He really is parrying a punch or attack, but does it so quickly with that center line. Those first couple angles you see, although they’re not throwing violent haymakers and he probably knows where they’re coming from to a degree, there is no doubt this could work in a real fight. It’s a slight push to the inside or push to the outside of the parry but definitely realistic.

That's Haruo Matsuoka Sensei...He studied a long time under Seagal before going out on his own. His own style looks very much like Seagal. There is some good video of him if you look for it.

Funny thing is that people always trash Mr. Seagal, but not realizing that he's 6'5" and weighs over 200 pounds, so of course he's gonna make things look very easy as opposed to a much smaller person like my size of 5'7" and 160 pounds.

Steven Seagal's aikido looks and seemed a lot more realistic than the typical Aikido stuff I see online. I'm not talking about him in his current state I'm talking about during this time and earlier. It almost looks like a completely different art than what Rokas and other aikido guys do, they look more like they are doing a dance. I don't know if it's just his size or his speed but his movement in general is so much better than others that I've seen.

You are correct, it is a completely different style with far more depth compared to the typical Aikido dojo. It is very unfair that a lot of curious people ended up in Aikido dojos after watching his movies from the 90ies, but then having arrived they were never taught any of the skills demonstrated by Seagal Sensei. His style is extremely demanding on the student, causes a lot of injuries during study, and is legally dangerous if applied thoughtlessly by immature people on unsuspecting people. The Aikikai federations prefer to play it safe with the "dance-like" Aikido that they teach which can be practiced by all safely, that way everyone is happy and "doing Aikido", fees can be collected from a far greater number of people. The teachers at the federation dojos are themselves usually not taught Aikido as Budo, it's a policy decided long ago by Hombu in Japan. Meanwhile Seagal Sensei's style is one of the true Budo branches of the art, a surviving pocket of something authentic preserved by the teachers he studied with in Japan, in defiance of general policy. Few people understand that Aikido is not a single definite art, it's more an umbrella term for several precious branches growing from a single ancient root. The branches can look as different as the environment where they're growing, but there are certain uniting elements, like going right through a violent confrontation as a hot knife through butter, without the possibility of resistance from the opponent. It's difficult to see on video if you're not used to spotting it, but in person it's easy to feel and recognize "the method of the ancients".

i feel like SS's success was due to his build. If Dwayne Johnson wanted to sell a martial arts style rather than do bodybuilding, he could do that easily. When manopause catches up, the brute strength goes away and you get bullshido if your style cannot be executed successfully by a nonmuscular teen, old man, or woman.

Tai sabaki, ashi sabaki, just watching clips of him teaching when I was in college made me a better martial artist. I could watch this all day. 😁 If anyone watching hasn't seen The Path Beyond Thought, I highly recommend it, it's on here. Everything he's saying about body position just ran through his entire form and it showed in his technique. I think part of what made him so fast was that he deeply internalized the principles and realities of body movement. Add to that his commitment to teaching a very practical form, it's why people who trained under him or with him say he was as legit as they came. Just earning the rank of Shodan as a white man in Japan back in the day was proof enough if you knew what martial culture was like back then because they did not hand out black belts like they were candy, especially to someone who wasn't Japanese.

Seagal always and still has one thing that stands out greater than his street style Aikido. HIS PRESENCE .. You watch him do this and you watch him do that, but if you are really wise watch how Present he is. It is his presence, his in the moment focus which fly’s with the wind. He teaches non aggression through aggression, it is a Buddistic Tennent. All the dialogue on Seagal amounts to people trying to analytically work him out. You Can’t.

From what I recall, the style Segal learned was more like Daito, think early Aikido vs late Aikido. What he's adapted it to is more like Daito was/is than most Aikido is today.

Чак Норис, замутил со своим братом целую киностудию, которая его и снимала, с целью раскрутки сети школ карате имени себя, где тоже давал показательные выступления и переодически сам преподавал. То есть кто то становится звёздами спорта, чтобы потом зарабатывать в кино, кто то наоборот. Так что такие вот семинары нисколько не благотворительность. К слову Сигал тут крут

А ещё мне нравятся чемпионаты мира по карате времён примерно 70 - 80-ых годов... Когда на соревнования съезжались каратисты из Нью-Йорка, Лос-Анжелеса, Чикаго, Сан-Франциско, Детройта и ещё какого-нибудь Сиэтла и всё это громко именовалось чемпионатом мира по карате! А кто там побеждал, становился соответственно сразу чемпионом всего мира по карате! Уха-ха-ха Да... менталитет в Штатах - проще некуда: побились в междусобойчике и назвали победителя чемпионом всего мира! Уха-ха-ха

)those marțial arts principles spoken by Steven segal have no value if he uses a smaler in hight and weight opponent .Steven segal is using his long arms to mentain his advantage and any fighter who has fought with a taller oponent knows that he must ajust his defence and atack to defeat the taller oponent becose odherwise will get punched a lot becose of the arms lenght advantage. if Steven segal wants to prove his theories he must aply them fighting with a taller havier opponent .)and there are images on the internet when he fights in demonstrations with same size oponents and then Steven segal uses a diffrent way of fighting.

Even if you grasped all this, the vast majority would have to practice a whole lot before becoming fluent and capable. Roy Surname said Steven Seagal.is the real thing. He had Suenaka-Ha-Aikido. Where he taught Shorinryu first as I understand it, so a person can protect themselves as Aikido takes time.

Fantastic hard style aikido and he moved so fluently here but...you aren't stopping a single leg or a shoot with that pressure point. He made a good observation about not letting the head get jn but no way you can pull that pressure point off under the nose when a guy is plowing right through you for a single or double leg

This is self defence he's teaching, he can go on offence within the same moves just depends on how much pressure he uses. In a real situation I'd rather have his skills than any other discipline because this can be lethal when your his size, I'm sure he has plenty of moves for big guys. If one is a martial artist, then one should display some martial arts. These "opponents" of Seagal do not attempt any form of attack or counter-attack. They simply exist to highlight Seagal performing his kata IMHO 🙏🏻
