So when they arise again or in a similar fashion, you know healthy ways to process whatever your feeling without harming yourself or others. Late reply, but usually those who act as a pillar of strength, always being happy, cheerful, and helping others are usually those who need help too. People who put all the weight and pain on their shoulders, and are prone to fall hard when all the pressure finally breaks through the facade. Because they are usually the ones to help they don't know how to get help themselves because they think they are fine. Steven's whole concept of the future with everything going on around him must have appeared claustrophobic or even downright stagnant. Fear of the unknown. Sometimes it can be many things, emotions are hard, and obviously Steven felt trapped. Beach City everyone has these expectations of him and puts him on a pedestal. Homeworld its similar, if not worse for the coddling. It helps to make sense of why he gets so upset at Spinel for using his own advice on him. Because he doesn't know how to handle everything he is feeling with his advice and knowledge which leaves him scared. Probably why he leaves at the end. To go out and experience life where there isn't such a sense of stagnation, where everyone doesn't see him as some golden boy and feeds into his worst fears if he doesn't get it right and disappoints them... Its Complicated.

For anyone who thinks that this came on out of nowhere, look back at the episode when Garnet sings “here comes a thought”, Steven was already emotionally struggling and hiding it from the people who love him. He was already breaking down. He’s always been very good at helping other people deal with their problems, but when he is forced to face his own… he snaps. I’ve always related to Steven, Future just solidified that.
@veronicapiccinini79566 ай бұрын
I believed such feelings started way back in Season 1, in episodes such as “An Indirect Kiss”, “Rose’s Scabbard”, “The Test”. But then in Season 2 we have “Full Disclosure” and “Joy Ride”, especially in the latter he admits that he is afraid the CGs would hate him for being the reason his mother died (seriously that episode was underrated)
@gemmapearce7070 Жыл бұрын
I’m watching garnet’s expression during Steven’s rant and I’m just imagining that on top of the horror /concern she and everyone else is feeling watching Steven like this, she also sees the imminent future. She’s seeing the kid she raised become corrupted moments before it’s actually happening and she knows she’s helpless.

Ugh I don't blame Steven. "You can tell us anything!" "Wait WHAT happened?? Why?!? Why didn't you tell?!! You're joking right???" It's hard to tell things when your issues are made to feel like you're doing something wrong and it's distressing everyone by telling.
@Zlarel Жыл бұрын
At the same time though it's a result of him not disclosing *any* of his many issues. They're reasonably worried for him, but they don't know the whole picture; and because he doesn't want them to worry (and is ashamed) he avoids filling them in, while unbeknownst to them his problems and stress are building up to catastrophic, explosive levels. Then things come to a head, the secrets start spilling out _en masse_ , and all of a sudden what they assumed was a difficult problem has the curtains torn off and is revealed to be a *life-threatening emergency* . So of course this excacerbates their reaction, which excacerbates his response... and the end result is an explosive chain-reaction wherein the volatile party experiences a complete meltdown. It really is a realistic scene, sci-fi Gem shenanigans and all.

I feel like the original Steven Universe was all building up to this moment. The ultimate foreshadowing to this horrific scene of psychological horror. The Future was the continuation counting down to it. This scene is absolutely terrifying because it felt like it was pre-destined to happen. All the Crystal Gem and human traumatic experiences Steven experienced had built up since the day he was born. Having no true mother figure in your life can be so detrimental. His father was running away from his own responsibilities. The Crystal Gems were too caught up in grief to truly help Steven. A lot of the human cast either pushed him aside or couldn’t truly help him because of his own circumstances and when he did try to help them, they either nearly died or had left. Steven had to help the Crystal Gems or other humans with their problems but could never help himself because he probably didn’t actually have a solution to his problems. Only his true companions could help him. All the trauma and suffering was too much for one person. It would cause him to break and have a horrific breakdown. I think the saddest part is probably the feeling Steven felt like he let Connie down by humiliating himself by proposing to her too soon and despite the situation obviously showing Connie loves him, Steven feels unworthy of her. Too broken to even consider the possibility. It’s what makes the following episode so powerful. I was brought to tears by it. Steven may have been his own final encounter like all the others he endured but just like them, he was given the needed loving words he needed to hear. He was no monster, he was Steven Demayo Diamond Universe and he was LOVED. He may have made serious mistakes but he was capable of learning from his mistakes ultimately being able to desperately get the help he needed via therapy. Steven being able to move on and still have the people who care about him in his life help him when he needs is so touching and moving. A perfect ending.

Everything about this scene is like whoa. The fact that Greg and Connie also gasped in horror when Steven said he shattered Jasper that they know enough about gems to know that's the equivalent of murder. And the look on all their faces when he just breaks down and they realize that Steven is having a mental breakdown in the realization that they were all contributors to it. Cuz basically his whole life the gems told him that he had this big great destiny and big shoes to fill and at first likened him to another Rose going so far as to imply that he is literally his own mother and not have a real identity of his own. And even after realizing that his mom literally doesn't exist anymore he's his own person he's still grapples with that cuz the gems and most of the species had very high expectations of him and bringing peace to the universe and those are other big shoes to fill and that can make him think he has to be perfect and great and a problem solver all the time and I can make someone crack and hide their emotions because his whole life he had been told that he had very high expectations to fill and he had to be destined to be this big great thing that was inadvertently instilled into his head by the gems because they didn't understand why Rose had Steven to begin with she just wanted him to be a human being and grow and decide what he wanted to be because she couldn't do that herself and she wanted to create something that could, and the gems kind of ruined what she actually wanted for Steven because they couldn't understand it themselves that's how he became corrupted.
@KD-ou2np Жыл бұрын
Its not entirely their fault. A lot of what you said is true but they and greg still raised him to be a really great thoughtful, free-spirited, person. Everyone goes through a form of questioning of everything and rejecting where they came from as they find themselves, espeically in your teens and early 20s. All the things you brought up obviously exacerbated things for him but its not possible to just prevent people from having mental health struggles entirely. We can't just say it's someone eleses "fault" thess things just happen as a result of being people in the world.

Any reflection you see of yourself is distorted or shattered. And sometimes you can't even look at yourself...... The scene didn't make me feel seen but... exposed.... it was literally my deepest and greatest fears put directly Infront of me where I couldn't find from it.... ..It really wasn't until recently that I started to love myself... But even now.... Sometimes I still just... Think I might've only learned how to love the monster I have to keep stopping myself from seeing myself as.... It's constant work... Stevens whole backstory with Rose Quartz and Pink Diamond is such good writing for a character like Steven to effectively demonstrate harsh themes like anxiety, trauma and identity crisis to an audience. and ironically even though "shattering" gems is supposed to be a more "child friendly" substitute for death, it's actually worse because at least humans have hope for the possibility of an afterlife, but gems are like A.I. Computers so if their gem breaks they're effectively deleted forever. So if Steven couldn't bring Jasper back then he'd have an even worse guilty conscience than having killed someone, because he'd have the confirmed knowledge that he had deleted someones consciousness forever. Remends me of when i decided to rewatch the classic Digimon Tamers thinking "haha fun childhood nostalgia" but instead had an existential crisis when scientists were deleting Digimon in their labs as they cried out for help, and when Guilmon's data becomes glitchy and he sadly tells Takato how he doesn't want to dissapear forever.
@NamlessOctarian10 ай бұрын
As seen with the forced fusion experiments, shattered gems don't just get "deleted" forever. It's actually even worse because the shards will reform whatever body parts the can reform and mindlessly wander, looking for the missing pieces of themselves.

I understand this mentality. I didn’t allow myself to accept I had problems, and I wouldn’t tell people about them bc “i don’t have any problems so there’s no need to tell them anything” I felt so alone. I began writing like a madman on my school desks (in dry erase) all my conflicting thoughts bc I had no other way of venting. The one time I tried to open up to a friend I had an anxiety attack. I remember mid scribble rant I convinced myself everything’s fine, why am I upset, nothing’s wrong, this is fine. I felt like I was going insane. I took photos of the scribbles bc I felt if I just wiped them off I’d lose my mind even more. Eventually I went to my parents and got medication, and I’m better now.
