Fun fact: Lapis was animated with a smoother frame rate than all the other characters to emphasize her "vibe/aesthetic" and her connection to water. Also, real-life Lapis Lazuli stones DO have a higher molecular water content than most other gemstones do (opals do as well; which is a cool tidbit since Pearl is also associated with water and she's half of the Opal fusion,) so that's an interesting concept for her!

1 year late, but pearls are not gems. pearls come from the ocean. That’s the main reason why I believe.

@@PandaArt8 I find it fascinating that they incorporated Pearls as Gems when they're the only ones formed withing living organisms IRL, and in the SU canon they're not made that way. Similarly, Bismuths are considered Gems, but IRL they're a pure element on their own not mineral compounds like most actual gemstones or biologically-sourced nacre formed around a core like pearls, and it's in fact a metal. The rainbow/iridescent colors on Bismuth come from its tarnishing. I have a few pieces of Bismuth in my small collection of semiprecious stones and it's quite beautiful!

@@aliyahpulido953 in Steven universe future we still see that they kept the clam shell association with pearls. They also seemed more robotic than the other gems (in the movie and future)

@@PandaArt8 I think that's mostly due to the fact that Pearls are, in Peridot's words, "made-to-order servants" who are programmed by their owners to do whatever they're required to. I guess other lower rank Gems can also be "programmed"to do jobs, or be "hijacked" like White did or "infected with a virus" like Corruption does.

Two things: 1. Pearl said it was a "gem-powered mirror" which means before she was a mirror, Lapis Lazuli was the gem we see upon being free. Since she's a water gem, it's safe to assume she was not meant to be in the mirror in the first place. 2. Pearl also said they found the mirror at the Galaxy Warp. So that means something happened (I won't say what as to not spoil) to Lapis that made her release her physical form and someone put her in that mirror before the Crystal Gems found her.

Finally! Lapis is my favorite gem of the show, I think that the gems always knew she was trapped in the mirror, but they thought that she was either a corrupted gem like the ones bubbled, or would inmediately turn hostile the moment she was let out, which to be fair, she did, and just kept Steven in the dark like they always do.

So many questions, that shall be answered only in time! Seeing Alec react to Lapis and her appearance and role in this episode for the first time was awesome, and I for one was just bursting at the seams like Lucas because spoilers!! Lapis is an interesting character, and I think this episode does set up later plot points and what plays out in the show fairly well, but doesn't give too much away. It explores just enough to leave first time viewers wondering what might happen next given everything that's been shown so far.

this was the high point of steven universe to me. Not that later seasons are bad exactly - though they did suffer from some executive meddling. But just that this is when the mysteries were at their deepest and the potential size of the universe felt biggest. Eventually the show needs to start answering the questions it asks. It's particularly rare that an answer can be as compelling as the mystery that it closes, and the more we learn about a setting the smaller that setting will feel.

The turning point, plot bomb, and lore dropped!

We saw how effed up Amethyst was by her gemstone being cracked, and its damage was far lighter than on Lapis's. It may be that some gemstones can take punishment better than others, and when the mirror was first discovered by the Crystal Gems, they may have looked at the heavily cracked gemstone and concluded that the Gem inside was near-comatose or actually dead and that the gemstone was essentially just a collection of gemshards (like those in Frybo and Secret Team) stuck together within the mirror. That was a huge revelation for Steven--and the audience--that all the monsters they've been fighting and the gemstones kept bubbled inside the Crystal Temple were once Gem beings just like Garnet, Amethyst, Pearl and Rose Quartz. You might recall in Monster Buddies when Steven accidentally unbubbled Centipeetle, she briefly formed a normal humanoid shape. Although it was the mid-season one finale, Mirror Gem/Ocean Gem were intended to serve as the SU series finale in case Cartoon Network abruptly cancelled SU in the middle of season one.

*excited bouncing * And now the real lore begins. I have been SO excited for you to finally get through the first half of this season to reach this point. Like, yes, the first half is good! It's a good show even without all of the larger worldbuilding, but now it will become clear why folks say "you have to get through the first bit". It's not that it's bad, just that there's so much MORE. Also, the foreshadowing they have built into EVERYTHING. Lucas gets to see this now, which is fun. This story was well planned from the jump, but it only becomes clear HOW well planned when you watch it again. It has some of the best continuity anywhere, even in these "early" parts. You can go back after watching later seasons and see non-verbal reactions from the gems to things Steven says/does, stuff that only makes sense MUCH later. You don't notice these little moments at the time, and you aren't MEANT to, they just happen because... they would react that way. It's SO good, and so consistent. I want to gnaw on it. Love these reactions, can't wait for more!

What I find really weird about the premise of these episodes is... why would Pearl just give Steven a mirror that could teach him anything about the history of Gems? The three know much much more and are clearly keeping secrets from him, Pearl above all is super duper overprotective. It just feels out of character.

honestly i count season one as 2 seasons all other ones have around 26 episodes. while this episodes are heavy on the overarching lore part of the show i think that is better remember that "indirect kiss" and "house guest" are better representatives of the the actual essence of the show

I’m loving all the other comments saying lapis is their favorite gem since she’s mine and the community tends to dunk on her from things in future episodes. Y'all talking about rocks well I know rocks. Lapis lazuli also known as Lazurite is a blue silicate mineral in the sodalite group. It contains a blend of sodium, calcium, silica, and aluminum, plus sulfur atoms. In the real world lapis is not a water gem it's a metamorphic rock, the only two gems you can find in the ocean are pearls and coral. These two are not considered as minerals, they're both organic gemstones meaning they're produced by a living organism.

BIG SPOILERS AHEAD I wouldn't say they nerfed her that bad I mean they didn't reuse the water clones she used to fight the crystal gems this episode, but she was able to just trap Jasper while forming Malachite for A WHILE, then she basically didn't use her power for fighting, just to scape earth and stuff, but I mean he was a bit traumatized with the whole "I was trapped in the ocean for months, in darkness and constantly fighting". But then she managed to like go up against Blue (her mental health was so bad not even Blue could hurt lapis and that's so funny to me for some reason) and they never said she was weak She even had that one episode in SUF where we see that even if other Lapis Lazulis are quite powerful, she's like, sheesh

@@Fawn_underscore Also spoilers yes, Lpis was still very powerfull, but based on what we saw on this episode she could have made gigant water soldiers to fight the diamonds, or grab the entire ocean and crush them under it's weight. Lapis could also have easly beaten Jasper by making multiple copys of them, or surounding them in water and trowin them into space.
