Coues' Deer is named for Elliott Coues, a prominent naturalist in the 19th century. The standard biography of Coues notes that the family pronounced it "Cows." I wrote a book in 2012 that included a great deal of information about Coues. After all, it's a proper name, named after a person, whose family had a particular pronunciation. End of story.

Today's "Meateater Media Recommendations" brought me here. Anyway...I lived in southern Arizona for several years back in the mid-80's, and at that time all the locals pronounced it COWSE deer. Naturally, I adopted that pronunciation and continue to use it to this day, even though I realize I'm in the small minority who do so (and it probably makes me sound "pretentious" LOL)

Let me start off by saying I'm from Arizona, So the coues deer is a subspecies of the whitetail deer. Also since we only have mule deer & coues deer here in Arizona we simply call them Whitetail, whenever we do say coues deer we pronounce it coooze.

I hunt them almost every year and we all call em coose, "coues " ,whitetail, "cola blanca", I guess it's all the same difference let's make it simple and just say grey ghost of the desert, lol.
