The problem is with these demonstrations is they're always with cooperative subjects, Seagal is the worst for it, you can even see him tapping himself to indicate where the other guy should attack him. A real opponent ain't gonna cooperate like that, you need something else when your joint lock fails or your opponent doesn't cooperate and throw himself down but instead headbuts you or smashes his elbow into your nose.

@@stevepalpatine2828 I totally 100% agree with you. I did Aikido for about a year and in training, we would have people line up and come at you from all angles full force with a wooden training knife or a sword. So you would have to just defend it and it works. I wasn't even that good. You say when is that gonna happen. It happens in bar fights when some guy is swinging a pool cue at you and people do pull knives in real life. Half of what the cops teach to disarm knives etc is Aikido moves. Now, I'm not saying if you know Aikido you will be some tough guy far from it. But if you know Aikido along with other martial arts, it has its purpose. UFC is and always was about the ultimate confrontation of all those styles to see what works best and guess what, it IMMIDIATELY exposed all the useless eastern martial arts like Aikido (not ALL eastern martial arts let me point out, but the useless ones that are being kept alive because "muh tradition" and by westerners who want to "indulge in eastern culture"), they got completely destroyed everytime and humiliated to a point where they all went from people identifying martial arts with karate, "one inch punch' and other bullshit and thinking the black belts are some murderous gods to becoming the world's laughing stock as they couldn't stand in one ring for 10 seconds with anyone trained in ACTUAL martial arts. And so UFC and MMA evolved into taking what's most useful from actually useful martial arts which means taking essentially nothing from previously mentioned eastern arts as they were completely exposed as totally useless in actual fights. So now the same people who were breaking wooden planks as if they were super strong and talking about stopping someone's heart with said one inch punch are like "oh no no, aikido is actually not for self defense you see, it's actually about self control and breathing techniques and rolling" like bruh get the fuck outta here You know how I know this tho? Aikido can be effective if your are in a grappling situation and know how to grapple. The problem is most Aikido dojos do not teach their students how to grapple (which ironically is where aikido is most effective) and instead focus on unrealistic arm grabs where the attacker allows you to grab the arm or leg. kicks and punches are way to fast to grab most of the time and no one is gonna let you grab them passively in a fight. Again, the only time such grabs can be done is when you are in a grappling situation.

He had the same smooth movements as Seagal and was a great teacher. It's a martial art that is effective if (like all martial arts) if the person puts in the effort to learn and practice for many years.
@stevepalpatine28284 жыл бұрын
Against Joe Sixpack on his way home from the bar. Or in _very_ specific circumstances, against someone who doesnt train. Against a balanced fighter with a good basis in BJJ and Muay Thai it just doesnt have the repertoire to compete effectively. Seagal gets away with it because he's A a pretty big dude and B an absolute master level _Aikido_ practitioner. I'm no pro fighter, but I train BJJ, Muay Thai and Lethwei regularly and I'm a bit bigger than Seagal (not as heavy lol) and I dare say I could fuck him up 9/10. Aikido doesnt test itself in competition, which allows them to maintain the illusion it works. Now against an old school 17th century Samurai I'd get fucked up, because Aikido wasnt the only thing they trained in and they actually had real (life or death) experience, so they would know what works and what doesnt, and just when its applicable. Not saying it's useless, but it has to be part of a package, so when your joint lock fails and your opponent kicks you in the liver or headbutts you in the nose instead of going with your motions, you can adapt. Theres a reason Aikido isnt used in MMA.
@overthewebb4 жыл бұрын
@@stevepalpatine2828 The reason is you are ignorant about it. Of course, what you know works in a street fight, but I did Aikido (I also did Karate and Tai Kwon Do) for a year and 2 of the guys who trained with me were Black Belts and Bouncers and who did other martial arts. If you only know aikido in a street fight against someone like yourself they will lose. However, if a guy comes at you with a knife or a baseball bat or a pool cue in a bar or a sword, what are you gonna do? Aikido is the best martial art bar none, for getting a weapon off of someone. BJJ isn't gonna help you, nor is Muay Thai. Not being used in MMA is not the be-all and end-all. Police forces and military around the world use Aikido on a daily basis for arm locks, they just don't realise they are Aikido moves they are using. That's real world, practical uses. I'm not having a go at you at all. I just think there is this ignorant, let's all laugh at Aikido within the MMA community and like any martial art. It has its uses. You just need to train in other styles and add to it, as you rightly said.
@stevepalpatine28284 жыл бұрын
@@overthewebb Well said, and I agree mostly. I'm not laughing at Aikido myself, the disarms are spot on, it was basically designed for that, last ditch defense on a battlefield if your sword broke and you had a pissed off Samurai coming at you, in that circumstance you'd have to be fast, accurate, and totally confident in what works or you're fucked. It's easy to laugh at Seagal because his "demonstrations" are against guys who attack him in pre planned ways (you can see him indicating where they should attack even) and don't try to resist, they aren't demonstrations of effective Aikido techniques as much as Seagal stroking his own ego, and they're easy to pick apart if you know what you're doing and imagine what would happen if the guy was actually trying to hurt him instead of coming in with the intention of being thrown. I'd be interested in seeing how effective it is in a real situation, sadly I haven't seen any real Aikido masters who are interested in full contact demonstrations. The weapon thing I'll grant you, that's exactly what Aikido was designed for, but how often are you likely to be attacked by a guy with a Sword these days? I CCW, if someone came at me with a knife or something I'm not gonna be using Muay Thai and risking getting cut. I also trained HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts) and the disarms in texts by Talhoffer, Ringeck and Lichentauer against longsword are similar to some Aikido stuff I've seen, as a defense against weapons Aikido is in its element, I just don't see it as being very applicable in other circumstances.

Aikido as i've seen it used in a case of self defence, is good to maim an opponent quickly, but also keeping your body free from other attackers. It's especially good for police officers, because it specifically focuses mainly on joint locks to take down someone, now is it good for a brawl? No Is it good for combat sports? No But then not every martial art needs to be a combat sport or style for fighting.

I'd like to chime in my second cents, knowing that it's undoubtedly already been said. Aikido is still very much relevant. It's not all about over sword attacks. It's about blade wielding attackers. And blades are still all too common. Elsewhere in the World to the States and undoubtedly even within the States, the Blade is the personal method of death dealing. Up close and surgical in the hands of a skilled killer and no less deadly in the hands of an amateur. Bullets miss. Blades don't.

I don't know what role, if any, Seagal played in the tactics of that fight but that was not just a regular front kick. Silva gave Belfort 2-3 strong low kicks than faked the same round motion and mid kick extended a leg for a front kick. It is as much a regular front up kick as brasilian kick is regular reoundhouse. If you look at Belfort he a) got his leg up to check the low kick and b) simultaneously got his hand to the side of his face expecting that Silva might go high with a roundhouse in a classic low low hi tactic He was genuinely surprised that that kick ended up the middle and didn't have the time to react.

I think a lot of people in this comment section are pretty young, and don't remember what Martial Arts were like just a few decades ago. Yes, what Seagal was trained in would not hold up in a real fight very well, but it is an art form, and he was an innovator of that art. I took over 2 years of Tai Kwon Do in the mid 1990's, and let me tell you I learned some pretty cool things. Almost nothing that would actually hold up in a real fight, but some cool like dance moves.
@anonsandifer5075 жыл бұрын
Lol. How does this statement hold any weight on the subject? Seagal states himself that it is legit. He makes all these outragoes claims about it and things he has done. I agree that it is an art form, but that is irrelevant if Seagal is treating it as a dangerous fighting style. I'm young, so you may disregard my statement.
