Deploration pour une amie defunte', by Monique Gabus, performed by Steven Isserlis (www.stevenisserlis.com)
Directed, Filmed, and edited by Gabriel M Isserlis (www.gabrielisserlis.com)
Over the Christmas holidays this year, my Dad and I wanted to film something together. He chose a totally unknown piece that he'd just learned - 'Deploration pour une amie defunte', by Monique Gabus. (He found it in a box of his music - no idea where he got it from.) This was very spontaneous - as you can see from the state of my Dad's t-shirt! But it was something to do on a cold day - and it's a lovely piece, I think.

Each time Mr Isserlis I watch this video, it reminds us how vulnerable we all are and we need to treat each other and animals love and care… especially in these uncertain times. Thank you.

A lovely piece :-). Really nice to hear a totally unknown piece. It is so important to gather unknown pieces as we can't always play the same music over and over (as much as we all love them).

I just stumbled across with this video by chance. Never heard of this piece, although it reminds me of the hauting beauty of Bloch's Prayer, which I totally adore for its mesmerising & improvisatory melody and its interaction with the accompaniment part. I'd like to suggest this piece to my violinist friend - it should work on violin, I say! Is it originally totally unaccompanied piece? Thank you for sharing this. BTW, Steven Isserlis is my top favourite cellist, who never ceases to inspire me!

This is a gorgeous piece; how does one get hold of the music? If I am not mistaken isn't this the time of when Steven Isserlis lost his wife? Very personal moment shared with his son whom did the videoing and editing of this recording. I just love the Steven Isserlis plays, with such raw passion and delicacy. I so would love to play this piece; in my case few years yet. Grade 3-4 at present.

Probably lets him use a more intense vibrato without sacrificing stability. Whatever works.

Why does he always put his 2nd finger on top of his 3rd finger when he does a vibrato on the 3rd finger?
