This is one of the most beautiful things I have EVER heard. Isserlis sings each and every phrase so naturally, without ever being hampered by cellistic technique. And that musical sigh around 3 mins in... ahhh! No one comes close to even touching his interpretation of Schumann, imo.

Steven Isserlis has been among my top 3 favorite classical musicians...for the past 20 years. Incredibly spirited--the perfect idealization of Faure's works for the cello...and hearing this Schumann piece I am even more impressed. My young one and I are reading his two books right now and his deep love and humor fit what I hear right now.

You can probably hear this concerto once every few years live at any major Symphony Orchestra. But for Isserlis you probably need to follow him around!

P.S. to my previous comment, which was refused on another page. Isserlis plays beautifully. But this nonsense about turning Clara Schumann into a villainess has got to be stopped. Deciding about the last works of an ill man must have been difficult for her, Joachim and Brahms as is shown by their correspondence. . Joachim, as violinist, was undoubtedly resposnsible for the suppression of the Violin Concerto. He didn't like the introversion of the wonderful slow movement..

The computer wouldn't allow me to edit my comment above. It was definitely Joachim who suppressed the Violin Concerto. He said he would never play it. I love this Concerto and often listen to it, especially the first two movements. I also love the Cello Concerto. :People complain about the paucity of the orchestral part but that is precisely what I love about it. A wonderfully fractured relationship between soloist and orchestra, the cello forging ahead about what it has to say.

A few facts. Isserlis claims Clara Schumann destroyed great cello pieces by Schumann. How does he know they were great? Clara made all her decisions in conference with Brahms and Joachim.and tended to defer to their judgement. The piano was Clara's vocation but she was not a careerist. Her one desire was to earn some money to make life easier for Robert. To Brahms she said, "First comes my art and then the money making," after he had suggested a quick t money making tour.
