I saw the movie, my mind was honestly blown because of how good Rachel was in her acting debut. I was like "WTF!?!? Like where did this come from Spielberg??" Her performance is definitely Oscar worthy, she deserves every nomination and even win she will get. She was awesome although I felt she lacked emotional depth during the final act. I felt Natalie Wood did a much better job delivering Maria’s true devastation. But overhaul Rachel was much much better. IMHO the highlight of the movie were Mike Faist as Riffs and Ariana DeBose as Anita. They stole the whole film.

@@manuelorozco7760 i mean... i just dont like any of their music. even la la land, which i feel is the more "traditional musical style", personally i feel their songs never sound distinctive or different from any bland pop ballads you can find on the radio. they dont convey much narratively either, and it pains me that they were chosen for something so classic yet significant like snow white, that has such a classic style. hell, i think that the flight of the conchords guy who made the music for the muppets movies is a better fit for the innocent sweetness and humor of a disney's snow white remake, more than these two who will probably make it sound like camila cabello's cinderella. at least rachel zegler can actually sing showtunes.

@@rmcmariusable exactly. Many people who become very defensive of the 1961 film are so caught up to the nostalgia that don’t want to let go, it’s unbelievable. And it mostly has to do with people who are not true fans of the WSS story and don’t know it that well.’. They have probably seen the film once or twice. They are the ones who also use the word “remake” for this one in a disapproving and demeaning manner. No one says that this will replace the 1961 film no matter how good it ends up being. It’s like your first big love, you never ever ever forget it. The 1961 film will always hold a special place in my heart. That and Mary Poppins were my two big musicals growing up in our house. How can I cast it aside and “replace it”, impossible!! Having said that I am not ditching or immediately trashing any effort to another adaptation, on the contrary I welcome it. Especially when it comes from a legendary director like Steven Spielberg, who along with Kubrick, were also a huge part of my childhood. When you go in depth to look at the people he surrounded himself with for this project, his 9 year research involvement prior to engaging production, you will be convinced that he truly loves WSS like no one else and the outcome will be nothing short of great. The film critic reviews so far (95% on Rotten Tomatoes) the soundtrack that has already been released along with Moreno’s and Stephen Sondheim’s remarks for the film thus far leave no doubt about how good this adaptation is.

Fantastic actress! There are really good actors/actresses maybe technique wise etc. but it’s been awhile since someone evokes a strong emotional connection to a character. I’ve seen her interviews and KZbin channel and got a vibe if her off screen persona. Even from just these clips, I see “Maria” not Rachel Zegler. Some actors still retain their off screen personas but she completely disappears. And made me tear up just from “Tonight” clips. Natural talent ❤️✨❤️

This is like demanding that a character who is supposed to be from Ohio MUST be play by an Actor from Ohio… no actors from Pennsylvania can be cast as an Ohioan. Also, Canadians can no longer play Americans. Black British citizen can’t play African Americans… this whole argument is ridiculous

It was talked about on 20/20 that Spielberg actually went to San Juan to get some insight from the Puerto Rican community before the film went into the production. & Rachel Zegler is Latina & is absolutely perfect for the role

A real boriqueña is a symbol that is meaningful to boriqueños to see that they are seen as a race who is respected. The story isn't about white latinos and ain't about black latinos either, it's a mixed race of latinos. The point is Maria just being a latino person is fine. Rachel Zegler is a half latino actress who can speak spanish and english perfectly, there's no need to be changed. Instead of complaining why not just watch the movie, her performance was wildly praised by critics and audiences, and you say they couldn't cast a Puerto Rican actress? Also the actress must sing on set, not everyone mainly Puerto Rican actress can sing on set either, dubbing isn't Spielberg's choice for this movie. When open up the casting audition, Spielberg wanted Maria to be played by a Latino actress who can sing too, it's not about whether she has to be white or black, just Latino. So yeah its not just about the casting but also the fact that the actress HAD to sing on set and for the soundtrack
