermillion Red exterior paint or possibly M1084 for Glacier Blue exterior paint. The tag with the VIN and other details was likely on the inside of the glove box lid, which I was hoping you'd show and then everything could be figured out and decoded.
