But if I actually get a reply, I understand the other applications for the BITE method. But, not sure I agree on the "use with family relationships". Don't you think that it is inherently wroth with the potential for error?

Yes. Many of them use you. They look down upon you if you call in sick. They expect you to pick up shifts. They won't give you vacation time. They play favorites. If you want to leave, they act concerned for you that you won't make as much in tips elsewhere. Of course, there are many awesome restaurants to work for; you just have to know to leave if yours is treating you poorly.

The "very traditional" yoga school I went to turned out to be a cult. It was run by one person, the head guru, and she had several, severally brainwashed teachers and regular students under her. I went there for my first and second teacher trainings. The first time, I was a doe caught in the headlights and was taken in all the way by the heady experience of it all. The second time I went back, I had, had other experiences with yoga, and wasn't as naïve as the first time. I was, gulp, more worldly. By the second time things had become even more controlling and manipulative, and I wasn't drinking the cool aid, which the guru could see, as she was so shrewd in her observations of who and who wasn't under her control. I was the black sheep, and wasn't excepted by the head teachers. I was the outsider, but still earned my advanced teacher training under her, just barely, and was lucky to get out of there with only spending $8,000 total at the time. I was not included in "special ritual ceremonies" as I wasn't deemed worthy, and it was quite a hurtful experience. Many years after graduating and having not returned to the school, a former classmate informed me that the guru had an "alter ego" she had claimed was an assistant but was really her, she'd been using all along to come down hard with a big stick on anyone that didn't please her and conform to her authoritarian rule. When the truth came out two teacher trainings were under way, and those unsuspecting students probably lost all of their money, and one student had begun divorce proceedings, as celibacy was so heavily preached. The ashram fell apart, and the school is permanently closed. My friend told me some of her head teachers will probably have to get some professional help to overcome the abuse and mind control they endured and perpetuated themselves for years. The teachings of traditional yoga is actually the science of all religions and laid out the groundwork for cults long, long, long ago. Anyone that's gone through a guru lead teacher training can probably relate, even if they had a far less severe experience than I did. Yoga schools, are often "very soft" now, and commercialized, and far more into the exercise aspect of practice, versus, the philosophical emphasis, backed up with intense 3 hour long asana practices that some traditional schools, such as mine were based on. I respect the teachings of yoga, and will always love the ancient beauty of it, but I am aware that throughout the ages, it's been a very powerful tool for abuse and mind control. If anyone's interested, the movie Wild Wild Country about Osho on Netflix is an extreme example of what seemingly rational people will do when they give up their power to a guru. And for modern look at how willing people are to give up their power to a "guru" check out Kumare also on Netflix. Jai!

Wow. A comment in the comment section really worthy of absorption and analysis. Very well thought out and informative. I actually took notes. Many years ago (I am 67) in my 20's I was seeking truth and dove into many, many philosophies and readings and explorations. I did become a Christian and when I married my last husband (who was rigidly dogmatic) I found myself plunged into a Christian Church that had many, many of these cult like characteristics or 'Toxic Faith'. Interestingly my ex husband was a survivor of child sexual abuse (which he denied for many years but which had been revealed to me in a graphic dream in the first months of the marriage and which he later admitted towards the end of the marriage). The pastor of this church was charming and seemed like a really nice guy but he had major control issues and he too, had been sexually abused for years by an older man when he was a youth. My observation is that wounded or unhealed people-especially those with major shame issues-for some reason gravitate towards these 'cult-like' institutions. About 27 years ago, when in prayer, a still small voice said to me 'FOLLOW NO MAN". That was revolutionary to me. I got out of my toxic, Bible banging marriage and my toxic Bible banging church and never looked back. I still love Christ with my whole being but my beliefs are much more cosmic now and I could never, ever go back. Thanks for your sharing.

@@Eleivana777 Thank you for sharing your story, wow! You are a very strong person to have overcome the control of a husband with such zealot faith, not to mention the church. I, like you, have come out of my experience with my love intact for the teachings, but with a wiser and stronger resolve to "follow no man." Thank you for sharing that incredible insight. From what I have experienced and witnessed, I think the willingness to give up personal power to a guru, a controlling church, powerful pastor, or whatever cult like personality or organization may apply is almost inebriating. It can feel good to be led and told we are good boys and girls. And so your insight about people that have been harmed, abused, by an adult that always holds more power than a child is very insightful indeed. And, how many people in the world are living with a wounded inner child...

I read something recently that made so much sense, about cults that use street or door to door witnessing or prospecting in various forms, that it actually isn’t for the purpose of gaining new members. Because the rate of success is extremely low, it isn’t a good way of recruiting new members at all. The actual purpose is instilling loyalty in current members. Because all the rejection they receive heightens that sense of “us vs them” and makes the outside world feel more hostile, and the group feel more safe. People on the outside yell at me and insult me when I’m only trying to share “the truth” with them… but those in the cult understand and make me feel safe, they really “get me”. It makes it less likely you will leave, if you go through a lot of that kind of thing. I’m glad you found your way out anyway. ❤️

Doesn't that just show that we as humans are generally cult-like though? So maybe it's not such a bad thing? By that I mean, if you get down to the basics, society only functions because people agree together to follow certain rules and if those rules are broken there are consequences. We encourage each other to think and act in certain ways and not in others.… So it seems that the BITE model is just not a very good way to determine a cult. It's simply too broad when almost any human organization can be considered a cult under this model. Just read through the comment section for this video. I spent a few minutes reading through it and I think every organization under the sun has been named by someone here as a cult. It's just too broad.

@@jenniferbrower Manipulation in cults and manipulation in relationships from an abusive partner who is controlling the relationship are so on par with each other. But a relationship cannot be a cult. A relationship is a relationship and a cult is a cult. A toxic relationship and a cult uses the same modus operandi to achieve control and power over their victims. I honestly think there should be classes on this as children, to spot the signs of being abused and manipulated. It would save a tonne of children if they were to speak up from within toxic family dynamics, cults and be able to spot such behaviours later in life when they go on to form attachments to other people. Disorganised attachment, dysfunctional attachment is messy and causes the child who becomes an adult to form dysfunctional attachments and give their power freely to another. Prevention is better than cure.

The BITE concept is interesting, but I think it is a bit too broad as presented here. Does telling you when to have sex and with whom mean moral teachings on sexuality or exhortation of believers to marry people of the same faith (both of which are very common in world religions), or does it rather mean compelling members to have sex with the guru or with other group members? You cannot make people aware what constitutes a cult if everything can have the hallmarks of a cult...
@nikan7704

This is my problem with this BITE model. Watching the video I kept thinking, so pretty much every organization ever fits into this model… and after reading the comments I've been made aware of so many more organizations than I had thought of that also fit into this model. Even people talking about restaurant jobs and football teams, etc. So.. pretty much the majority of organizations created by humans over the entirety of our recorded history can fit this model. I'd say it's a little too broad... 🙄😕
@debvoz
@debvoz Жыл бұрын
@@nikan7704 The point made in the video is that the situation becomes a "cult" in a negative connotation when the items in the model become extreme - all sports teams are a minor form of cult, but they aren't negative because they don't try to completely dominate the lives of their cultists. You hit the nail on the head when you said that the majority of human organizations have elements of this model. It is human nature. However, there is a significant difference between College Football cultists and Jonestown cultists. There is a huge difference between resturant worker cultists and Nazis. There are elements of cultish behavior in corporate America - the unhesitating obedience to leadership, the encouragement of overwork and gratitude for the "privilige" of such overwork, the insistence that not being "dedicated" enough is moral failing, etc. The trick is recognizing the cult like influcences and not accepting ridgid adherence to the cult's leaders and philosophies.
@nikan7704
@nikan7704 Жыл бұрын
@@debvoz Thanks for your input. Can you explain then how this model applies to religion? According to the model, including your distinction, I can't think of any religion (talking organized religions) that is not a "cult" under this model. Religion by nature asks complete obedience to its principles, throughout one's daily actions and even thoughts. (An argument could be made that some don't, because they have a "live life whatever way suits you" approach, with only a communal aspect to the religion itself, but let's please put those in a separate category from organized religions that have an actual faith-based foundation and adherence to moral right vs wrong.) So every religion on earth is a cult by this model's definition. Which on its face would not be a bad thing, however we view "cult" as a very bad thing. Appreciate your thoughts on this.

Great post. also grew up Mormon in the Bay Area, took endowments our at Tenple in Oakland…I’d recommend d the The “CES Letter”….a great resource for those who may have doubts With Mormon beliefs and history. The scary part of the LDS church is that they say that their “truth” is confirmed via the spirit… as in, if you feel good that is a confirmation of GOD. If, you feel good… ignore facts, history, whatever commen sense way gauging reality. .anything in the LDS church that is pivotal, key, or important falls completely apart if you look into it past the simple whitewashed history it cherry picks to its members. Witnesses, Book of Mormon, polygamy polyandry, Joseph’s evolution of how he taught nature of god, the translation of BOM, Emma being the #23rd wife sealed to Joseph, geez there’s nothing that holds up. Even the only handwritten version (1 of the 4 recorded) of the 1st vision that we have are all different, getting more rediculous the later the recording.

My problem with the BITE model is the LINK with an organization and ignoring the individual - you can discipline the group for the individual or the individual for the group AND IT MAKES A BIT DIFFERENCE ... DNA -> Dysfunctional Narcissistic Autism ... institute or organization? E-QUALITY or authority? You already start with your place in society - some people get the authority and others have to ACCEPT the consequences ... cult or dictatorship? It's ALL THE SAME ... we're speaking about CLUSTER PROBLEMS, you keep on FEEDING the dysfunctional patterns, while there are enough alternatives YOU IGNORE, again, something we link with narcissism. I could use the BITE model to 'explain' my personal situation in court BUT AM IGNORED BY JUSTICE that is a narcissistic bastion, based on MILITARY PRINCIPLES - you see how the left hand protects the right. My marriage had all the features of a cult, with a narcissistic-autistic authority who thought that he had to protect his family against BAD INFLUENCES. The dysfunctional dynamic was there from the beginning, but it made me independent, so it wasn't dysfunctional, only something I had to keep in mind. That house of cards collapsed when I was NO MORE ABLE TO DO THE WORK I USED TO MAKE MY RESPONSIBILITY. Take that one literally - my life was in clear and present danger and something needed to be done ASAP but the only advice I got was GIVING MY LIFE TO THE 'PROFESSIONALS'. Because it had to do with PRIVATE ISSUES, people turned their back or thought that I ignored my part in the situation, they just change the vector and it comes back on your plate, the neverending story. Suddenly I WAS THE CAUSE OF THE DISRUPTION, and had to think about the children as if I had ever had given that one out of my hands - I HAD TO KEEP IN MIND THAT THERE WAS NO PLACE FOR INDIVIDUAL DESIRES WHEN IT CAME TO FAMILY DYNAMIC. I had lived in the illusion that THIS WAS NORMAL - but what do you call NORMAL in a DNA structure and when are we allowed to follow our own path to solve the problem? I watched a documentary about child abuse and the man said that he THOUGHT that it was normal too, but he was still a child and it was his mother who had brought him into a dangerous situation - enough reason to keep the DISOBEDIENT WIFE into a strict protocol, when is too late OVER AND OUT? When you speak about dysfunctional partnerships or families, you have the tendency to sugarcoat the ones WHO DON'T KNOW ANY BETTER, but that's not the case when you have to defend yourself against a narcissistic-autistic jury or institution. First, I spoke about FUNCTIONAL AUTISTIC BEHAVIOR, 'normal' people have more responsibility than 'sick' people, but in a DNA-structure, there are no sick people but narcissists who use the social strategy to get what they want, whenever they want it. I had the proofs that it was not my mistake or negligence, they simply ignored me completely - MADE ME THE NARCISSISTIC H-EX (heks -> witch) and the only thing I could do was acting stubborn, I was NOT divorced because I never signed the papers (and besides that, it was merely an administrative question - we NEVER had a real MARRIAGE, we ONLY had a dysfunctional relationship and I had no more energy to keep that lie alive). What I refused to see was the fact that it was too late already, I DON'T WANT TO FIGHT THIS LIFE ANYMORE and that's the message my body got, I am on the DEATH ROW and many will regard this as A LESSON to be learned. CAN ONE PERSON CHANGE HISTORY? Maybe that's the question we must ask instead of "can one man DESTROY THE WORLD". I have NOTHING to lose (not even my 'reputation') ...

Well, item 1 confirms Christianity as a cult. Let’s see what 23 and 4 tell us about Christianity!
@DearDawah
@DearDawah 11 ай бұрын
It doesn’t work that way. One can be a Christian and do as they please, without being controlled by other people. When it comes to certain Christian GROUPS, there are cults absolutely but it comes down to the group and leadership. Christianity as a religion, does not fit the definition of a cult but some Christian groups do, because of doctrines and practices instituted by man.

I checked the religion I was brought up in, which is Lutherian protestantism (the original German version, not the American one which is... quite different) - and nearly nothing of the model fitted. Behavioural control? Well, you should generally not be an asshole and you should not murder people and such. But, mostly it's up to how you interpret "love your neighbor like yourself". Which is not a bad idea and exactly controlling. Information controlling? You are very much encouraged to use any information you can find. You are encouraged to critique your religion (because what other did Martin Luther do?) That absolutely includes Luther himself. Yet, there are rituals, say, the way a service is held. Thought control? In the end, it's your own conscience you have to follow. Again, charity and loving your neighbor like yourself (that absolutely includes loving yourself) is the thing. Judaism at least is taught to be "the older and more traditional version" of christianity and the idea us that, of course, all Jews go to heaven. You are very encouraged to ecomenism with other churches and monotheistic religions, too. And of course, atheism, which, where I live, is the default for "religious" beliefs. There is singing, though. Yet I at least, always was encouraged to not sing what I didn't mean. Emotional control? Your emotions are yours, there is not a thing the church could dictate about it. And how would they? Why? There's always the offer that you're allowed to feel comforted by the believe of someone, some power, loving you, for you being you, without condition, though. It absolutely is a religion, but really, it does not fit the model very well. So, I wouldn't say all religions are cults. And I very much suspect there must be many more churches/religions more or less like mine.
